When buying a Magnaflow muffler, is there a specific one for my 06 mazda 3 or can I really buy any and then custom fit it?

Yes there are specific ones, not a specific one. You need to be aware of size; you can not fit just any old magflow on your car. I'm running a 16x9x4 straight through design. Mine used to thump against the heat shield around the gas tank.

I have the 11214 magnaflow muffler installed on my stock exhaust and it fits fine.

Yeah I was actually looking at the #11214. Sounds nice. Did you get it done or do it yourself? I wonder what they'd sink me for to get it done professionally.

I'm assuming you have accounted for the ID of the pipe. If not, make sure you buy the right size.

As for getting it installed professionally vs. DIY, if you have the skills I'd say DIY. If not, for custom exhaust work, I suggest Alex Ng at Exotic Motoring.

Mazda 3 2006 2.3l -#15861

Or this will fit a 06 also..

Mazda 3 2007 2.0l or 2.3l - #16786

I got the #16783 on my 06 2.3l

Check the part # at magnaflow.com

Does it sound like every other Magnaflow?

Well, its a lot quieter than a magnaflow catback. It's basically going to sound like stock with a little bit more rumble.

One of the options is to also get rid of the resonator when you install the muffler. That will give you a sound pretty much identical to an actual cat-back kit.

I don't think that's something anyone can DIY - at least not if you want it done proper and have it welded. That said, a muffler swap and a resonator delete is a pretty simple job for any exhaust shop. So price-wise it really shouldn't be all that bad - when I had that done a little while ago my local exhaust shop got it done for $270 - that included a magnaflow muffler, stainless 2" piping to replace the resonator, and all welding and labor. Everything else was left stock - so cat-to-resonator and muffler-to-tip piping was left stock - which, by the way, is already a very respectable 2". In the end I'd be very amazed if anyone can tell the difference between the sound of my set up and an actual magnaflow cat-back kit.

As for which exact model and size muffler to get, I'd just let the exhaust shop worry about it. At least that way if it doesn't fit they'll be the ones ordering a new muffler.
