View Full Version : Concerning rust...

I booked an appt today at Whitby Mazda to see someone regarding my rust situation. I showed the person who was looking at my car the rust which is located on the passenger side rear door window frame (the small piece that separates the two pieces of glass) which has bubbling and noticeable rust. I also showed him the rust developing on the trunk lid when I open it up.
He told me my car was outside of the 3 year rust protection or something of that sort. I told him I thought it was 5 years and he responded with "that's for perforation, not rust." I am not sure if he is playing me for a fool or not, but if you know the ACTUAL years, what parts of the car they cover, that would be great.
The person I spoke with told me if I wanted to proceed to get it fixed it would cost me upwards of $600 just for the door to be fixed and basically told me to do the trunk lid myself.
I don't want to leave the rust much longer but if I can't get it done through Mazda, theres nothing I can do about it at the moment.
I will post pictures ASAP of my rust.
PS - I did check the search function!

I would suggest the advisor is playing you for a fool. I would suggest a)calling Mazda Canada and b)going to another dealership or escalating to the Service Manager at the same dealership.

I figured this. What is the warranty time? Is it 3 or 5 years? I have a 2006 Mazda 3 so I thought it would have been covered.
Can anyone suggest a Mazda dealer that they went to for the rust repairing?
Should I take pictures of the rust myself and contact Mazda Canada through e-mail?

I contacted Mazda Canada and they told me there is a 3 year warranty with "surface rust" and 6 year with "perforation". I am not sure but I'm pretty sure the rust is more than just surface rust on my window frame. I will take a pic in a few hours to show.
If there are any other users with the window frame bubbling/rusting that have actually got a fix from Mazda out of it, I would love to hear from you!

I had that same issue, as have others. When you peel off the black tape, you could actually see small holes in the door frame.

Should I remove the black stripping and see if it has perforated it? I just don't want to remove it and have an ugly rust spot visible and not have any perforation lol.
How do I go upon removing the black stripping?

well if that's the piece..it's replaceable and you can DIY lol but you probably don't want to since it's under warranty. Free is good :chuckle

Exactly ;) haha. I'll make a big stink about it and see how it goes.
As for the trunk lid.. there is surface rust.. but hardly any to no perforation. Should I just sand it down and treat it?

the dealer took pictures of the spots that were affected and sent them to madza canada. They wanted to see how serious it was so they actually came to the dealership and they said ok we'll fix it.

I went to QEW Mazda in Oakville. Speak to them. I had major run around with Ontario Mazda including them telling me that Mazda Canada only covered $500 of the claim. I had wrote about it in my blog, check it here (http://mazda3carpet.com/category/news/corrosion-warranty/)

I highly doubt it will make a difference. Having rust happen because rock broke your paint and then it rusted the exposed metal is different than an area that hasn't been damaged by something like that, that still has full paint or "coating" on it that is rusting because of design or materials issue is a different story

FYI, I had both my rear fenders' rust repaired and got the car back on Oct 29 2010. It largely depends on the dealership that is helping you. I only required one visit to the dealership, they took pics, sent it in to Mazda and once they received the ok signal, I was able to make an appointment with their bodyshop. It was relatively hassle free, even though I had to wait 1-2 months over the pending process and I had to give them a reminder phone call.

If your rust is a product of a chip or damage they won't cover it. If it just starts occurring beneath the paint for no good reason they will cover it but you have to be willing to push for it.

Sounds like you and I have good dealers. Again I took mine in for an oil change, asked them about the rust, they told me to come back when the body shop guys are there. Went back they took pics, sent them off to Mazda. Got a call saying it was approved and to bring the car in. Brought in the car, after a week they told me they have to order new panels. Two weeks in total it's all done.

All these dealerships you listed are east of the 404, if you don't want to go east of the 404 than you have to try MOT, Avante, Prima, Maple Mazda, Yorkdale Dufferin are all west of the 404.
BTW I haven't read the whole thread but that part you have in your picture is only covered under the 3 year 80,000km warranty and if you are outside that warranty will not cover it. If you want we can change that for you, we will be cheaper than a dealer. You have to take apart quite a bit of the door to replace that.

I made the direction correction in the post after the post with the picture attached! I meant West, not East! :)
I was not sure if it was past the 3 years... or where it fell. I dont see how some people can manage to get it done for free by the dealer but others cannot.
Is this considered perforation (covered under the 60months) and not surface (covered under the 36months)?
The only way I would be changing it would be if it was covered by Mazda.. I am a student and currently do not have the cash or time to do it myself.

