Hackers have taken down Sony and PlayStation.com which has consequently taken the PlayStation Network offline.

Speaking on an IRC chat a group of hackers, who are known as Anonymous, have successfully taken down several Sony-owned websites. One of which is PlayStation.com as well as Sony.com (although the site is slowly coming back). The attack is caused via a DDoS attack which is a distributed denial-of-service attack.

Also, the PlayStation Network is experiencing connection issues for PS3 owners. Sony tweeted:

PSN currently undergoing sporadic maintenance. Access to the PSN may be interrupted throughout the day. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The hackers stated that the attacks won’t stop until “sony do a press release”.

The hacker’s actions are due to a war on Sony they declared yesterday. The hackers said:

Congratulations, Sony. You now have now received the undivided attention of Anonymous. Your recent legal action against our follow hackers, Geohot and Graf_Chokolo, has not only alarmed us, it has been deemed wholly unforgivable.”

You have now abused the judicial system in an attempt to censor information on how your products work. You have victimised your own customers merely for possessing and sharing information, and continue to target every person who seeks this information. In doing so you have violated the privacy of thousands. This is the information they were willing to teach the world for free. The very same information you wish to suppress for sake of corporate greed and complete control of the users.

Now you will experience the wrath of Anonymous. You saw a hornets nest, and stuck your p*nises in it. You must face the consequences of your actions, Anonymous style.

Knowledge is Free. We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not Forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.

^^ Lol... People standing up for what they believe in are idiots? What do you think protesters do when they get entire streets closed down for their marches and rallies? It pisses off a bunch of motorists and people just trying to move around the city. It's a temporary inconvenience for people who actually use the PSN. It isn't hard to find something else to do for a day or two or whatever, same as it isn't hard to re-route for a closed street.

Rumors saying that Sony has to rebuild PSN since hackers found a way to make their PS3's development machines, bypassing purchases on PSN. Essentially all content on PSN is free.

Credit data is confirmed at risk.........damn

http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/TopStories/20110426/hackers-sony-playstation-users-data-110426/

Sony says credit card data of PlayStation users may have been stolen in an intrusion that has caused its PlayStation Network to be put out of commission for the last week.

The company shut down the network, which connects players in live game play worldwide, last Wednesday after it says account information for certain players was compromised.

It says it has hired an outside security firm to investigate what happened and has taken steps to rebuild its system to provide greater protection for personal information.

Sony Corp. says an unauthorized person obtained information including players' names, addresses, birth dates, email addresses, passwords and log-in names. The company says that although it has no evidence credit card information was taken, it says "we cannot rule out the possibility."

Statement from Sony today . . .

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011,
certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account
information was compromised in connection with an illegal and
unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this
intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a
full and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our
network infrastructure by rebuilding our system to provide you
with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill
as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly
and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident,
we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following
information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province,
zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation
Network/Qriocity password, login, password security answers, and handle/PSN
online ID. It is also possible that your profile data may have been obtained,
including purchase history and billing address (city, state/province, zip
or postal code). If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent,
the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained.
While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time,
we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card
data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution
we are advising that your credit card number (excluding security code) and
expiration date may also have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email,
telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive
information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email,
asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification
or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you
are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the
entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are
fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your
password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity
user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we
strongly recommend that you change them as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss,
we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements
and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of
this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working
around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as
possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will
continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to
protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and
secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority.
Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,

Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment

It would be pure madness if 77,000,000 people canceled their credit cards! maybe a good opportunity to invest in whatever company supplies the plastic for credit cards??? hmmm

EDIT: never mind ... looks like there are ~ 5 Billion credit cards out there in the world (1.5 B in the US alone), so 77 MM would only be ~ 1.5% .. not that big of a dent.

1) Arrêter temporairement les services PlayStation Network et les services Qriocity;

complète sur ce qu'il s'est passé;

avez transmises: nom, adresse (ville, état, code postal), pays, adresse email,
