I'd like to thank TM3 for your advice and help in buying a car.
Last week I signed the papers on a beautiful Black Mica 2006 GT sedan with leather and the 5-speed from Scarboro Mazda.
I dealt with Aman Bassi and had an excellent sales experience.
After I test drove what felt like hundreds of GTs from '04-'08 across Toronto, I finally found this one that I absolutely love.
Here's the issue that I ran into though:
-The car has brand new tires, brand new brakes, and not a SPOT of rust anywhere on it. I was pleasantly surprised. Even the wiper blades are fresh.
-While on the test drive, there was a tiny little rattle coming from the engine bay. The sales guy (Aman) says, "no problem, it'll be dealt with before delivery." I actually expected to show up and have to throw a fuss because it would still be there. However, Aman calls me up the next day (24 hours before I was supposed to take delivery) and says, "the rattle is a huge issue. The tech guys say this car needs a brand new engine".
Of course, this was covered under the sales agreement, and even though the dealership would be out thousands (I actually got a SMOKING deal on this car), they honored it.
It's now been a week and I will be taking delivery of my 2006 GT with the BRAND new engine tomorrow afternoon.
Quick questions - What should I be checking for to make sure everything's been fixed right? Also, is there an easy way (even though I'm sure the dealership did it right) to tell whether or not they replaced it with another 2.3 and didn't "accidentally" put in a 2.0?
Also, MmMmMmm black on black leather... I'll be dropping it off at Audio Heaven within the week to get my double-din custom audio system put in and the windows tinted 17% all around. I'm abnormally excited.
Here's to my first manual, and my first Mazda! :headbang :hawt

Congrats on a sweet deal.
As for checking the engine, I would think the easiest way to tell (although not 100% conclusive because people can change this) is to get under the car and see what type of oil filter it takes. If it has a spin on (metal) filter, it's most likely a 2.0L (although it could be a converted 2.3L, but IMO the chances of that are slim). If it has a plastic cap with a cartridge type filter, it will be a 2.3L. That's the only way I can think of off the top of my head.
Congrates on your car
As for been converened about the dealer not put the proper motor will not happen.. They will put the the proper motor

It was funny though; while I was initially looking at the cars, the sales team was pushing me toward an identical charcoal car for a slightly lower price, with slightly higher mileage and no leather. They seemed pretty disappointed after I picked the black one, and asked me again after they discovered the engine problem if I wanted to get the charcoal one instead.

It would be covered under the powertrain warranty. No dealer would honour the deal if they were going to lose hundreds, let alone thousands..
Enjoy your car..
Hey shoot me the VIN if you want some more history on it.

Yeah, off the top of my head, the only way you can tell is if it has a spin-on oil filter (2.0) or a cartridge filter (2.3L). You can also drive it and it and if it feels weaker than you remember, then check the oil filter setup to see which engine it is. Also ask to see the papers (if any) that come with the new engine, to verify that it is brand new and not from a scrapyard or something.
For future reference, always do oil changes at a good shop that uses Mazda-specific oil filter removal tools, so that no damage is done to the oil filter casing. Some shops do it the cheap and easy way with a large adjustable wrench... not a good idea. Also the O-rings need to be replaced at every oil change, the OEM oil filter comes with the filter itself and 2 replacement O-rings. I strongly recommend you do your servicing at Street Performance with Jimmy, he showed me his Mazda oil-filter wrench and he knew *exactly* how to replace the oil filter with no damage.
Oh, and don't use the recommended 5W-20... use 5W-30, regular or synthetic, whichever you prefer, but stay away from 5W-20. Do this after 1000 km with your car's new engine and factory-filled oil/filter. It will not void your warranty. Heard too many bad things about 5W-20...
Welcome and enjoy your car! :)

Just took delivery!
Car looks great and feels great. Drove it home from Scarborough to Mississauga on the 401 in rush hour; first time driving stick in that much traffic. An experience.

I'm now looking for a mint-condition OEM shift knob (would like an 07+ one... but would take an 04-06 one at the right price. Condition is key. Anyone know where to get it?
Thanks guys!

Thanks buddy. Hit me up for a mini-meet sometime.
Nah, I think the door mouldings will stay. I go to UTM, so parking lot dings are pretty much unavoidable. Plus, I'm trying to stay away from the mod bug on this car. It's going to visit Jeff at Audio Heaven on Thursday and getting the entire audio system decked out, the remote start/alarm installed, and the windows tinted. Other than that, nothing really.
Anyone know about a new OEM shift knob?

I would pick up a Mazda2 shift knob, they have a nice silver trim on it compared to the mazda3 and with the tm3 discount they are only $55 + tax brand new
