Nothing wrong with putting a boot where the ugly silver trim is....looks 100x better and can can match any custom interior stuff... Tons of cars with auto transmissions have cloth shift boots! go nuts! And your gauge cluster tells you what gear your in anyways.

I've done this. You gotta remove the silver box around the shifter though to get the boot to fit properly.

How do you consider faking an automatic to be a manual clean? Whatever float's your boat right

Rob23
01-25-2011, 09:26 PM
i don't see it as faking, it comes stock in some automatic cars.

So? a boot is a boot, he want's to cover the PNDR+, how is that the same? Those SUV's you mention also have the labeling on them either on the outer trim or dash light's. Like I said, what ever float's your boat! Not going to argue further.

Which SUVs come with boots that actually block the writing that says "PRND"?

Not stock, I presume? The 6-series' boot doesn't block the normal lettering of the StepTronic transmission.

sol_searchin
01-26-2011, 12:00 PM
The 6 series boot is just on the shift lever itself, The PNDR is displayed to the left of the boot so no it's not over top of it. No point in arguing though waste of finger energy lol

If the OP wants to put a boot over his automatic while not blocking the PRND lettering, that's just fine.

My car is automatic. Yes, my ride is automatic.... I see nothing wrong with it; I'm happy with it. I know how to drive stick (haven't driven stick in years, but I still know how). I just chose an automatic car out of convenience for my lifestyle.
I have a shift boot over my shifter. I'm not trying to make it look stick by any means. I just like it as it does give it a cleaner look. I've had it on for over 3 years and have had no issues, nor has the numerious mechanics and technicians who have serviced my vehicle.
If you like it; great. If you don't; great. Everyone's entitled to their opinioins. I just detest ignorant comments in general (... and that goes regardless if you are for or against).

You guys are too harsh!

Im sure he wants to do it for a cleaner look.

When i ventured into this i was hoping just to get rid of the ugly silver trim! I would have had no problem i he trim piece was black. But after a while the silver relly dings up and you start seeing marks on it..
It isn't pretty!

Lets not turn this into a manual vs auto fanboy thread :)

Ps.. I never got around to putting the boot on!

This thread hasn't even touched on auto vs manual and won't. Automatic is just as good as manual they serve their purposes! Putting a boot over the shifter/PNDR/trim trying to make it look like a manual essentially look's real stupid.

Yeah. I drove automatic for years (up until I got my Mazda3 this month, I'd only ever had automatic cars), and I do see their benefits (especially when I drove from Toronto to Mississauga in rush hour, and have nothing against them.

I wouldn't do it but won't call it stupid cause if it the person likes it and/or it gives a cleaner look then go for it. Everyone's car is theres to mod their way and not everyone is going to like everything we do to our cars. I think to go to the extent of saying it really looks stupid is completely unnecessary. Just leave it at "Not a fan but as long as you like it". It's a much politer way of going about it.

you guys need to get off your "i drive manual high horses" if someone with an auto wants to put a boot on their car then they can do so. i drive manual, but i don't think im so special. and to call the OP an idiot just because he posted a thread about putting a boot over the shifter, your just trying to be an ass.

It could compromise safety of the vehicle when a tech or service guy who doesn't know anything gets into it.

If someone has to drive your car in an emergency (if you've been hurt or something) it could complicate the entire situation because they don't know what to do with the gearshift.

Even though no one who has ever operated my car (family, friends, technicians, mechanics, etc.) has ever had an issue with operating it with the boot over the shifter, you do bring up a valid point.
