Like a numpty I left my stainless steel bbq outside in the yard for the winter without a cover. The steel is rusting on the surface and I'm debating my options. Im thinking use a metal cleaner and buff out the rust. (I don't know what product would do this the best) Or use some black bbq paint and give it a paint job.
Any other ideas/options or products that will help? Obviously I will wait till the weather warms up.
Thanks

depending how bad it is, I would start with this stuff

I doubt the rust has corroded through. so hopefully it works.
I've used this stuff on rusty exhaust tips - works great!

If I were you, I would use this as an excuse to buy a new glorious meat searing grill of epic proportions...

That's a legitimate reason to buy a new alter of awesomeness. "Honey, the bbq is not good, it's all rusty and flaking. Do you really want rust flakes in your food? I didn't think so."

a little steel wool and a little elbow grease will be fine.
Unlikely its rusted that bad for one winter season.

As an alternative may I recommend the following:
http://www.uncrate.com/men/images/2011/03/frontgate-viking-grill-xl.jpg
The Frontgate Viking Grill (http://www.frontgate.com/jump.jsp?k=XXW29004&itemID=33622&itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=33622) - features a double-walled hood for heat retention, an open-cart design for easy access to accessories, three 25,000 BTU stainless steel burners spread across 836 square inches of porcelain-coated cooking surface, a push-button ignition, a chrome-plated warming rack, and an integrated thermometer to ensure your food is cooked perfectly.
Then the piece de resistance:

Fontana Gusto Wood-Fired Outdoor Oven (http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/fontana-gusto-wood-fired-outdoor-oven/) - Sporting a convection fan for even baking, a preheat time of just five minutes, a trio of wire racks to hold plenty of food, a built-in timer, and a windowed fire chamber, the Fontana Gusto also sports a composite stone bottom for baking pizzas and breads with flavor and crispiness normally reserved for high-end pizzerias.
