Not sure if you guys heard of HPFPupgrade
http://hpfpupgrade.com/Products/Show/Mazda/2.3+DISI/Mazda+DISI+Complete+High+Pressure+Fuel+Pump
Read a few negative comments about some guy John who once was in one of the Mazda forums. But after some research it seemed the performance gains were worth it. Hopefully it works out for me and if none of you tested their pump I may be the first.
interesting.......you might be the first for this pump....

Well every pump has a % of improved flow, some more then others. I did not say WHP gains I said performance because some may perform better then others. Ok

mazda3t. I'm assuming you are already running a stage 2 ots Map right now as you said you are waiting on a pro tune. Why you have no pump internals bro? And it prob isn't the bpv leaking. The ots maps have a mean reverse boost taper. Hitting peak around 4-5k then tapering back down by redline. If memory serves I think an ots "stage 2" map targets 19psi then tapers to 16 by redline or something gay like that.
tanspeed3
05-01-2014, 07:12 AM
I would've also strayed away from an unknown pump company... Autotech is the number one and I wouldn't suggest any other. I've installed many internals in the last few years. All but one set were autotechs. The other was kmd. You get what you pay for, simple as that. When it comes down to a car running for a long time without issue, to a set of internals that "could" fail and make the engine run lean and zzb.... I wouldn't take the chance. It's 400 bucks of insurance. I'll put them in for free FFS.
I guess someone has to try something different. This is also an entirely new fuel pump vs. Just replacing the internals. Similar to cp-e
mazda3t
05-01-2014, 08:16 AM
No I'm currently running ots stage 1 93 map. I know not to run stage 2 until I get internals but with this company I'm going with, its a whole new pump. Internals are what 3-500$ shipped. Hpfp upgrade sell a whole unit for 549$ and a core charge of 350$. Cant go wrong there, unless of course the pump doesn't hold up but I have good feeling this pump will be great. Besides I haven't heard of anyone local trying it out so I might be the first.

Fair enough. Nothing wrong with trying something new I suppose. Just keep an eye on your fuel pressure for a while lol. Just be careful. A stage 1 map will still pull more fuel than the stock pump can handle. Just because Cobb says it will be ok, doesn't mean it will. I watched a healthy, unmolested Pu dip into the 1600's right as soon as the map was flashed and ran. That was with only an intake and tip. That test pipe will also yield quicker spool, resulting in more fuel needed at low rpm.

mazda3t stop reading the BS on internet that people use to market their own products. MSF has been testing the crap out of autotechs and CS internals (not as much testing but still goo results) with a very small percentage of failures.
IMHO, just get some autotechs and have someone who has installed them before do it for you.

The cam follower issue on hpfpupgrade.com is in regards to the VW/Audi FSI engines that needed the upgraded hpfp to run 'stage 2'. Their cam followers were essentially a maintenance/wear item. This does not apply to the Mazda DISI motor.
FWIW, the hpfp that John (hpfpupgrade, PTP, etc) sells was in the "first 700 whp Mazdaspeed3"....he's had a bad history on MSF (early pumps seizing, PTP business going bankrupt to avoid paying out warranty on seized pumps, his mother taking over the assets to keep the business within the family, opening up a new business under HPFPUpgrade.com, etc), which is why he's no longer a vendor on there and, subsequently, why the masses have not purchased nor talked about his products on MSF.

Just like some of these guys that blown there motors. Its going to be a long road to victory but if you have the ambition and passion to achieve it then it will all be worth it in the end. His mistakes was long ago and it took all of this you speak of to get to where they all are now. I appreciate you guys looking out but I made this choice and I'll be the one to say I took the chance. Got a used short block in my garage that I got to strip down and take to a machine shop :)
Anyone know a good place to get head? I mean... get a cylinder head :P I am thinking about using the head on my stock block but if I can find a used one that is still in good shape, I might build a full long block instead.

Leave everything bolted up...just give it a good wiggle around (I mean like really heave on it, just be careful obviously if the car is up on jack stands). Also visually inspect it and throw a wrench on each bolt (brackets and endlinks top/bottom) to see that everything is snug. Every time I've fixed someone's RSB noise it's been very obvious where it was coming from once I got under there.

Oh and if you're under there and have greasable fittings, throw a few pumps in while you're at it. Never hurts :)
Also check your struts while you're at it, make sure they're tight (when suspension is unloaded, wiggle side to side) and no fluid is leaking.

I think my k04 is on it's way out. Been tracking some oil residue/weeping that's been located near the turbo housing where the oil return line bolts up. Tightened the bolts which didn't resolve the issue, took it to Mazda a few weeks later and they thought misaligned gasket from the re&re in the fall. Still did not resolve.
Losing about 1/2qu every 2000kms or so. It would seem that there my be a leak from the housing.
UOIs are good except for excessively high copper (on both the new and the old engine), engine holds boost, logs look good and no unusual sounds are present, but this oil has to be coming from somewhere.
I'm looking at BNR s3 and CPE as replacement options... What I'm wondering is if it's a fairly sure thing that if all the lines are tight and I've got a leak that it's a sign of a cracked housing and I should be replacing this preemptively to avoid replacing another engine... Or if there's some other probable cause?

