Phil, isn't there a defrost mode on the air flow mode dial? My 2007 Mazda 3 had it, and its hard to imagine the speed not having it as well. Turns the compressor on to remove moisture from the air, but the ac light does not come on (you can hear the compressor kick in if you have the driver's door open when you hit the switch).

I believe Winnipeg has one of the highest crime rates in Canada. Last thing We want is loki ending up in some farmers basement/ dungeon.

Oil pressure is good to monitor once you build a motor as the chances of losing oil pressure increase then. Stock blocks generally will not spontaneously lose pressure and if they do, it's likely because you left bits of rod scattered on the road about 3 seconds prior.
EGTs are affected as soon as you start tuning the car and are a great way to see the effects of increasing/decreasing boost/timing as there is a direct relationship.

What if you go BT? Would oil press be beneficial by then?
I know EGT is good for tuning, but once the tune is finalized, do you still need to monitor EGT?

If you plan on doing road course racing then EGTs are definitely something to keep an eye on. Then again, so is oil pressure... to an extent. Ha.
Monitoring oil pressure after going BT isn't "necessary". As long as you ensure your oil feed/return lines are properly secured to the new turbo, you should have no leaks and will therefore not lose pressure.
The thing about oil pressure and having to monitor it is that you won't see a gradual decrease in pressure to 0 over time. Its either you have pressure or you don't on a stock block. Oil pressure is maintained with proper bearing clearances, a functioning oil pump and no leaks at the oil filter and turbo. Generally, these things never change over the lifetime of a car/motor (well, you swap filters for oil changes but you get what I mean).
So, you could be driving along with a small oil leak after a new BT install and you look at your oil pressure gauge. All looks well. You keep driving up to the point where the oil pickup tube can no longer scavenge oil from the pan to pump through the motor. Its literally seconds until the motor spins a bearing. Unless you happen to look at the gauge at the exact time the pump can no longer pump oil, the oil pressure gauge is useless.
With built motors, you've disassembled the motor, played with bearing clearances and mucked around with pretty much everything at that point. This is when monitoring oil pressure becomes extremely important. Bearing clearances could be off, the motor not assembled properly etc.
EDIT: This isn't meant to discourage anybody from not running an oil pressure gauge. Its just to paint a picture of what goes on.

If you really want to monitor something oil related, I would recommend oil temperature if you plan on tracking the car.
Blue, can you also please comment about what people will need to run the oil gauges.
Its not about discouraging people, its about people getting what they need and getting it done properly
Please comment in the GB sections (spin off conversion, adaptor plates etc.)

Thanks for the info Dave..
Just another thing to clarify with oil pressure.. If for example, there's an oil leak somewhere, shouldn't the oil pressure decrease because there's less volume? Or is the effect of gravity negated since the oil is constantly moving within the system?
Also, isn't the pressure related to temperature, which means that with an oil pressure gauge you're basically monitoring both?

Oil leaks don't spontaneously show up. If you never touch the motor where oil is pumped through it, you'll never ever leak. Granted, you need to get your oil changed every X KMs so there's always a chance (and it has happened but is extremely rare). If you do happen to lose the motor shortly after an oil change, tow the car to Mazda, give them the keys to your car and have them replace the motor. It was their mistake and they should fix it (assuming Mazda changed your oil).
If you swap in a bigger turbo, part of your due diligence is checking for leaks after the turbo was installed. You look from the top, crawl under, rev the engine, check again. Check again in a few days. If it isn't leaking now, it won't leak later.
Pressure IS related to temperature. I have monitored oil pressure vs. coolant temperature many a time and notice a 5-10PSI drop in oil pressure as coolant temperatures surapass 200*F in stop and go traffic. You can expect the same effect if you're tracking the car. At the end of the day, it is not something to be worried about. The only time things become an issue is if oil pressure dips below 20PSI and at that point, it'll be 0 within a few seconds as there is something seriously wrong with the motor.

looking for a simple answer to these questions.
1: is a test pipe is similar to a downpipe in that I need and ungraded FP in order to safely run it?
2: will it make my stock exhaust slightly louder?
3: I see that SU is highly recommended. Is there any other TP that are recommended, preferably ones that you have experience with.
I have tried to search for this info, on google and the forum but havent got a definitive answer. please post a link if you have a link that answers these (mainly the first) and if you do, dont bother answering them as I will read the link.

2) yes
3) I used to have the SU TP and fitment was very good.