The perforation warranty is on the body and body only, since that is a removable part ie. a couple of screws has no structural impact mazda only considers it a 3yr 80k warranty item, however to your first question. Dealers can cover that under "goodwill" warranty at the dealers discretion as they are taking responsablity for the claim and may or may not be re-imbursed from Mazda Canada. If you are just over your time but not your kms you can try to see if they will cover it, but if you are way over your time and kms don't hold your breath.

Simple enough!
How much does the part cost and how much time for labour if I were to do it myself?

I think the part is around $25 and most dealers will charge 1.0 hour of labour to change it, most dealers are in the $105 - 120 range of per hour labour.
We will change it for $50 labour + the price of the part and it takes about 45-1hour to do.
I had rust bubbles on 3 out of 4 doors on my car... took it to MOT before the end of my 5 year warranty (I had extended warranty) and it was fixed....
guess what... the rust came back on all 3 doors in less than 2 years!!! That's a shitty work done by MOT.... rust should not come back this fast on all 3 doors!!!!!
worst part is that Mazda never communicated to me that the rust warranty was extended for a year for 2004 cars, so I didn't claim it until it was too late.....
I tried to talk to MOT about warranty on the work that they do, trying to tell them that rust should not come back in less than 2 years in the same spots, but they didn't care. I told them that body shops usually give you "life time warranty" on body work as long as you own your car... but MOT didn't care....
but realistically, that's a shitty workmanship by MOT..... my brother and I fixed my brother's old car once (good old VW Scirocco), and it took more than 2 years for the rust to come back in the same spot.... and I really suck at bodywork, so that should tell you something....

Yeah you better off fixing it your self and then just get it painted somewhere for cheap. paint job is not as important as the work under the paint.
you have to make sure all cracks and cavities where water can get through are sealed and etched with acid before priming. I did that to my inner fender lips (also used fiber glass sheets over where two metals are joint inside the lip, then undercoated the entire inside, thats where water gets in between metals and before you know it there is rust goin inside of your fenders, i had rust going inside my fender about 2-3 inches inside. tried cutting it out but decided to just grind + etch it, seal it), and its been few months and no rust so far, comparing to my buddy who did the same thing but didnt etch it with acid and didnt use right acid etching primer- his rust started poping out month after lool.
Also if you dont want it to come back on your fenders just check it inside your fender where back bumper connects every now and then, there is a little flap that bends inside and it has a hole for the screw, thats where it usually starts, if you notice it rusting again you can just fix that your self before it expands over the bend onto you outer fender parts.
I guess you never know how ppl will fix your car up, they can do a good job or they can go the quick way to save $$$ and you'll see the results after few months.
I know it takes looong time to do it good, i spent good few weekends doing it but at least i know what i have there now and it seems pretty solid so far.
I still think it's unacceptable for the rust to come back at the same spots in less than 2 years...I don't want to bash MOT, but warranty work was technically done by them ( I know they don't have body shop, but they are partners with some shop).... I'm just wondering how much money did Mazda of Canada payed MOT for such a shitty job?
I do agree that mazda 3 does rust like a rust bucket, but if something is getting fixed, it should be fixed properly........ especially if work is done by dealership....

My first car was a '97 EL. I see a lot from those model years (front grill in the give away) with no rust to this date. Im sure they must be rust protected just to be fair. Even still, MZ3's rust protected are rusting well before their time. I have to wonder how good a value a Mazda 3 really is with all the cost cutting you cannot see underneath. Everytime I wash mine, I feel scared wondering when, not if my turn will come. Mine is dealer rust protected.
Love the car, I hope the '09's fair better then the years before like they said they fixed the panels.....

I just got my car back on Friday and it was a pretty bad and rough job. The rear fenders where the rust was, you can clearly see that something was done there. The paint, isn't smooth or the body work below. They also scratched my rear trunk lid with my Sirius Antenna and I have no idea why it was moved as there was nothing on the top of the trunk lid that was painted.
I just fired off an email to both the body shop and the dealership about the issues.

i just got a call, got APPROVED for extended warranty on my 05 mz3 :) :)
They willchange the whole panel where i fixed it (btw even with my fix, i noticed it started cracking below the fiber glass and rust started showing again...). So yeah over 1500 in repairs for free well just need to pay for rental car.
So they will change my rear fender panels, small panels in between side windows, and fix my trunk lid (bubbles everywhere). im so gladdd
