Up north on the old 3 yes the dash lights would dim while trying to turn it over. Down here, hasn't happened yet (hasn't been cold enough). To give yourself a better chance to start, turn everything off when you park the car (heater, radio, headlights, seats, etc). Also turn the car on, without starting it, for a few seconds before cranking to give everything a chance to start up off load.

If I were driving a built(forged) engine in the winter I would get a block heater as precaution.

Cold starts are tough on an engines as and with clearances changing with a built(forged) engine why would you risk something by making the oil viscous in the sub freezing temperatures.

No one normally needs a block heater with the mild winters we normally have but climate changes. You're ignorant to think it wouldn't help your engine and if you have the ability to install it yourself it's worth the investment. I park in a garage so I don't need one but if I have a forged engine and was parking outside I would install one.

I've seen far more stripped out bolts than I have broken RSB brackets (which is none). Ultimately there shouldn't be that much load on those brackets, the main force on the bar is a rotational force.

I'm a couple years on mine without rust problems per say, this should be winter #3 they've gone through. You can hit them with fluid film every few months to slow the rust down. Also a good grease will help displace water on the inside (grease between bushing and bracket). Maybe try the energy ones? Also corksport sent me new collars because mine rusted, no questions asked (they weren't broken yet). I wouldn't expect a sway bar bracket to go that quickly, I'd think it should be covered rust or not as it takes more than a winter to rust through something like that.

All I know is that the driver side bracket broke some time in May of last year, replaced under warranty. Now the passenger side bracket has broken, and will be sent back for a warranty replacement. James says he does not use Energy Suspension parts, they are manufactured for him by another company (unspecified), but he also does not discount the possibility of Energy Suspension brackets working in place of the ones he uses.

Mine broke. Got Jamie to replace it. I sprayed it with some rust paint, but haven't jacked it up to check since. I'll take a look when I get an oil change.

I sprayed my replacement bracket (the driver side bracket) with tons of Krown T40, and have been semi-regularly reapplying the stuff. I actually just went out to my car in the company parking lot and sprayed a good 4 second burst of T40 right onto the bracket. Still looks shiny and non-rusted so far.

It's actually $25 + $15 shipping = $40 USD for 2 brackets and bushings. Can we find equivalent Energy Suspension parts right here in Toronto? Or perhaps there are reinforced brackets made out of adamantium (I'll accept solid steel in lieu) that we can buy, install and forget about forever?

Elusivellama

Amazon.ca has a full selection of energy bushings, most around $20. Since the free shipping is $25 or more, just order a couple sets or get something else while you're at it to get over $25. It looks like most sizes are back ordered but should be a cheap enough source. I actually just placed an order on there for a spare set for my car, in the fall when I serviced them last the bushing material was a bit beat up (some tears starting) so will be useful in the spring so I'm in no rush with the back order.

been off the forums for a little while, things have been pretty busy with the new year and all and the 1 year passing of my grandfather. appreciate the backup patrick. i figured out the problem with the car, on the -40ish day i tried starting the car with the remote starter, it wouldnt start cause it was too damn cold and it just kept on injecting fuel. kept on trying for days and finally came to the conclusion that the plugs were ruined from the amount of fuel soaked in it. thankfully i had my old denso's in the box so i cranked the car over to get all that extra fuel out, put the plugs in and boom she started. ATM running perfectly.

Not covered under warranty. Jamie said becuase it broke from rust their is no warranty. Same exact thing happened to me. Same bracket, same side. Also looking for a replacement. Could just order from JBR, but I prefer an alternative.
Paying the $20 plus shipping isn't going to break me, but seems a lot of people having the same failure.
Fobio thoughts ?

My Cobb ones rusted, and the ones from Tri-point rusted. I replaced my Cobb RSB with the TP, so I didn't get a replacement then, but when the TP RSB bracket rusted, I got a set of replacement I think for under $30 at Speedstar. I forgot the brand, but I *THINK* I ordered the 29mm set and it came with new brackets and bushings.

FWIW, I sprayed each and every one of the brackets with spray paint before installing them...so YMMV.

Yeah, I've been eyeing spec stage 2-3 or act 6 puck ... seems those are the popular choices out there. That said, there are bad reviews on both of them out there, hard to sort through the BS to see what the better option is. As it stands this car is my daily driver and I don't want to deal with a b!tch.

SomeGuy

For my intentions with the car I'd rather not, but that seems to me like an expensive choice. The oem dmf is bloody expensive. Fidenza is smf ya?

not sure. I was going to do the full Spec kit with the SMF and Stage 2+ clutch disc. to machine the DMF would be a PITA.

SomeGuy
01-16-2014, 09:50 AM
Looks like it's SMF...it's the cheap option out there.

