So- recently I have noticed that when i come back for the weekend (not @ my car mon-thurs) for the first few minutes i experience:...

1) best way to describe it as worn brake pads? grinding noise when i brake, but only for first few min of stopping

2) today i got home and drove just round the corner to the store.. I always idle 5min when I havent driven in awhile, and my car is stored in the garage too..

SO while just rolling up my street at like 20-25km/h.. odd grinding type of noise while just in motion.. foot wasn't on the brake or gas. again this only happened for the first few minutes..

so my question is- is this cause i'm not driving for 3-4days and then coming home? its just warming up again or something? or is it something else? I'm getting a next service done soon but i want to be able to maybe better describe the problem

Thanks!

sounds like you are describing the noise of the rust on your rotors being taken off by the pads on the first braking of the day..

EDIT: Forgot to mention it is completely normal if that is the case.. almost all cars rotors show rust even from sitting 8 hrs or so.

That, plus the grinding may be an ice build up in your wheel well.

thx for the quick replies guys- even though i got rustproofing this is regular? I have taken out the car since and not 1 weird noise. Good to know this isnt so unusual..

This happens to me whenever it's wet or if the car sits a while. It's normal for cars with disc brakes.

You don't rustproof the rotors, it would just wear off.

exactly what Jeff mentioned, grinding without brakes applied is a sympton of worn rotors.

You can often see some of the oxidation that has formed on the rotors so I'd inspect for those to confirm it is just "normal" rust...

Hi malfunktion,

Its just rust accumulated on your disk by oxydation since its metal and you didn't use it for like 3-4 days. Its normal and everyone would have the same problem as you so nothing to worry about.

see ya!

^This. Totally normal. Brakes are perfect. Drive on!

Your brakes wouldn't work if you sprayed rustproofing on your rotors...someone could die!
