So last week I ordered a set of Audio Technica ATH M50 headphones from ebay. Total was $119.50 + $18.50 S&H.
That's all fine and dandy until today, when I got a shipping slip from UPS. It listed that i owed $59.92 in duties.
WTF!!!!!
Any ideas on what I can do about it? Any suggestions on how to deal with this one?

Nothing. Same thing happened. Learned to never use UPS to ship from states.
You could have done something BEFORE it went through customs...but too late now.

it's not all Duty charges. It is $29 for customs clearance. Roughly $18 in tax, the rest is Duty.
What can you do about it? At this point not much. In the future, clear it yourself, or have it shipped USPS.

As far as i noe you have to be at the border to clear it yourself if it is an item bought from the us
Any personal items you can do from the closest customs office

I buy and sell a lot of very high end audio gear and always clear it myself.

Well, I have some good news to report. I called them up yesterday and complained about the ridiculous charge. The guy on the phone told me that I could avoid the brokerage fees ($44) if I declared the item myself. I told him I want to do that. He comes back and tells me that since it is already through customs, I can no longer declare it myself. He give me a "one time offer" to waive the brokerage fee. I will now pay $14 in taxes.

USPS is good, never get fees. Purolator is the best courier service with no fees for me so far. I've ordered speakers, computer electronics, no charges from USA.

here's a website that allows you to calculate your delivery charges (customs, taxes, brokerage, etc...) depending on your courier service: http://www.thefinalcost.com/

Thank me later. ;)
I routinely drop ship things at my US address, go shopping for the day and then bring this stuff across the border on the way home.

I usually use BlueWater Shipping Depot in Sarnia. I just figured for such a small item, it's not worth it for me to drive 2 hrs.

USPS does it best. I got 2 Moody guitar straps from California around christmas time. Total of about $300. I didn't pay a single cent of taxes or duty fees.

+1 USPS if you had the choice to select between the two. Never got any charges but delivery time is slower.
I've had horrible experiences with UPS. If your not home and want to pick it up yourself, there is only one location for pick-up :loco and waited about 2 hours for them to find my package :flaming

I've used CBIusa for all my US shipping. They're literally 2 minutes across the Falls, zip 14303. I had my tires shipped there as well.

Some people/companies (cough cough shamless plug ... ME)
will bring the stuff across legally, for a small fee. I go across often enough to get stuff for my moms business, all by buddies that I autocross with always ask me to bring stuff over for them. Usually using CBI
