View Full Version : Testimonial to my old car.

A friend basically wrote a testimonial to the Mustang he just traded in, and it made me so emotional I had to express how I truly feel about my Intrepid in words:

In January of 2010, my Intrepid R/T became no longer mine.

I know it ought not to be such a terribly big deal. I owned the car for five years, which is a good run, and it’s not like I didn’t know that our time together would end at some point. And after all, it is just a car. A bunch of metal and plastic and glass and leatherette that all come together into shape. It’s just a machine, or a hunk of metal.

Or is it?

This car has been with me through so many special moments. It was there when I first discovered the joy of horsepower. It was the car that took me to high school. It moved me into the transition to university. It was there when I got my first speeding ticket. It took me on my first date. It was there when I met the girl who changed my life forever. We had wins together. We had losses. We even had arguments (but not many).

Sitting here, as my car sits miles away in the parking lot of a sleazy car dealership, I have a feeling that I’ll never drive it again. I went through all my lasts with it. The last time I’ll get into the car. The last time I’ll get out. The last time I’ll skip MP3 tracks. The last time it will ever bring me home safely.

We tore through back roads, we clipped straight apexes, we even flew a few times. We crossed streams. When the Erindale River flooded, we drove up and down the banks, letting the front tires struggle for grip, spitting mud and clay all over the place, and loving every minute of it.

This car was there for me when I was angry, sad, or when I needed comfort. All it ever asked of me was a little bit of gas and a wash every once in a while. It was more than any car could be; it was my family.

I understand that an Intrepid R/T is not a car that kids doodle in their notebooks. I know it will never really be an object of lust. No one daydreams about a garage full of Intrepid R/Ts. But this sport sedan with its big V6, four-speed automatic, and front wheel drive, was a blast every time I pushed it. It always worked as hard as I wanted it to. It was a sports car when I pushed. It was a sedate cruiser when I didn’t.

Thinking about the fact that it’s gone now, I feel a deep sense of loss. This car wasn’t my first. But it was the first car I truly loved. I’ll never be as attached to any other car, or perhaps, any other material object, as I am to this one.

This car may not be anything to anyone, but it really is everything to me.

Intrepid, The Beast, Sarkarmobile, Pimpmobile, you will be truly and sorely missed. I hope our paths cross again.

Extremely well written. Unfortunately, we have a few intrepids & sebrings as fleet vehicles at work... and without the bond you had with your pimpmobile, I have to say I really dont enjoy driving them at all!

Some people would say "it's only a Mazda". ;) I'm not defending my old car but there's no need to bash.

Very well written!
I can relate entirely, before getting my Mazda I had a '94 Chevy Corsica for 5 years that I loved dearly. When I bought my new car, my Dad suggested scrapping the Corsica since it wasn't worth 'the effort required to advertise and sell it'. That definitely caused me a sense of panic, as I have a certain loyalty and attachment that comes from defending my car for years against people who referred to it as a sh*tbox. It certainly was worth selling to me (I honestly wanted to keep it, until my dad pointed out the cost of insurance and maintaining two cars.) Fortunately my best friend bought it from me for $400, so I still get to see it and ride in it, but sitting in the passenger seat just isn't the same.

I can certainly understand your tribute to your Intrepid! It looks like it was (and I'm sure still is) a nice car!

Not sure what happend to my post.....

But basically what I said was that I can relate to this thread.
Back when I was trying to get out of the tuner/ mod scene, I picked up a 2001 Chrysler Intrepid. By far the most comfortable ride I've ever owned. Never had any issues with it, very comfortable to drive, and very roomy. I don't miss parallel parking it, but I really miss driving it.

I came in here looking to be impressed and impressed I am. That's a really nice intrepid!

My friend's parents used to have a concorde. We used to call it a boat but it was awesome for roadtrips, it felt like being in a limo compared to a Mazda3.
Only thing is it drank gas like crazy!

Best part is, I had a supercharged 6 in it, and it got just about the same mileage as the Mazda3 GT.

Here are a couple more pictures:

It's been de-modded, the leather seats replaced with cloth, the wood trim replaced with the plastic, the projector HIDs replaced with factory lights, the wood wheel replaced with a leather one, the custom stereo replaced with an OEM CD player, and passed through auction after auction... but... there she is.

Also, she really has 230K on her, not 180. Also, that's a bone-stock 3.5L High Output on there, nothing custom left about it.

Wow! That's a lot of work to mod and de-mod. You even swapped the engine back out!?
I assume you parted out all the custom stuff, was that difficult to do? I have no idea what the intrepid/300 mod scene is like.
Why not just begin driving it in the winter instead of a Mazda? Because you know someone's going to buy that car as a winter beater...

I'm going to forward your thread to a coworker of mine, he has a 1st gen 300 and he's a gear head. He'll be quite interested in your work.

I also wanted to ask, the girl who changed your life, was it the car or was it a real girl? =)

I did part out all the mods. Made a few grand on that. I got rid of it because I just got into law school at U of T; I really don't need a performance-oriented car right now. I bought the Mazda because it's a very nice, efficient little car that I can toss around right now and trade in for my Porsche 911 when I graduate. It also had a bunch of things go wrong (transmission failed, power steering pump went out, A/C was going out, some body rust in conspicuous areas. Additionally to all that, I just really wanted to be done with the addiction around modding, and the only way to be rid of that was to be rid of the car altogether.

I'm still on the Intrepid/300 boards; I made some great friends over the course of my 5 years there. I'm pretty familiar with all the major mods everyone does over there; tell him to shoot me a call or an e-mail... I probably have a bunch of stuff in my basement he could use.
