I'm on course to beat my best ever 618 kms on a single tank of gas. I have 530 kms on it right now with just over 1/3 left. This is with a one hour traffic jam from Pickering to Oshawa, but I kept cruise dead at 100 the whole way other than that. I'll take a picture when I have to fill. How Not To Lower Your Car
A thread on StanceWorks — the popular forum for lowered and hellaflush cars — began with a proud 2001 Honda Civic owner showing off his trunk-rattling sound system and slammed car. Then forum members quickly discovered how he lowered the car. As you can see, it's the kind of horrific DIY engineering that makes you want to scream, "You're doing it wrong!"
The owner, who goes by the name smokenyall, begins by introducing his "project loud and low" with some videos of its massive sound system shaking the car with some trap rap.
okay well ill introduce myself im from northern cali my 01 civic ex has 278,XXX and climbing, original tranny and motor its all stock exterior wise except my volvo lip.
When smokenyall shows pictures of his new suspension modifications "for teh extra lows," StanceWorks forum members realize that they are dealing with someone who has no idea what he's doing. One person calls the Honda owner a ricer, which clearly hurts the owner's feelings, but it is forum member OpelWagenGT who steps in as the voice of reason.
I think regardless of whether or not you are a "ricer" that is definitely not the correct way to raise your strut towers. Nor is that method safe. Are you even using grade 8 bolts? The force of the suspension should be distributed into the shock tower not centralised on the three small bolt locations.
Smokenyall responds that his bolts are fine and there's even a plate to distribute the force from the suspension. After pointing out that the plate is attached with a rusted bolts, OpelWagenGT steps in with an extremely helpful diagram.
I drew up something is MS paint real quick to attemp to show you why your setup is dangerous, because apparently you don't understand.
At this point I don't think anyone is going to change your mind but we just want you to know that what you're doing is not safe so you can't complain if the system fails.
Smokenyall seems to take this to heart and ends up declaring that he is going to replace the bolts with spacers, as if that will solve the whole problem. This is when the thread starts getting new visitors and people lose their temper. User cobrawannabe begins the mandatory internet hate fest.
Put down the f***ing weed when you come up with car "modifications". This is f***ing offensive. Dude, I'm never harsh or rude on S/W because I feel my car needs a lot of work before I have license to be; but COME ON. This is an absolute joke, and a danger to everyone in your car. You are the epitome of "stupid Honda kid". I really respect a lot of the Honda scene, there are some guys out there really setting the bar.
Smokenyall is still open to advice, asking how he can make his "top hats" safer and responding to the growing number of demands that he never work on cars again:
Thats never going to happen. okay what would you guys suggest to make my top hats "safer". I already have had spacers cut to replace the nuts that were being used as spacers, and im waiting for them to arrive to my house. Should i flip my bolts over and have the heads welded to the bottom plate how obk did or how the hotchkis plates came. btw if you guys didnt notice obk is using one nut per bolt as a spacer on top of the hotchkis spacers.
User 325irollin explains why even when he goes looking for help, he's being a complete idiot.
how about you just buy some ****ing coilovers and get a shop to install them for you the proper way since you obviously suck at being a mechanic.
At this point, all semblance of helpfulness disappears from the threat, smokenyall disappears, new visitors start showing up, and any hope for civil discussion disappears with the first posted image macro. Aside from people just laughing at smokenyall's Civic, one post sums things up pretty clearly:
YOU JUST BECAME INTERNET FAMOUS FOR BEING A RETARD!
As the StanceWorks forum members predicted, the thread is now going viral, and check out this thread at vwvortex to see this Civic owner get more unhelpful, completely deserved ridicule.

And in response...someone got the Comment of the Day with this reply:
http://jalopnik.com/5886107/cotd-no-one-picks-on-my-little-bro-but-me-edition
There are two ways to see this.
A) Guy is a total noob.
B) Guy is a total troll.
If A, he deserves respect and guidance, in the end he's a guy trying to get help and trying to work on his car, well done or not, for all the wrong reasons probably but to each his own, nobody should judge his taste. So, in case he is a novice, he's been trolled hard enough to hide his ass in Russia to never show again, not at least with the same handle/car combo.
If B, there's the huge chance that all newbies out there, trying to get instructions/guidance into how to make some wrenching themselves are going to lose the confidence to go and ask on forums.
Fortunately all the forums that I visit are troll-less. Probably because they are not that famous or popular. But I think, that we, as forum members or community members should all be more like OpelWagenGT, to be helpful and provide a sensible explanation. Remove those stupid cliches and try Forums to meet their objective, to share information and be a source of knowledge. Avoiding troll baits and obvious scams is important and should not be encouraged. And that is why Jalopnik is a great community, because we troll our selves to the point where you know that any stupid reply is a trolling, and keep your life going, and because, when there's a total newbie we don't go barking at him like famished dogs and rather give a hand on any question.
That is why even trolling or being trolled at Jalopnik is cool, and seen with a different lens, because we, as a community are beyond trolling. Cheers for that Jalops, I hope we never lose that essence.
Unfortunately, IRL, the helpful comments usually fall to the wayside and wisdom is usually imparted through humour that ppl notice, rather than a thoughtful technical response. Furthermore, a lot of essence gets lost on the internet either due to varying levels of technical knowledge and understanding...and of course intelligence.
Sometimes a 3-word answer imparts more undertanding and knowledge than a dissertation, but sometimes that gets lost on the internet intelligence filters, and will be interpreted as flaming, since sometimes that wisdom also flies above the heads of the powers that be.
I guess we are all human...after all....lol...
Hold up, does this mean even with grade 8 bolts I might have a problem with my setup??

