View Full Version : Radio active cars anyone?
How safe to buy / use new Japanese cars and parts in the future? I guess they would have some trace of radio-active level. I haven't heard of any plans to check it? May be, it is too soon.

We're not even close to that point. If they have a catastrophic meltdown, then you can start worrying. At this point the only place with elevated radiation levels is the plant itself.

lmao mazda 3's are made in hiroshima..not even close to the plant.

Does your microwave leak radiation? Mine doesn't, as almost all microwaves. Even if it does, the radiation produced is non-ionizing. It therefore does not have the cancer risks associated with ionizing radiation.
Radiation levels in spinach and milk in Japan have been reported.

stop driving a car? that kills you too,
stop breathing the air? that will eventually kill us too.
everythings gonna kill us at one point.

I'd be more worried about water damage............. of course Mazda is the company that crushed up a couple thousand cars because they were tilted on a ship for an extended length of time.
The reality of the the situation: Once you are about 20 km away from the troubled reactor you are more likely to be run over by a bus than you are to be affected by radiation.

Somewhere in Japan, this is happening right now too.

I think the western media is playing up radiation levels waay too much.
I mean CNN was flashing a banner sayin "radiation reaches California", they just scare people. In realit. Its is a negligable amount that gets carried over in the air.
Almost every nuclear regulatory agency in the US is on Japan, stating how Japan is not coming out with straight forward info.
I am really beginning to wonder if the media has other motives.
As for the Japanease, hats off to them and how they have handled everything, I think people are doing a damn good job!
There is no risk AT ALL buying anything for Japan is fine.
Stupid Western Media

While it's probably over-the-top, it's not totally ridiculous - Nissan has a plant in Iwaki, F.ukushima Prefecture, which is only 48 kilometres from Okuma, F.ukushima (where F.ukushima Dai-Ichi is located). This plant, as well as one in Tochigi, Tochigi Prefecture (225km from Okuma), have temporarily stopped production (http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/14/nissan-idUSTKZ00682920110314) (among other plants) after the earthquake/tsunami.
Mazda's plants in Hiroshima and Hofu are absolutely nowhere even remotely close to the affected area, though.
Also, apparently vBulletin filters F-U-K, making romanized spelling of 福島 impossible without workarounds.

it doesnt take a radiologist to know that radiation, especially ionized radiation, has to be absorbed. im trying to think of how a metal car would absorb the ionized radiation. i dont see how this would be possible. i dont think this is a problem at all. i agree this is a complete build up and false telling of information by the media.

I agree that it's a vastly exaggerated risk, but I think the mechanism of concern is that airborne radioisotopes settle on/into the vehicles waiting to be shipping out (for example into the ventilation system or fabrics of the seats). The isotopes will continue to decay for some time, emitting ionizing radiation which may/will be absorbed by the driver.
Once again though - it's pretty well exaggerated. IF there were airborne radioisotopes in any appreciable quantity, I would imagine the majority would settle onto the exterior of the vehicle and would be largely removed by a simple wash before being shipped out. Even then, the amount of ionizing radiation which one might be exposed to is probably far less than you would be exposed to in the basement of a house due to naturally occurring radon.

Yeh. it's most definately sad and ridiculous the amount that the news is playing up the situation in Japan with regards to the nuclear plant. Obviously it's a serious situation, and there is cause for concern if/when it gets to the point where they have lost total control. They blow it out of proportion by showing the maps with 'projected' fallout coming to the States, then when people panic they have to back track and say "There is no threat of radiation coming over here, stop buying potassium iodine pills" haha.
For the people who have the time to be watching the news and freaking out about it, you should instead spend that time searching the web and educate yourselves on nuclear plants and radiation so you can understand what the actual risks are, instead of just buying into the major networks that are fear mongering and sometimes don't even have their facts exactly right.
Also, it's sad how many people are now protesting about shutting down nuke plants here in Canada....they can't be serious can they?

PS. not to sound like a douche, but to the OP, if you can't even spell radioactive maybe you do need to read up some more on it.

I don't know about all of you, but my car's radio is active :loco
On a serious note though, I guess it would all depend on how much radiation would be leaking...but here's a handy chart to show radiation doses in daily lives...
http://imgs.xkcd.com/blag/radiation.png
Note: Chart may not be exact and is for general use only...as stated by the warning on the bottom of the image. Still a decent source of information...
I HIGHLY doubt if anything DOES get absorbed, it would be a high enough dose to do anything serious...

Mazda haulted their production for a couple of days as well.. as a sign of respect for their employees to be with their families while all of this is happening.
