Hey everyone,

I am looking at getting a straight pipe installed. I currently have a PRM SRI and a mazdaspeed 3 catback exhaust. I love the sound but i was looking for something a bit more ruff/more rumble lol.

I have been looking into this so called straight pipe.....my question is what does this do or what does it replace, how much am i looking at ($) and will it change the sound of my setup?

its all pipe from the header back.. put on a header.. that will give you more sound

Also regarding your question on straight pipe, nothing much is involved... I think they just replace your cat with a straight pipe, meaning you will be running with 1 cat (assuming stock header). Any muffler shop should be able to do it around 100 dollars give or take...

Sraight pipe just eliminates the 2nd cat. So you essentially replace your 2nd cat with the straight pipe. I sent you a pm

headers its all up to how much work you wanna do with you install it.. plus how much you want to work on it after.. :)

well i have a stock header, and a MS3 catback. So as long as i dont delete both cats and as long as i can pass emissions, ill probably pick one up. Will there be a noticeable difference?

Kappa
11-23-2010, 12:24 PM
yes there should be a difference in the butt dyno! and yeah if you want to pass emissions then header would be way better than str8 pipe but i dont have emissions tests so i dont really know

ST3ALTH
11-23-2010, 12:47 PM
Well im going to pick up a straight pipe tonight and give it a go, see what it sounds like lol. If i dont like it i can always go back to stock. Thanks to SoyaBean!

Yes you can pass e-test with just the cat in the header. In fact I got cleaner results with my CBE (2nd cat delete) when compared to stock.

Hey Thanu,

Im picking mine up from Soyabean tonight, dont know where else you could get one though.

If you have an Access Port or some other method to tune the car then you can easily pass emissions with no cats...it's just a matter of doing an 'e-test tune' so that you get desired emissions.

I had a straight pipe on my mazda 3 before. Noticible gain for sure. Much more power on the highway and when the AC is on i can feel the car less sluggish.

Soooo i got my straight pipe installed today. I ended up deleting the second Cat and putting in a straight pipe. Sounds awesome and the car has more pep! The one i bought off of Soyabean is 2 inch piping and i had 2.5 from the mazdaspeed 3 exhaust so i did not work for me. So if anyone wants it just shoot me a PM and i will let it go for a crazy cheap deal!!!!! lol

ill try and get a vid up on youtube so you guys can hear it.

Seriously? When I bought it the guy told me that it'll fit on my Borla because he had a mazdaspeed accessory cbe. Both Borla and Mazdaspeed are 2.5 inch and his came off the mazdaspeed accessory.... Hmmm, sorry about that :S

I had straight pipe before. Sounds badass, but u loose back pressure. Bought a catback after a year b/c I missed the back pressure

Thanks to Jason, I have a much better understanding of these mods :)

So... like.. option 1:
SRI
Straight Pipe
CBE

Option 2:
SRI
Header
CBE

I'm actually kinda leaning towards option 1, if the difference in gain isn't that much.

i love my straight pipe...paired with borla CBE, stock header. I wasn't willing/prepared to spend the money on a header. And i didn't want it very loud. This added more attitude to the sound and a little bit louder. The pickup was much better immediately. Never dynoed the diff though.

You forgot option 3, the real baller option:
SRI
Header
Str8 pipe
Cbe

Any exhaust shop can do it
All it is, is a pipe to eliminate resonators, flex pipes, and unnecessary bends.

In Scarb - Majestic and NoyzBoyz do custom exhaust work.

I had that last week shu, but it was like i was driving an f1 car lolz!!! mps(vlad) got to drive it lolz! imo, get option 2 and swap out the cat for straight pipe for race days if you wanna sound crazy loud. that way you get better reliability and better natural gains.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation, or misused terms in this thread.

The classic definition of a "straight pipe" is an exhaust that has no cats, resonators or mufflers from the manifold/header back. Just a single piece of pipe (sometimes one continuous tube) all the way out the back of the car.

Now, what many in this thread are referring to as a "straight pipe" is a cat delete pipe, i.e. a straight section of tube that connects the manifold/header to the exhaust system after where the cat(s) would normally sit.

A classic straight pipe on an N/A car will get you a ticket and lose horsepower unless correctly sized, whereas a cat delete pipe will make the car slightly louder, worse for the environment, probably throw a CEL and if you're lucky gain a few HP. It is a cheap way to get noticed, though.

I hope this clears things up, or at least educate somebody.

Just an FYI for others who think you this mod is pointless or will throw a cel (even though there is no 02 sensor for the 2nd cat)
