family day is only observed in Ontario. i don't why mcguinty even made the family day a stat in the first place. who the hell needs a one day in a year with your family when everyone is working diff times of the day. family day is waste of time nothing more than that...a vote grabbing BS by mcguinty.

Family day isn't a national holiday. It's an Ontario (Also Alberta and Saskatchewan I think) holiday and it's not a Stat. So technically you would even have to work it if your company told you to. I know a lot of people who have to work it.
It does suck though if you have to go to school on it though. Sounds like he's giving you an option though which is odd. At least that's how it sounds from the way you've worded it.
EDIT: I've done a quick read and it is claimed to be a Stat but technically you can be forced to work it since the Civic holiday isn't a Stat or whatever. I don't know why it's like this but there is some kind of loophole lol.

Dude, this doesn't apply to everyone. I have almost had to work this day before. I know people who work that day because their company gives them the Civic holiday off.

Family day occurs during my reading week so it's kinda pointless for me haha. As for going to class, don't if you don't have to and if you miss class notes, homework, etc. just ask a classmate to help you out.

Just get everyone on board and vote no class. He probably doesn't want to go in either but felt he had to offer.

To the OP...it really falls back to the school and whether or not they decide the school is open/closed and whether or not classes are happening. That said, university/college classes that fall on Monday's & Friday's are prone to this issue and in my experience the make-up time was negotiated with the class. As for the teacher saying you're going to be behind due to reading week...that's just BS...the semester schedule already compensates for that.
The first year of Family Day my office was open and we had to work...but that was the only year that happened as we now have it off.

It depends on whether the company is federally regulated.

Yeah see that is probably why you don't get Family day. I don't get either of those.

When you and your significant other work at different times and don't get to spend time together as a family you may learn to appreciate a day together.. until then, your opinion of this is skewed.

I agree with you Jeff. However, keep in mind what transpired because of this new holiday. It is federally legislated that employers only have to provide you a specific number of paid holidays each year. So, what most companies ended up doing, is they gave people the new 'Family Day' stat holiday in February and then removed the entitlement to another holiday in the year. The one that ended up being removed in most cases was the non-statuatory holiday at the end of the first week in August, called Civic Day or Simcoe Day. In my company, they used to provide Christmas Eve as a holiday and that was cancelled as a result of 'Family Day'.
While I am all for a new stat holiday, I think most people would prefer spending additional time with their families at Christmas, or in August when it is warm enough to enjoy being outdoors together consistently.
McGuinty passed Family Day when he was last up for re-election. Obviously it helped work for him. He just conveniently omitted the fact that it wasn't going to be an additional holiday in the calendar year, but just a replacement for another one.
I'd rather have Christmas Eve or the Civic holiday personally.