One thing I noticed and I wanted to share this, is what I realized with the NATOR guys tonight:
It's ok to get the car used...2007 Gen1's at a good price. Nothign wrong with that. That part that distinguishes the smart owners and the ones who are struggling, is that no matter how much the car costs you, it costs the same for everyone to maintain.
For example, whether you have a 2007 or 2012, you'll need a fuel pump. A new one costs the same no matter which Gen it's for. The smart owners know this and understand this to be the cost of ownership...that's why we have a lot of guys with strong 2007's around, and I'd hope that part of the reason is because of some of the knowledge shared on TM3 and MSf.
The owners, who have bought this car on a budget, used, and looked for deal, prolly wonders why they need to spend $700+ on a fuel pump for their $15K car. I suppose for those of us who paid full retail for the car, $700 for insurance isn't a lot by percentage, relative to the price you paid for the car. Obviously that percentage relative to the car will be much higher if you bought the car for much less.
I guess what I'm trying to say, as well as clarifying this a bit for newer owners, in preparation of our March 4 new owner seminar, is that the cost of ownership is the same whether you got the car new or not. The guys who are ok with this...financially and emotionally...will have an easier time and a more enjoyable car. The owners who got a good deal on a used car, have to be prepared to likely outlay a little bit more to get tthe car back into peak shape, and then after that, the costs of properly maintaining and modding the car is the same for everyone.

That's so very true, and I never really thought about it that way.
Unless you're planning on leaving it bone stock and enjoying it the way it is, you really need to put the money into it to get it running properly.

Third gear getting on the highway at Jameson heading east, let the car get up to about 2900 rpm and floored it. Sounded like the worst backfire ever and that Dave may have just sold his other motor. Pulled right off on the shoulder put the hood up. The coupler split off the top hot pipe just behind the intercooler. Thankfully had tools and it was one the couplers that was easy enough to do.
If anyone needs a hand with RSB installs, let me know......it's super easy.

I've had intercooler pipes pop off on the highway before, NOT fun. First time was top of 3rd and the hot pipe off the turbo popped straight off and hit the inside of the hood. I thought I threw a rod. LOL. I was able to keep driving (off boost) since the pipe was still in place, just not sealed. Second time was while logging on the 407. The cold pipe off the IC going towards the TB popped right off... I couldn't reach it without dropping the engine cover. Had to limp it back home. I discovered if you keep the rpms low and accelerate VERY slowly, you can drive with a massive leak. Probably wasn't very wise looking back...
I hear spraying hair spray on the inside of the silicon helps keep it in place.

Thanks for the tip cj, will ask her for some hairspray prior to install!
LOL. Well, the other thing that helps is blue loc-tite. I installed that on all my clamps and it made a HUGE difference. They kept backing out. Even with new clamps.

It was fun, though getting kicked out at 11 kind of sucked. Can't wait for it to get warmer.
Car played tricks on the way home. Did a couple of runs and the boost was good. Closer to home I was back up to 22.5 psi. Thanks for the words of advice Fobio and Celest, I'll jack up the car tomorrow and take a crack at finding the leak..........hopefully it'll be an easy fix.

That's the plan, that's why they call it a screamer pipe.
The whistle sound is when the valve is open halfway, but since my valve is literally 3x the size of the stock one, I doubt it will have to open fully.

Jaime is very good with working with the TM3 guys eventho he's not on here much. I'm sure if Ami contacts him, he'll work out something. I don't really see how shipping heavy items separately makes it cheaper unless you guys are going to go over some sort of parcel limit in one single order.

i've asked Jamie in the past about a GB or discount on multiple items ordered... his response is that his prices are the lowest he can go. However, he does have specials every now and then on new products.
Understanding that he's a small shop (http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f493/some-good-news-some-bad-news-103985/) with some solid products, I've continued to buy from JBR.
JBR ships USPS primarily and I've never had to pay duties on shipments from him... PMM, RMM, shift knob, EGR plates, RSB collars. If bundled together in one big shipment, high chance that thing is going to be taxed by Customs (at least the fee for Canada Post is only $5 if that happens).

he won't register on here as a paying sponsor/vendor just to run a GB...think about those economics for a second...that doesn't mean you guys can't gather names and what not, and give him a firm order with a polite, "can we get a better price, please?"
since I'm now of sponsor status, there will likely be some conflict of interest for me to run a GB, esp one that I don't plan to make $ on, but perception is a bitch sometimes. having said that tho, I will send him a msg and see if it needs to be administered thru MSpeed and our friends.