I'll start it off here.
I typically do not tune cars that have low compression. For many and various reason, top of which is liability for guys with higher mileage cars. The last thing I need is some dude with a shitty engine and coming for a MSpeed tune, only to turn around and blame us for his shot engine. Our name, "MSpeed Tuning & Diagnostics" really means that...we provide calibrations and diagnostics services, and this was planned in light of the fact that these cars require "informed ownership" but may pass from 1st to 2nd to 3rd owners and beyond. Conversely, this diagnostic service is also provided to mindful owners who just want to make sure their ride is in good shape.
The MS6 has been contacting me for well over a yr. Firstly for minor things like a MAF calibration and then for load caps and boost cuts....then he got a new engine...supposedly a new long block from a dealer replacement engine. As of last night, the new engine supposedly only had 25K on it...this is a 2006 MS6. When it came in yesterday, the engine looked like a well used engine with 100K of dirt and oxidation around it...surely didn't look like a new long block, etc.
Going thru the tests, this also gave him an opportunity to opt out of tuning since his engine has low comp...weirdly enough tho...160-120-170-160...yes, cyl-2 failure. He also came in on a Stg 0 map. If you wanna have a chuckle, keep an eye out on the baseline and dyno plots I'll post later. After discussing the test results, the owner asked me to proceed.
The value that I delivered to him was that his car can't cope with a OTS map for his mods with its rather aggressive targets. So he'd buck, cut and cap... By recalibrating his MAF/AFR, timing and boost, we were about to get it back to appropriate, albeit lowered than full compression, power levels.
At the end, I'm not very happy I pushed a car with low compression. But given the situation, the MS6 now drives regularly and the owner wouldn't really have known any difference if he we didn't do the test, but now we know what's up and what to look out for for his car. This was the only reason why I helped the guy out. We continue to recommend compression test and boost leak test for each and every car we tune.
I'll have more to share when I post it up.

Thanks Steve, for the kind words. I am but one part...the most vocal part of a larger machine. =)
MajesticBlueNTO has been and continues to be my peer review. A mechanical engineer by training, most of our technical findings are reviewed and vetted by him. In fact, we're deep in discussion over yesterday and we may have more to share in the very near future.
-cj- has been playing with cars just as long if not longer than I have. His insight into matters of the MS3 and beyond is invaluable. Right now, eventho he's playing with N54's, he always shares his experience with the MSpeed crew so we're not just tunnel-visioned with the MS3.
BlueStreak has a wealth of hand-on technical knowledge about the drivetrain, built my engine and even has a sense of humour about it afterwards. Dave is also "Gearhead" status on MSF and have pioneered hardware solutions for our platform.
CelestSpeed3 has injected a sense of get 'er done into our team. He's built my racecar when it was a racecar and with his diverse...yet particular skill set, he's provided insight and solutions to challenges we have all experienced with this platform.
Without these guys, MSpeed would just be a dude with a laptop...and a lot of shit to say, and not much to back it up...well, with over 700 logs pulled, I kinda learned a few things. =)

I have yet to notice a huge difference with the ford transmission oil. I'm just glad I changed it bur 2nd gear does give me a bit of trouble
I found the shifts a bit smoother/easier...but it wasn't a huge huge difference. How long have you had it in? It got better over the first couple weeks.

Manual trans is drain and fill, there's no flush.
It's been in for a few months now

Got an email from Mazda Canada to test drive their full line up of mazda's on July 19 or 20th; I won't be able to make it those days/times so if anyone is interested in going let me know and I'll give you my pin to reserve your spot.

Why would an oil change be necessary? Do you media blast or use B12 or something? Does some seep past the valves?

I can answer right here. The distributor for the chemicals we use, which is a version of what some dealers of higher pedigree cars use, is not available to the public. We had to go thru a trial process where we as MSpeed demonstrated to the distributor that we can replicate their prescribed procedures in a shop environment or at Paul's garage so that they would actually sell the chemicals to us. It's not rocket science, but the vetting process is beyond what a DIY'er would've been able to do to convince the distributor to sell you the chemicals directly.
Like most things we do, we make it simple for our clients because we have already done the leg work to make it simple.

So my car is going into storage as of the end of September.
Anyone know any good winter storage companies that they have used?
I have one quote for $225 a month for climate controlled, secured lot.
or $100 for non-climate controlled FOB access lot.

I know of someone in Bolton who has a barn for 9 - 12 cars. Nothing like what you're talking about here, but a viable alternative.

with all 3 mounts, your car will vibrate like no tomorrow. shifts become solid as the engine never moves but, if you drive with the windows up, get ready for the inside cabin to be a reverberating box.
i have all 3 JBR mounts, 88 rmm and 70 PMM and TMM, but also have a balance shaft delete, and while it sounds nice on short trips, i couldn't do 2+ hours per day anymore.