1: Exhaust is downpipe, mid pipe and cat back. DP and MP have cats. Some aftermarket DP are single piece DP/MP. Pump is alway recommended.
2: Yes
3: Not sure

1) TP removes the 2nd CAT, as per the two above, pump is recommended
2) Yes if you get catless, maybe not if you get the UR resonated one
3) Neil (majesticblueNTO) and I both have the UR combo (DP + TP) and both are resonated TPs. Neil says that it's not much louder than stock, and you heard my car the other day... I don't think it's much louder, just a little deeper tone.

The computer monitors wheel spin and then will issue a correction based on the swas. I rarely, rarely get wheelspin if the tires are warm so maybe that's why it doesn't bother me.

Yea, no need...whenever people try to split things off it just kills everything. At best I'd say we could use a NATOR subcategory in the mazdaspeed section but even then, the topics aren't usually NATOR as much as they are mazdaspeed related.
no need to further separate. Not even a need for a separate section in the speed section.
last thing I need is another forum/website to troll....
Nator isn't something physical, it's a state of mind!

Cool, I thought of that after I posted that it's better to just keep everything within this MS3 section.

I agree with what MBNTO said and was going to bring it up the first time...but I'm not about to go tell everyone they need a tune, so as to avoid perceived conflict of interest by indirectly advertising.

Lol i wouldent have taken it that way, but i understand u dont wanna be the salesman type!
Not really a fan of the msf style "send a random guy your logs/map and let him tune it" but thats my only option at this time.

Yeah, I would rather learn how to tune myself too (and am doing as much). It's lousy how these days the people with the know how are in it for making money rather than sharing their knowledge :( I don't really want to pay for a tune, trust that they do everything right and not understand what they changed and why and how it affects my car.

There is endless knowledge shared on MSF and here. The reason there are people out there doing it for money is because they did their research, took the time to learn it, and will do it for a fee for those who can't be bothered. It's not a case of people withholding knowledge from the general public and charging them for it. It's more like everything else on this planet - if you can't be bothered to learn it yourself you pay those who have. If it takes a while to learn then it will cost more to do it from those who have. Prices are based on learning curves.

People who got the "know" spent hours/days wrenching/tuning their cars, getting frustrated, making mistakes and breaking their own crap. I've made setup changes to the car where it ran so lean, there was a howl sound from the engine bay. Another time, I had a smoke screen come out the back of the car while doing a pull on the 404. This was all for the sake of advancement on the platform and honing my knowledge.
For the record. CelestSpeed3 (Paul), who is part of MSpeed, changes my oil and I pay him the same rate he charges anybody else. I can't stand doing it myself which is why I have him do it. He does it, does it well and without a hitch. Why shouldn't he be paid for it while I sip my coffee and he crawls under the car? Best money I've spent on an oil change and I'm going for another round this week.
Ryan, I offered you some great tuning information over PM. Seeing posts like these really irks me.
As stated by Fobio. If you want to learn yourself, do what we did. Grab your computer, your AccessPORT and get in the car. Start making changes as you see fit and deal with the consequences (good or bad). Its the way we learned but we didn't complain. We won't spoon feed you. Nobody will for anything and they shouldn't.

Seriously, just the tuning section on TM3 alone has tons of info. If you read anybody's log thread, you are bound to find some info. Usually someone has an issue and then a couple posts later, there will be a solution.
A lot of it is just trial and error, and if you're cautious and you tune up instead of tune down, you will MOST LIKELY be safe from zoom zoom boom.

ok folks, I have re-opened this thread. A few things to note
1)Please play nice.
2)Please have patience with the n00bs, and don't flame them/troll them right away
3)The purpose of this thread was to have discussion with regards to the MS3, that may not warrant their own threads. This is not another post whoring thread.
Thank you and welcome back.

Meth testing. 100% meth vs 80/20 vs 50/50.
The video shows how likely a meth fire is with each mixture. Thanks to Neil for bringing it to my attention!

^^^ Oh snap. I can just picture my engine bay going up in smoke.
I'm going back to 80/20.
Yeah, Neil linked me to a 335i engine fire thread, and meth is the suspected cause.
Watching that video gave me flash backs of me blindly mixing meth at the track, using my WWF tank.... Definitely not the smartest idea to pour pure meth near a hot engine! hah.

Was going to respond, but decided not too.
Maybe like the OCC thread, a BPV/BOV one is needed.
Speaking of that, what's the plug that everyone is inadvertently undoing during the OCC install?

They are not undoing anything. Its just a bad connection on the starter. There is a tsb for this.

I have to thank Dennis for sending me the link to that thread... i don't peruse the BMW N54 forums........................................... yet :D
80/20 or 50/50 is a good bet if you're using your WWF tank.... looks like there's a reason why they recommend putting the meth tank in the trunk with proper venting if running 100% meth.
also, if running 100% meth, a fire suppression system like the one i saw at CA today is a schmexy idea! :drool