I lost 65 lbs since August, lols. Not an easy thing to do.
I just worked it out and my bike is 8.6 lb/hp with me on it and a full tank of gas. About 8.1 lb/hp running on empty. It's funny, but I can feel the difference between an empty and full tank even accelerating in a straight line. When I get the full exhaust and juice box for my bike in a year or two it will be around 7.1 lb/hp with a full tank. To have a car match that, especially with fwd, is impressive.

My math tells me that's approximately 475hp at the crank. Should be doable ;)
EDIT: Also, in terms of having "too much" hp for a fwd car, it all comes down to how much torque you put down. For instance, a GT3076 powered civic can make 450whp with only 33X lbs-ft of torque at some astronomical RPM. Is that a big deal traction wise? Not at all. I'm sure most Stage 1 tuned Speeds can easily eclipse that and that car is still driveable :)
So, 450lbs-ft of torque at 6700RPMs is equal to 575hp. 450lbs-ft of torque in 4th gear can easily be driven without too much effort. :)

Without trying to clutter up the GB thread and not wanting to start a full new thread over a topic that's been beaten to death, and searching...
I was thinking about grabbing a RMM through the GB but after reading the descriptions online do I really need the chrome molly mount for hard shifting rather than the 70 or 80 duro billet aluminum mount? I'm still stock and will likely only be going to Stage 1 in the next year so it seems like the chrome molly mount might be a bit overkill especially without any other aftermarket mounts. How much harsher will the chrome molly be in terms of vibrations? It's a daily driver so I want it to perform but still be comfortable.
Thanks guys.

You'll do fine with the softer mounts for daily driving. Molly isn't necessary.

I understand the topic of RMM's has been beaten to death, I did search yet didn't find much in terms of the difference between the JBR mounts that wasn't on their site.

Perfect, that's what I figured. Thanks!

Maybe not, but after I did all the CPE mounts, no more wheel hop. Next comes the anti-lift kit. Hopefully Whiteline releases it soon.

I think you should run anti-lag

Not even kidding I've been toying around with the idea. My new motor will be setup for it. That's why I got everything cermanic coated to handle the heat.
I'm pretty sure you can tune it in with the AP. The better systems use the EGR for anti-lag control to help keep the temps down.

Paul who did the coatings for ya for the ceramic? Did you go with Quy? Or something like JetHot/WhiteLightening?

Quy doesn't do ceramic coating for engine internals

Please go with someone who has done a lot of coatings for internals, for anyone.
There is far too many issues that can arise, if not done properly. Locally, I would use Fireball

I agree...Quy does strictly exterior coatings...for cosmetics and protection from elements.
With regards to Paul/Celeste, I'll let him dish the details, but they were done by his engine builder/machine shop...the way it's supposed to be.

True. Fireball are great people (i think they are still up in Erin). Neal was a great guy there took care of me when I had issues with the MSP manifold.

I have their address at home on my computer but yeah, not exactly local, but worth the drive or they do pick ups once a week still I think at a few places.
I've gotta get my heat gun on my pipes when the weather gets a little better and see if it is needed or not. Had just about everything coated inside but wasn't from Fireball

Swain Tech (http://www.swaintech.com) gets lots of love from the MotoIQ guys.
They are located just outside of Rochester, NY. Not too far if you felt like going for a drive.

Probably the build threads, i mean other than MSF I think this is the next best online resource for this platform.

it's specifically the MS3 Tuning section...there were like 10 guys in the "Hypertech" thread...interesting...

Who would even bother with that?
The name sounds fun but that's about it.
Cobb should call it something more fun other than Accessport, then more people would be looking at that first.
Hypertech sounds cool if you're 12 and you just had a beer for the first time....

Hence most of the new owners.
On a totally unrelated topic, sitting at the bar at the airport in Winnipeg having a beer and some food and these 2 chicks sit down close to me and start hitting Gin and Tonics...this was at 2pm.
Flight was delayed until 4 30pm. They were still at the bar. Get on the plane, they were standing behind me acting retarded. Getting off the plane, both chicks sitting in their seats heads buried in the barf bags.
it's all about the small victories in life...
carry on....

Edit: I feel MajesticBlueNTO has a few closet secrets that we'll have to see what happens. He's on that high level too...mutt
The only secret I got is that the money I spent on the sets of R-compounds last year could have bought me a big turbo kit :)
we should post some polls on here...how many mutts on TM3 .... and, how many mutts from the west indies on TM3 :P
