View Full Version : Strange noise after installing COBB SRI
Installed new COBB SRI last night in the middle of a hail storm...fun...
anyway, after it was installed and drove the car, I have a notice a strange whirring noise briefly the moment the turbo kicks in and then it stops as you build RPM and then when you come off the gas it kicks in again as the RPM drops.
so its generally at the 2500 - 3000 rpm range.
I have no idea what it could be....any thoughts?

I think it's the turbo.

Put stock intake back on and forget about it. Sell Cobb.

turbo flutter perhaps or compressor surge? look up the sound on youtube.
Put stock intake back on and forget about it. Sell Cobb.
as the frustration grew trying to install cobb during hail storm, could not get the original intake hose off so i cut it to rass off.
going back to stock is not an option at this point....

If you don't know, take it to Jimmy and ask him to diagnose it. He has installed Cobb SRIs before.

Does it sound like a muffled version of an airplane toilet flushing? I can't picture what a "whirring noise" sounds like.

whirring wasn't the best descrption.

Great advice. Really helpful to the OP. Thanks for coming out and all that.
Keep posting up nonsense like this and I'm going to start deleting it. Consider this a formal warning as this shit is starting to get really old.

Probably completely normal. You will hear the turbo spool and some BPV noise with an SRI installed. Go on youtube and listen to some of the sound clips for comparison. Do you have a boost gauge or a Dashhawk/Cobb AP and can monitor your boost values? If so, are they reading normal and can you eliminate a boost leak?
Unfortunately do not have boost gauge.
You can def hear the turbo spool, BOV etc etc...but its just this weird sound as soon as the boost kicks in for the first time.
also, good to know there's mods encouraging useful posts.
also if you move off gradually in 1st gear and let the RPM build slowly, so that the turbo really isn't loaded and doesn't spool-up, there's no noise.

I really think what you are hearing is normal for the COBB SF and any SRI on the MS3. However, impossible to be sure without an audio file or hearing it first hand. I'd take the advice of taking it to Jimmy at Street Performance to have a look and listen, just for your peace of mind.

Maybe take a video/sound clip of the sound?

I'm new to the forum but i've heard this guy's name mentioned alot. Sounds like it really might be nothing, but is it the kind of shop that you can swing by and they'll have a quick listen, or do you generally need to book a firm appointment.
where are they located, and how late do they work?
thanks

i'll give it a try and see if actually gets picked up on the sound clip.

Once you put a SRI in you will hear the turbo spool up and will hear the stock BPV blowing off when let off the gas.

Here you go. Jimmy's contact and cell number is in the first post.

I suggest you call him and arrange a time to swing by. It should only take a few minutes if everything is normal.

From reading the link, this guy just had a kid, and it's almost 8pm now so don't want to call, even if he's still most likely working.
I'll be close by that area tomorrow around 10 30 am before I head to a meeting in Peterborough so I'll swing by and hopefully someone has 2 mins. of time to have a quick listen.

You dont make any sense...thats why the OP replace his "stock" intake bcuz he wants to put an after market intake...so now he is having trouble with it thats why he asked questions here...
The forum is great for finding answers and getting some information and knowledge about stuff...
What kind of logic telling the OP to put the stock back and sell his aftermarket intake which clearly he dont want the stock thats why he got an aftermarket one...which hes finding strange things after the installation that is why he is here to ask....makes sense...
:getout
This is one of the most up tight and anal car forums I've ever been on. What's his face has already given me my "warning". Don't see the need for you to start your period now too. Op didn't get butt hurt. Why should you?
Your comprehension level is fail.
If it didn't make the noise with the stock intake, and now it's making a noise he doesn't like, putting the stock intake back on and forgetting about it would be a viable option had it not been destroyed during its egress.

So what if this is a speed section? Something wrong?
Clearly yes this is something serious that we talk about here cuz the OP is having trouble after installations and it isnt a joke matter...thats why he asked a "serious" question to get some "serious" answers...
You don't have a clue what you're talking about is my point. The noise he's hearing is totally normal. When someone has a problem with their side flares or a squeaky glove box, we'll give you a call. Until then, let the guys with turbos help with turbo related noises.
That's normal.
i don't think so. something isn't quite right. but i'll swing by Street Performance tomorrow for an opinion. and the attempt at recording the sound failed...
thanks though.
man all the "juicy" posts got removed just as things were getting good!
everyone relax. i'll get it sorted out, and i'll let you know what the problem was, if there was in fact a problem at all.
swung by Street Performance this morning. met Jimmy. he's a cool guy.
anyways, he hopped in the car and we drove around the shop and he said it was a normal sound.
i guess its the intake just sucking like a whore. so that's good to know.

yeh it's a black gen 1.
I was in Peterborough yesterday. I would have been on Sherbrooke street around 12 heading in, and around 1 30 or so heading out. lol.

to be perfectly honest i'm still not 100% convinced.
because it does sound like something is fluttering. Anyway whenever the car goes in for service or tuning i'm sure I can put this to rest for good.

Good luck. Don't be a hypochondriac. Otherwise you'll never have any fun with the car. Sure it's a bit of a finicky motor, but I can handle quite a bit of abuse. If you were stock before the intake, you've got nothing to worry about. If the engine ever does blow, just stuff it into the nearing wall or ditch and let insurance buy you a new car. The extort your money every month. Take some back. But that's a totally different topic.

I think it's normal sound, I have a k&n Sri... If you are in richmond hill area let's compare the sound... Jimmy knows his stuff but if you want certainty I guess you have to listen to other Sri's and confirm.. In the meantime enjoy the ride!

yeh let's not even get started on insurance companies....haha
Miako: not close to Richmond Hill but thanks for the offer. Trust me have been enjoying the ride. Also not doubting Jimmy, but he was only in the car and we only went behind the shop. Couldn't really show too well, but maybe he's just that good!

He's really that good and he's heard more MS3's with intakes than we'll probably ever see MS3's in a lifetime.
Also, if you're in the area again send me a PM. I have the COBB SF installed in my MS3 and I can meet you at SP and you can come for a ride and have a listen and vice versa.

from the sounds of it he's definitely seen way too many mazdas.
I actually have a project starting up shortly at Vic Park just south of Steeles so for sure i'll take you up on that offer. thanks
