Long-term storage options

I would like to put my car in storage for 1-2 years while I work overseas and was curious
- where I should store it?
- how much should I expect to pay per month at a storage facility?
- how I should prep my car?
- should I use a car cover whether my car is outdoor or indoor?

update - just learned TD insurance will only cover the car for 365 days for $106. Anyone know who I should insure the car with or should I not bother?

Were you should store it. The ideal place would be a climate controlled building inside. protecting it from salt, rain, snow and anything else mother nature has to throw at it. As for the car cover I have heard that they actually scratch the car when their is dust build up that gets between the cover and the paint. As for prepping make sure you have a full tank of gas and fuel stabilizer. Make sure the car is cleaned i would recomend taking the wheels off and letting it sit on jackstands so you dont put flat spots in the tires. Either leave the battery hooked up if in a climate controlled area with a trickle charger on it so the battery does not go flat. Just make sure someone checks on the car every month or so, just to make sure the charger didnt burn out or overheat or whatever. It should be fine but you never know. If outside storage is necesary keep the battery somewhere warm as the cold is deadly for batteries.

You probably want to keep it insured, otherwise if it gets damaged or stolen, you're on your own.

From my understanding he wants to keep it insured but according to his insurance they will only allow it to be insured for 1 year if it just sits and does not get driven. IE no plates, just fire, theft and vandalism I assume.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to pay for change of ownership to someone that can keep it in garage then pay for change of ownership back ? Just a thought...

I always store my main car for the winter. Put just fire and theft on it, never use a cover and use Stabil but really one or two years is too long just sell it.

Sorry everyone... apparently I don't have my email notifications on so I just realized people were responding to my post. Yes my insurance will only cover 1 year so I might have to transfer ownership to my father and put it under his.

Your going to lose your monthly storage fee, monthly payment if it's not paid off and depreciation. Why not just sell it?

So after much thought and convincing from TM3 members I've decided to sell my beloved Mazda 3... If none of my friends and family want it then I'll post it for sale on here tomorrow. Thank you for everyones help!
