I don't really see a strong leader in this debate much,

Iggy - in exile for a long time, then want to be PM, :getout:banhim

Steve - stop similing when answering questions :tomato, the quietest of all... okay answers, dodges some as usual

Layton - some ok answers, some really odd ones, good ideas at times, but weak of a politician to implement - NDP team is not united nationally , you need more :admin power over NDP

Ducepe - Quebec as a nation, bill 101... with all due respect, this is Canadian election, and as much as I love quebec, being a nation is a disadvantage to you. Get real :tomato

Too bad Green and Mary were out of debate... w/e

This is democracy no?

Let's see....

Ducepe: What's in it for Quebec? I'm not really sure why he was there.............
Layton: Misplaced his used-car lot somewhere........
Iggy: I loved his cheap shots at Layton! Then he goes into big-brother lecture mode, and then forgets how to speak. Ducepe had less trouble finding the right English word at times
Harper: Mr Teflon at his best! Everything slides right off.... answer to everything is "the economy"....... so +10 on defense... pulled a zero or maybe a 1 on offence....

Didn't see the debate, but something pissed me off more then anything today. It's rare that I listen to regular radio as I have my Sirius on all the time. However, I had it on today for a little bit and sure enough I must of heard 6 attack ad's over the course of an hour or so. Anyway, what really got me going was listening to Iggy talk about the F-35 JSF program and how it's a waste of money. However, it seems to be lost on many people that it was the liberals that committed Canada to the program in 2002. But not only that, other than the VTOL version, the program seems to be producing a solid aircraft. If I were the liberals I would be putting this over as one of their successes.

Iggy made this whole thing personal it seems. Nothing really about his party policies and such mostly just an attack on Harper which played right into harpers hands when he said this is what's happening in Government and why we don't have a majority government.

Mostly this whole thing is an ego trip for the four of them.

As I see it, iggys platform this election is to just say he's not Steven Harper and that why we should vote for him.

Picture him standing on the fake dock from the G8 Tourism display, then...

LOL "we gotta get this muthaf---in' defecit under muthaf---in' control, NOW MUTHAF---UHS!!"

And then a rabid giant beaver leaps out of the water and drags him under to his doom. Awesome.

It seems to be lost on many people that it was the liberals that committed Canada to the program in 2002. But not only that, other than the VTOL version, the program seems to be producing a solid aircraft.

The Liberals did no such thing. What they did was purchase the right for Canadian companies to bid on a portion of the production contract. The way Lockheed Martin has the bid process set up is that each incremental run of the aircraft is rebid amongst their subcontractors (think WalMart bullying their suppliers). So now Canadian companies have business on the first couple low-rate production runs, but the government is no where near committed to purchase any completed aircraft yet. On top of that, Lockheed reserves the right to "competitively evaluate" all their subcontractors for each additional production run, so if we do pull out of the program it is likely that Canadian businesses will suffer.

True, but there are significant differences in their taxation platforms, defence portfolios, and environmental plans. You know what I'd love to see? A Conservative minority with a Green opposition. Oh, and the Bloc obliterated from federal politics.

I was under the impression that they locked into the development of the aircraft therefore giving business and R&D to the Canadian aerospace industry. I know it wasn't for the purchase of the aircraft themselves, but in around about way it was. It doesn't make sense to be part of a development program, gain R&D and then when purchase time comes around say 'no thanks'.

I think many people agree that the purchase is needed. And , the F35 is the best option out there.

Airman Jack
04-13-2011, 09:59 AM
Oh the F-18s need to be replaced, on that we can agree :)

We're only a few hundred million into government investment into the F-35 program. Canadian industry has already recouped that and then some just on the low rate initial production runs. But we have not signed a bill for aircraft, that milesone won't arrive until 2013.

Mr H certainly is one arrogant S.O.B. for demanding a majority after:

-Since 2006, Harper has cut funding for women’s advocacy by 43 per cent, shut 12 out of 16 Status of Women offices in Canada and eliminated funding of legal voices for women and minority groups, including the National Association of Women and the Law and the Courts Challenges Program. ( http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/804414--conservatives-accused-of-culture-of-intimidation?bn=1 )

- The African nation of Malawi is one of the 10 poorest nations in the world. Before Harper, Canada was the 6th largest aid donor to Malawi and biggest supplier of school books. Harper closed the Canadian embassy in Malawi and took the country (as well as 6 other African nations) off Canada's aid priority list. All in all, Harper cut aid to Africa in half before eventually freezing all foreign aid in 2010. ( http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/banned-aid/article1160311/ )

- In 2010, Harper eliminated funding for Sisters in Spirit. An internationally praised organization leading investigations into 600 cases of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls. ( http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/project-for-slain-women-faces-end-84292267.html )

