View Full Version : TAKING YOUR SPEED 3 TO THE TRACK.

Just wondering how many members and Speed 3 owners take their cars to the track, how many tracks are available to the general public and what is the criteria for tracking your car. Also is your car stock or modified, how much does it typically cost, and what is your favourite track.
I think it would be a blast to go for a day or 1/2 day.
Let me know about your experiences.:)

If your looking to start: Try the Ian Law Track school...
They help you with instructors and class time to help you understand how to track properly, and you also get a good few hours of tracktime as well both with and without a instructor. A few of us went this year and it was a blast.

I'll be honest- something I've thought about doing a lot... but never had the "Cojones" to get out there and do it.
Albeit, going with a group would ease a lot of those tensions.

Sounds like fun, is this something TM3 does every year? Also on that thread what's with the taped up licence plate and fog lights on the silver 3?

I agree looks like fun, wonder how hard it would be to get a group together for next year.

Yeah, I don't know what's up with that guy and the taped plates. Maybe he doesnt want his plate numbers posted on the internet...
Check out carcontrolschool.com. The 2011 schedule isn't posted yet, but it will be at some point in the next few months. As others have suggested, Track school is a good experience, and if you intend to lap with Ian Law you are required to attend his school, or have completed similar training.
It is fairly challenging to get a group together, but not impossible. The best thing to do is pick a date from the 2011 schedule that you want to attend, then post up and let people know when you're going. If no one goes with you I say keep the date and go on your own. You'll meet good people, and who knows, maybe that guy with the taped up plates will be there...
Also, read the threads in the Track /Handling subforum. There is good info posted there.

Hmm, now that I think about it might not be such a good idea to have your plates plastered all over the internet, good point.

People tape their plates for insurance purposes. I know people who have even their vins on their windshield covered lol

It's fun, but it's not cheap. Track fees are usually about $100 plus gas. More if you want to do the school.
But I did it with the guys here, and I had a blast. I'll be back for more next season.
The one part that really surprised me (track n00b) was how much I could push the car - and learn how it responds. I feel that I learned a ton about my car, the fact that I can push it harder than I would normally, and realize that it wouldn't veer out of control. (Car CONTROL school... I get it now). No on-ramp is safe from me now!!
I guess it's sort of the same idea of taking your new car out in the snow for the first time and learn its limits, etc... but... faster :D

There's nothing wrong with taking the regular 3 to the track...you'll be surprised at what it can do, just ask Donutz.

Nothing wrong with becoming a better driver, after all it's what we learn after we know it all that really counts.

I would definitely be interested if you got a group together for a track day. I would love to learn better control and how far I can actually take my car safely. I learned some techniques when doing vehicular motion capture, but nothing that could be used on city streets, or anywhere outside of a mocap set lol.
But learning control techniques for a civilian car is something I think everyone can benefit from. So count me in for sure!

Count me in or next year too. :thumbsup
I've done over 20 trackdays on bikes, but have never driven a car on a track. I'm planning on heading out with a buddy of mine next spring.
I'm leasing a speed 3, and I was worried about trashing it this summer, so I didn't bother doing any trackdays. But it's been ~3 years since I sold my bike and I'm itching to get back out!
What track did you guys run? I've been on all shannonville layouts, mosport rdt and long, calabogie, and cayuga. The pics don't look familiar to me at all.

My suggestion for a really good track school is the SoloSprint track school that runs every year in May. IMO, it's the best bang for the money, at $425, you get 2 days of track school, plus a free entry to a SoloSprint (Time Trial) event for use at any future event in the season.
I took this school twice at the beginning of my track career, and have since taught at this school on a few occasions (I'm now Race Licensed in Ontario). I've taken other HPDE schools and Race Schools, and for the price and what you'll learn, the Solo Sprint school is the way to go whether you're new to the track, or you're just looking for training that will make you go faster.

Cheap alternative would be the little brother of the Solosprint school: Autox school!!