Ya, machining would be a PITA and cause me to be down a few days and the worst part is you don't know until you're in there whether it can be done or not. With too many hot spots or if it's on it's stops (the dual mass whatnot being worn out) you need to replace it anyway.

I like some of the stuff about the spec kit though, just not the cost if I have to replace the flywheel :(

Power goals?

There's a few guys running Fidenza FWs with an oem replacement clutch (Luk, or Mazda OEM) who seem to love it. The stock clutch supposedly handles quite a bit of power/tq from K04s and S3 beaners. If you're going bigger turbo in future, than ignore my comment, lol.

I'm on k04 fully bolted (see sig), might do a gtx2867 someday but who knows...I seem to be part of the premature slipping group, as I'm low miles (43k) and I doubt the clutch friction material itself is gone.
http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f427/clutch-failure-tracking-thread-162434/

I'm taking one more stab to see what mazda will do, last time they couldn't reproduce it but the roads were shit that day so it was hard to get grip...so we'll see what they say. If I can manage an OEM replacement under warranty (because I doubt the friction material is gone, so not a wear problem, blame a pressure plate or leaky rear main seal or w/e) I'll take it and deal with the problem down the road if it goes again.

As it stands the car is my DD but that might not be the case for long, in which case I wouldn't mind a slightly heavier clutch if it will handle the powarrrrr.

Sorry Tapatalk makes it hard to see sigs. Hopefully Mazda will replace it for you without hassle, if they can replicate.

I've been loosely following that thread myself, seems there's quite a few. I'm fully bolted + meth and tuned, and stock clutch seems to be holding for now without any slip (of course it's a gen 1). Once I toss my planned S3 on there, who knows if it'll be too tired with mileage to handle it, lol.

Shouldn't be problems with a BNR S3, it's pretty well bolt on, just drop it in and tune. I haven't heard of people having issues with them yet. Good for the ~350whp range, 400whp would be tough without meth/e85.

And 4th through 6th gear, 3000rpm, pin it, if it slips (revs go up but speed doesn't) then you've got problems coming. You want to be at 3000rpm though, torque peak is usually 3000-3500rpm and comes on fast.

If i'm spending the cash on meth I might as well spend a few extra dollars and get the bnr. I really like the idea of it just bolting up and tuning. I don't think Alpha deals with Bilstein. You can ask Northern Performance, or Essex Distributors(bilsteincanada.com) .

Mohammad (Alpha Motorsports) does. That's where I got my B8s from. Gonna be running the exact same setup as Ami (Bilstein B8s and Swift Spec Rs) as soon as the weather warms up.

Why Bilsteins are better:

1) because monotube construction, so lots of oil and high strength

2) because German

loki Why'd you have to close the best turbo thread? That would have been hilarious :D

I would say we should invite this kid out to a meet for public shaming but he'd have to ask his parents to come along and they might not approve.

*sigh*

so what is the best turbo?

all depends on preference. what kinds of gains you would want...whether you want drivability and control. I would get a GTX2867..370whp 430wtq. that would be adequate for my liking.

Thats the difference between the current tm3 speed owners and the group that doesnt post any more. The hardcore modded group don't frequent the forum much because of posts like Best Turbo?

People who are actually serious just go out research and do it.

If people are serious about this BT shit. Just go buy the shit and shut the **** up. Everybody wants but has no monies. As for everyone telling me that their going big turbo. Just remember what I told you guys just make sure you got 10k in the bank when you blow.

Why come here for hardcore mods when MSF has way more info and way more people to answer the questions? It makes sense we don't get big technical discussions here. At some point everyone outgrows their baby shoes.

Another thing once you go past 300 whp the wheels spin. It's such as waste of money to mod a front fail drive car.

LoL actually I am in need of new shoes (literally)

But besides that, I stick around because I'm friends with a lot of the locals...and sometimes the newbs need a bit of smacking around lol

Whenever I honestly need to figure stuff out though, I'll post on MSF first.

What's up with all these "best" threads?

I guess cuz posting about it means you're halfway there...other than actually researching, saving up, buying it...cuz you know, these little youngins' are gonna change the world...

I'm gonna register on luxury4play and bornrich and start posting about:

1. Who's the BEST CEO I can hire and fire? You know THE BEST...
2. How to bend Richard Branson over when renting his island getaway?
3. What's the best jet to get frequent mile-high club points in? G4? G5? G6?

Cuz you know I be rocking a Mazda and a six-pack of Rolex's...

You gotsta post it online to make legit, bro...

I mean, nowadays, if you took a shit, and you didn't post up, who'd know it's the BEST shit you have ever taken.

This gives me an idea for a new thread that fits the theme perfectly...

Back on topic...some random shit...

I think it's time I continue the Mod Path series to include some BT stuff. I also think I can spend more time on here now. There's a lot of interest for the OCC kits again, and for Ford brake and transmission fluids as well.
