Watching this made me even more thankful I have an FMIC. This test really shows just how much of an affect heat soak has on the real life power and torque of the MS3.

He attributed it to tire temps though....I wouldn't guess the MS3 would be that down on power due to heat soak to cut the burn out length in half.

If you notice, the GTI gets very consistent lengths. Wouldn't the tires on the GTI heat up similarly? They are both on street tires.

When I had my stock intercooler I would lose so much power I couldn't break the front loose at full throttle in first gear. The car also just felt so much slower. If I would stop then take off again after only waiting a couple seconds (not enough time for heat soak) it would break loose no problem and feel like it should. My tires wouldn't have cooled much in a couple seconds.

Also, it's been shown on the dyno over and over that the MS3 loses 40-60 whp from the first run to the third (without proper cooling), I've experienced this first hand. The only way my car got another decent run in was when I put a ton of snow directly on the intercooler. Watching it all melt and steam away was funny.

The 2010's do have the TMIC with hood scoop though...I honestly don't notice much power loss if I'm driving hard in mine if at all. Although it's been colder temps lately so we'll see what happens in the summer. That said, the Pirelli's on the GTi aren't the same as the dunlops on the MS3...it would be interesting to see what each set of tires on each car would result in (ie to rule out tires)

I'm surprised he didn't break the dashboard with the wheel hop, assuming he was using a stock engine mount.

Heat soak is a huge negative for the Speed 3. If you look at the video, he doesn't actually go the whole length of the drag strip so the intercooler keeps heating up not to mention leaving the car there idling.

LOL. im really suprised he didnt break anything on the speed. damn 7k cluthc drops cant be good for the motor mounts.

Must be nice to not have to worry about the long term effects of your driving...........

I'm still on original motor, turbo, clutch and tranny and it's been over 123,000kms. I'm sure it's not THAT bad. I've only ever gotten wheel hop at the drag strip, even when I had the stock RMM.

Maybe. :P What's it to you?

Usually when I wanna have some fun on a back road with old tires I'll drop the clutch in first around 4-5k then rev it so it stays between 6-6.5k as the tires are spinning. Can do it in 2nd gear too when it's wet out. And even when it's dry with winter tires.
