How Much gas is really left??????2010

okay so im used to the old fashion gas meter where when u run empty u still have like a good 1 hour or so befor fill up. nowwith the 2010 as soon as the lights on i scramble for a gas station after hit hits the 1block and the light turns on how far can i keep going?
dose the block get smaller?
i tried to search for it online aswell as the site any inputs??
