View Full Version : Rust Repair Approved by Mazda - Prochilo Brothers Auto Collision Any Experiences

Hi,
Just got a call from Ted at Avante Mazda and Mazda has approved to repair the rust on my doors, trunk lid and rear fenders.
I had the original estimate done at BMC auto collision and they seemed really nice, however they do not have the time to be able to slot me in for at least another month.
So Avante Mazda is recommending Prochilo Brothers to fix the rust.
Just wanted to hear if anyone on the forum has had any experiences.
Thanks in advance.

wow, how bad is the rust? because when i asked about the rusting, they said its only covered if its corroded right through the metal

I don't think that's correct...... the rust was pretty bad for my car though particularly in the doors and the trunk lid with major bubbling underneath the tailight.

My rear fenders are going really bad... Mine's an '05 as well but apparently the delivery date was 2004.. Any chance they will still approve that???

Mine was actually a race to get it approved because I am still within the 6 year time frame.....but you should talk to them directly. I went to Avante Mazda because thats where I usually take my car to have it serviced for oil changes and recalls.
But go the dealership and talk to the service manager.
So any reviews for Prochilo Brothers Bodyshop?

I took my 05 GT to Prochilo Brothers for estimate couple weeks ago. I was told that even after the work the rust will likely come back in about a year. The guy said the rust problem is originated from inner wheel well panel, even after fixing the out panel the rust from the inner panel will spread to the outer panel.

I believe so too... But apparently, because mine's built in 2004, the warranty does not apply anymore.. This is according to some guy in Scarboro Mazda...

Thanks guys for all the help....I am sorry to hear it for rzapata...but I believe the warranty is extended 6 years from your delivery date.
Because his vehicle was delivered at the end of 2004 the warranty has expired from what I understood.
Although what I think you should do is write a letter to Mazda, let them know that you just acquired the vehicle and found out about the warranty program just after you bought it.

Yup, that's pretty much my next step.. I'll send them a grievance letter of some sort. :)
Thanks!
Interested in your results ismail_alikhan , I dropped by avante today too and he directed me to the same shop. I was interested in going to BMC too because it looks like they were adding a seal to help prevent the rust coming back: http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?53229-Got-my-rust-repaired-but-have-some-concerns-(picture-amp-video-included)&p=763672&viewfull=1#post763672
but the service manager kept telling me they were too busy, and gave me Prochilo Brothers business card, please update this thread when you get your car back!

Sorry for being MIA.....Month end!!!!..........I haven't gotten my car back as of yet.
Mine had gotten fairly badd....some really bad bubbling in the wheel wells and the 3rd brake light area on the trunk , I was also noticing it dripping out of the black panels on the doors and onto the paint...
The guys at BMC and at Prochilo Brothers said it was pretty bad but not the worst that they have seen. They said theirs nothing really they can do and that the rust will come back because the metal is bad and is rusting from the inside. They basically fix it then apply a coating it help prevent it from coming back.
I haven't seen the car in 2 weeks so I',m anxious to see it.
I heard the same thing about BMC btw....that the guy who runs it is old school and likes to see the work done properly, but same thing that he was too busy to fit me in before my warranty expires.
BTW....Since I bought my car two years ago in Sept 2009 I have had it rust checked both years, I dont think it matters with these cars though.

How long did Prochilo Brothers say the job will take? I will be dropping of my car on Monday to get the rust fixed on rear fenders. I was told the job will take 4 days. If it going to take more thank 2 weeks I not sure if it's worth it to pay for 2 weeks of car rental and have the rust come back with in a year.

Hi All,
Just got my car back today and took some pictures. Overall they did a decent job, not overly thrilled with the work, the craftsmanship and fitting everything back together could be better. I.e. Panel gaps in between the bumper and the fender.
The other thing was they damaged the tint on my back windows when repairing the B-pillars which I'm not too happy about. You can see it in the pictures.

I would not accept that work. It looks as though they simply tried to paint over the rush, did not even sand it down. Body work is very poor.

thats exactly what they did.
the rust will be back by next year.
it was more like a temporary fix.
ismail_alikhan
05-06-2011, 10:30 AM
Yeah....I don't particularly think its a great fix, although the trunk lid looks better than the fenders do.
Also, in the fenders they have put quite a bit of grease and rust inhibitor this is why in the pictures it shows as more of a rough surface.

The bumper is not my concern, its the clearly evident mask line
ismail_alikhan
05-06-2011, 11:45 AM
Ohh its tape.....apparently Mazda requests the tape to be placed to prevent the rust from coming back. They have it on the trunk as well, it goes in between the bumper and the body and it acts as a vapour barrier.
man i dont think i would be happy with a repair job like that....are you gonna take it back or just leave it as is?
i suppose the tape and the extra rust inhibitor will help for the rust, but it just doesnt look like it was done well
Dave_The_BMXER
05-06-2011, 12:13 PM
Even if that's tape why does it just seem to be a random strip? Shouldn't it run the length of the seam in that case?
If it were me I would be raising these issues with the shop.

I've talked to the shop and I'm going back to see them (Adam) on Tuesday with regards to the rear-bumper and the damaged tint on the windows.
As well I am going to take it today to Avante Mazda and ask Ted to see if he can help.

Well make sure you voice that BEFORE they do the work. It will be a lot harder to have them fix it after the fact, and they will probably to a half assed job the second time if they do.

06-06-2011, 06:13 PM
They put the tape on mine car too when I had my wheel wells done last month. One side you can see paint smear on inside of the tape, as if though thought put the tape on before the paint is dry.
If you have rust stains on the bumper let them know ahead of time that you want them buffed off before putting bumper back.

That work looks terrible... It looks like they took some anti rust spray from Cdn Tire and then painted over with a paint brush. What's with the line between the fender and bumper that looks like a peice of tape.
You could have done a better job in your own garage.

Lol.....probably....but my time ain't free....I had it reviewed with them and Avante Mazda....
Honestly moral of story...don't go there if you have warranty work that needs to be done go to the other shop (BMC). Ohh yeah....don't forget the tint damage and paint over-spray from another car.
I was excited about Mazda doing all the work for free....but honestly just one huge hassle.....
Honestly way I figure it....Im gonna drive it for another 2 years maybe...Then just get a new one....So whatever let it come back....

I had mine done last year and there is already rust creeping back into the rear wheel well. I know they fully replaced/cut out the rust problems from the fender as well because my Dad oversaw the work being done at the dealership himself. Even with them replacing the parts the rust still came back. These cars are ridiculous.
I think this year is the last year for my warranty for the 2005... do I chance being carless for another week or so?! I just want it to be GONE.

Any chance Mazda took note of the cost of doing all these repairs and made a fix in the 2010+ model?
My car doesn't have the rust (yet) in the rear wheel well. I think it's only a matter of time. However, this is not just due to Mazda, I have seen other cars with this issue on the road. It is just more frequent with Mazda it seems.
Wake up Mazda!

I have used Prochilo Brothers through my insurance company before (Not on a mazda3), and I found their quality of work pretty good. No overspray, body panel gap perfect and paint job/blending perfect. You could not tell the vehicle was repaired at all. However, I am guessing that maybe their quality of work increases with how much money they are getting per job.

A quick look at their website shows that they are affiliates of Avante Mazda.
People who did their rust repair work can be of use? Their cars *should* have been taken to Prochilo Brothers Auto Collision...
