So the other day my passenger side headlight went out. A couple of days later i took it to a local mazda dealership to have them look at it. It turns out that the wire going from the ballast to the headlight malfunctioned and in turn melted the plastic housing around the wire. The mechanic informed me that i will need a new headlight assembly seeing how just the wire can not be fixed, as well as a new ballast. The next day while driving to school in the morning I turned on the headlights and the passenger headlight turned on. I then stopped for a coffee and turned my headlights back on, and the passenger side headlight remained out. So now I thinking that the ballast is still working. I was wondering if someone knew a repitale mechanic so i can see about getting a second opinion

These are OEM xenon's? I'm sure you can rewire the melted wire but you do have a short some were and that's the thing I would get checked out.

This should be covered under warranty if everything was still stock.

the service advisor from the mazda dealership said he would call them for me to try and see about some options. the service advisor called me back saying that there is no help he can offer.

If you aren't running any aftermarket HID's and ballasts and this is the stock set-up on the car, then this is covered under warranty since you have a 2009. The dealer should be covering this fully at no charge to you. Take it back in and make them cover it, or better yet, go to a dealership that doesn't have an asshat as a service advisor.

So heres an update on whats happened. Went to another dealership (Dave Wood Mazda) and got a second opinion. So I do need a new headlight assembly, a new ballast. Apparently the rubber cover came off allowing water and debri into the electrical connection. So this new dealership submitted a warranty claim for the ballast (not the headlight assembly, Mazda claims that a wear item). So I got a call today saying that the submitted warranty claim was accepted and that the ballast and installation in will be covered by Mazda. :) So instead of a $1000 bill I will end up with a $570 bill.

I would highly recomed you request the part back that you are paying for. Something seems very fishy to me.

I used to have these problems with my GM dealer previously.
They'd always try to claim that stuff wasn't covered under warranty. On a 2yr old car with 40K (my previous car), nothing should be coming out of pocket for stuff that I didn't break. period. I had suspension problems after a year with my G6 under normal driving conditions. I never paid for the repairs (even though they tried).
Surely this would not be a "normal wear" item on an '09. There was a failure in the system, you shouldn't have electricals shorting out like that from normal wear after 2 years. Even if the bulb died, I still wouldn't pay for it, that's not normal wear time for a bulb, there was a problem that would have caused it to die. Either defective bulb or a short that's caused it.
Just complain some more, tell them you aren't paying to fix a problem with the quality of manufacture of the car for something under warranty.
