View Full Version : How do you keep birds from pooping on your driveway?

I did use the search and I might get mit-gee d but whatever. This is insane. Every summer, a HUGE flock of birds sit atop a tree on my house and poop like crazy on my car. Sometimes its white, sometimes its brown and SOMETIMES ORANGE. It sickens me and now that my family have new cars, I don't want a single drop of bird crap on them since I detail my car every spring/summer and I do not want to waste time trying to remove bird crap on my car. Are there any natural remedies I can do to prevent them from hanging on the tree? The easiest thing is to cut it down but I don't want to do that. I heard hanging used cds on the top deter them away as birds do not like shiny objects. I was thinking about hanging those owls you get at crappy tire to scare them away. What do you use or what works? I need to implement something before the weather gets warmer. I know I posted this on RFD but I want to hear what fellow TM3ers use. No jokes please as I'm sure you don't want acidic bird poop on your cars.

I'd suggest you buy those fake owls as they'll be intimated by it.

Anything that looks real. I've seen them at Canadian Tire and Home Depot.

Try a hunting store. You should be able to find some fake owls there..... but if you do change your mind... you'll also find the shotgun there too....
either way... it will have both solutions... LOL

Also.. I've seen "spike strips" on a number of building downtown. Im sure you could fabricate one or find one somewhere. But its only really effective if the birds always stay on one particular branch.

There are some bird "repellants". The best option i can give is the spiked bars they put on signs and bridges in T.O. They cant land on it so any branch that goes above the driveway slap it on there,

Another option is to get one of thoes car ports from crappy tire or home depot. doesnt stop the birds but stops the crap

That won't work. My tree is really old and tall. Almost as big as ones you see in a forest.

Think outside the box and cut the tree down. And then use the wood to build a box.

This actually reminds me, since I don't recall anyone asking - what kind of birds are you having problems with specifically, Ogata?

If they're dumb birds, I think the Owls will work... But not for crows. Crows are bloody smart.

It might work for the first few days. After that, the birds just get accustomed to it and realize it is inanimate. I have one of these perched and hanging over my boat in a covered slip. In theory, it is to prevent Swallows from making their mud nests in the rafters over the boat. Completely ineffectual. It doesn't even scare other birds. They've actually sat right on its head at times. :sad

Ever since Auguest of last year we have had a Coopers hawk chill at my house. He perches either on the fence in the backyard or on the light pole in front of the house. Needless to say the black birds that were nesting in the blue spruces along my drive way were kicked out. The Hawk was eating the babies. The hawk was back just yesterday mowing down a sparrow, in my backyard.

Yup... It was pretty funny actually. Sitting at the back of the boat while in the slip and having a drink and listening to tunes. My wife is reading a magazine and casually looks up, smiles slightly and in her very British, understated and nonchalant way, says, "Your Owl, I really don't think it is working...". She then goes back to reading.

I burst out laughing when I saw the Swallow sitting on its head.

I now use a Slingshot and ball-bearings. Much more effective.

I know they arn't crows because of the sound they make. Its just endless chirping at 5:30AM in the morning. I might try the owl

My relatives did discuss about trimming three branch's so they won't have a spot to land and essentialy make the tree a stick though I don't know if that would help. Anyone know of any contracters who can do that?