- One of Harper's top aides, Bruce Carson, had been convicted of 5 counts of fraud. Most recently he was lobbying the government to buy water filtration systems for First Nations communities. He wanted the government to buy the systems from a company where his 22 year old wife (a former escort) was working. (http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/04/05/former-aides-criminal-past-dogs-harper-on-campaign-trail/ )

-Despite consistently bragging about how Canada's economy was a global leader - Harper used the excuse of poor economic times to freeze aid to some of the world's most impoverished countries. For a claimed Christian this seems very un-Christ like. 'From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.' - Luke 12:48 ( http://www.680news.com/news/national/article/67295--sachs-slams-harper-g8-maternal-health-plan-criticizes-planned-aid-freeze?ref=topic&name=ra&title= )

-The Kelowna accord was a $5 billion breakthrough agreement to improve the quality of health and education for Canada's First Nation's Peoples. Harper canceled it in 2006, immediately after taking office. (http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/aboriginals/undoing-kelowna.html )

- In 2008, Luc Pomerleau, a biologist at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, discovered secret government plans to weaken regulations & allow corporate food producers to conduct their own safety inspections. Pomerleau leaked the news and was immediately fired. Then the listeriosis meat outbreak killed 17 Canadians. ( http://www.canada.com/topics/news/national/story.html?id=f6a4a56e-c4bc-4742-869f-ef2e5e686e2a )

- Stephen Harper weakened regulations so that more pesticide residue could be left on your fruits and vegetables. ( http://www.canada.com/topics/bodyandhealth/story.html?id=2fa3e7f8-9c83-4ea9-ad60-c13b548fe688 )

- In 2008, Linda Keen President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission reported that the aging Chalk River nuclear facility was at a risk 1000 times greater than the international average. Harper quickly fired her. ( http://www.thestar.com/article/298408 )

- At the 2010 G20 summit in Toronto, Harper spent $1.9 million building a fake lake and nearly $1 Billion on security for the 3 day event. 1,105 arrests were made - the largest mass arrest in Canadian history. Only 99 criminal charges were laid. So everyone else was arrested, you know, just 'cuz. ( http://www.thestar.com/news/article/904988--dimanno-more-needed-than-glib-answer-on-g20 )

- In 2009, Harper appointed a Minister of Science who refused to say whether he believed in evolution. Harper then cut science research funding by $138 Million (while the US invested $2.75 Billion). Since 2007 Harper has forced scientists at Environment Canada to get permission to do interviews, often screening their answers. As a result media coverage of climate change science was reduced by 80%. ( http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2009/03/17/tech-090317-gary-goodyear-evolution.html )

- Harper decorated the government lobby in parliament with photos of just himself, instead of the traditional portraits of former Prime Ministers. ( http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/story.html?id=9c6b53f6-f0a2-4eca-93bb-559023144731 )

- Stephen Harper doesn't know the difference between people from India and First Nations people. ( http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/CTVNewsAt11/20040227/harper_gaffe_040226/ )

- The census is how our government determines the state and needs of the country. Harper tried to secretly eliminate the long form census so that he could quite literally make uninformed decisions. ( http://www.thehilltimes.ca/page/view/long-form-census-07-19-2010 )

-In 2006, Harper said none of his staff would 'get rich lobbying a future Conservative government.' But then his Senior Policy Adviser Ken Boessenkool did just that. Boessenkool has lobbied Harper on behalf of pharmaceutical giant Merck Frost, law-breaking Egyptian telecom corp Globalive, oil criminal Enbridge and Taser International (right after the Taser murder of Robert Dziekanski sparked international outrage). ( http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20071214/taser_lobby_071214?hub=Toronto )

-On April 3rd, 2011 Harper had his people lurk a teenager's Facebook page and then kick her out of an event because she had posed for a photo with the Liberal leader Michael Igantieff. This should come as no surprise from Harper - he tried and failed (4 times!) to create a law that would allow the government to obtain your personal information from an internet provider - without a warrant. ( http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2010/11/01/justice-nicholson-justice-isp.html )

- In order to protect the profits of his friends in Big Oil Stephen Harper has purposely sabotaged global efforts to deal with climate change. He has been so destructive in this regard that in 2009 prominent politicians and scientists called for Canada to be removed from the Commonwealth. This mark of shame had last been used against South Africa when it was still under racist Apartheid rule. ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/nov/26/canada-criticised-over-climate-change )

- In Spring 2011, a federal court found that Harper's Conservatives broke election spending laws during the campaign which originally brought them to power in 2006. 4 Conservatives (including 2 Senators) currently face charges and possibly jail time. Recent research has shown that empirical evidence for globalization of corporate innovation is very limited and as a corollary the market for technologies is shrinking. As a world leader, it's important for America to provide systematic research grants for our scientists. I believe strongly there will always be a need for us to have a well articulated innovation policy with emphasis on human resource development. Thank you.
