So I have a potential buyer for my Samsung phone which is BNIB. He wants to try it out by putting a SIM card in it.

Since this is BNIB, is it generally acceptable for someone to open the box up? Opening it up and using it like that is going to lower the cost of the phone.

Any advice from someone who has sold a BNIB phone is much appreciated.

I would say no...

if it is locked to a provider, and he has the providers sim... it will work.

If it's anything like my Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, the box isn't sealed. If you're not comfortable with the proposition, make sure the buyer agrees that once the phone boots up and works with the SIM card he's bringing, that he must pay for the phone.

Conversely, make sure you've done your homework. If your phone is a Bell phone, make sure he's sticking in a Bell SIM.

The phone I have has tape on each side to seal it. I suspect once I remove the tape, it won't be "sealed" anymore

If the phone is locked, I would say no to letting the guy try it.

If it is unlocked, I would make the guy agree to buy it upon proving it works with their sim.

I agree with this. If I was the buyer, I'd like to make sure it works in my carrier before buying it.

agree on terms with them first. when i sold my bnib phone, me and buyer agree they'll take it under the condition that the phone works FINE with their sim card in there... then in person, i hand it over to them, they turn it on, make a phone call, played around the menu a little and paid me.

thats just me... if i get the feeling the buyer isn't serious I wouldn't allow that of course
