Replaced the first one at 75 000km and the 2nd one started around 160 000km I've been dealing with it for the last 20 000km anyone else dealing with this annoying Mazda "defect"? Have any quick fixes been found yet instead of replacing the manifold again!:bang

Just out of curiosity, how much did you spend on parts and labour for this ? I'm almost positive my car also has this problem. It's been ticking forever.

First time was warranty, pretty sure the manifold is 1100$ and to install most likely a few hours so around 1500 I would guess. It doesn't do any harm to the engine it's just annoying lol

Sweet jesus... that's way over my budget.

Good to know though that it isn't harmful to the engine. That was my major concern. Thanks for the info.

It is so annoying, I agree. I just leave the windows up so I don't hear it lol

you can try replacing one of the solenoid valves on top of the intake manifold, there are 2 of them they look identical but one is for the intake. At the beginning when this problem first started you had to order the whole intake to get the solenoid valve, but after Mazda saw a bunch of intakes going through under warranty they started selling the solenoid valves seperate. I think the valves are like $70 or so, it's been a while so I might be wrong on the price.

For anyone in the future trying to diagnose it here's a vid

Well that's a lot better than $1500.

Does this mean you're able to provide this type of service on our cars ? Because if you're able to, I'd have to set something up in the next few weeks. My car sounds like it has a diesel engine in it.

Yes we can do it, the part has to come from the dealer we can get that for you to.

Is the solenoid replacement a guaranteed fix to the manifold tapping issue?

pretty sure there is a recall in the states on the purge valve for 04 mazda 3's

the purge valve causes a rough idle and stalling issue and an engine light, not the ticking noise in the intake.

So is there another part we can replace on the intake manifold that would stop the ticking noise in the intake? without replacing the entire intake manifold!

I guess you didn't read the whole post, I had talked about the solenoid valve not a purge valve.

I guess we are talking about 2 different part's! Do you have a picture or description of the solenoid you are talking about?

I am sure you can see it directly on top of the intake manifold in the front of the engine, there is 2 of them together side by side on the same bracket with an electrical connector and vacuum hoses on them.

Ah ok, which one would be the one causing the noise? the left or right? and is it a guaranteed fix?

I can't remember which one it is, and as I told mzkaye it is not guaranteed to fix it but it is where you have to start to diagnose it and determine if the intake manifold has a problem or not. The solenoid valve controls the intake flaps by vacuum and the signal it receives from the PCM to open and close the flaps which is where the ticking noise is coming from.

If you click my video you'll see that if you disconnect that one connector the noise goes away, so wouldn't that confirm that it's in fact the flap's? so if the solenoid doesn't fix it then pretty much the manifold has to be I'm assuming then correct?

i have a 05 2.0l and i've seen this video before, so i went out to try it on my car and for some reason .. i don't have those plugs on the top of my intake manifold. Is that fix only for the 2.3l or something ?

yup, another thing that sounds like that is a faint rod knock lol have you ever ran the car low on oil?

same issue....just had it diagnosed at mazda to replace the intake manifold assembly...part was 370...2 hours labour around 580...looking for part online no luck yet though.

Why don't you hit up user brighteyes here on the forum. He has a brand new manifold on Kijiji for sale for $250, here is the link to the kijiji ad.

Mazda sells the shutter valves seperately now so no need for the intake manifolds.

Earlier this year, Jimmy told me that I have this issue and to fix it, I would need a new intake manifold if I wanted to rid the ticking sound.

He also said that as long as the ECU doesn't throw a CEL, there is no harm in not actioning as long as the ticking sound doesn't bother me.

I'd like to hear some feedback from TheMAN, stock3 and Harbour Rat on my options.

What code would it throw? Out of curiosity
