View Full Version : What to do...

So two weekends ago, while moving my girlfriend and her roommates into a new place, I let someone else drive my car (Literally up and down an empty street) and all was going well until he parked and raped my front passenger rim and the underside of the bumper (not visible unless you're under the car)... I know that many people wouldn't be bothered too much by the damage to the rim, but its bugging the shit out of me every time I look at the passenger side.
I have 4 options:
1. Get a set of aftermarket wheels. This would let me use the stockers as a 2nd set of summer wheels that I could use for autox when I eventually get out there or as a set of non-steel winter wheels.
2. Try to find one almost mint-condition stock wheel/4 gently used stockers (needle in a haystack, but by far more affordable).
3. Try to find a non-curbed set of RX-8 gen-1 wheels (smaller needle, larger haystack).
4. Deal with it and save the money for something else.
The other side of this whole situation is that I need new tires anyway, so it opens my wheel options up a little. The current front runner for tires that I want to try are the new Pilot Super Sports.
Anyone have any thoughts?

So is the person who caused the damage paying for a new rim?

Option 1
Just get a new set of aftermarket wheels and tires. Since you need to replace your tires anyways, just get winter tires for your current rims. Unless you change your tires/rims every season, you'll be saving money in the long run while driving with better looking rims.

I'd go with option 5...
break his fingers one at a time until new OEM rim and damage is paid for.

Hahaha, if only... Girlfriend's dad did it, doubt I'll be getting anywhere with that avenue and they do accept delivery of all of my random shipments to their place in the US and hand deliver them to me, so I can't really push the issue. I do like option 1, but I'm not sure my bank account loves the idea. $2000 to drop for wheels, tires, mounting, balancing is in my savings account, but that would completely vanish my vacation money.
Not sure what the protocol is on posting links to other forums (and I'm ashamed to say that I have surfed 247, but I'm not ruling out any sources of wheels), but I've been eyeing the Konig Backbone and Illusions from this thread (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123794718-Affordable-Wheel-Deals-!!!!!). Not sure how they would look on the car though (black).

I don't think it's a problem asking him to cover at least part of the wheel replacement. I mean he did damage your car. It is technically 100% his responsibility.
I don't think he will be as forgiving if you hurt his daughter. :chuckle
I would just try to replace the one if the funds aren't there to replace the whole set. Deal with it for the time being.

Get some light weight wheels, well worth the money.

Guess that's what you gotta do to bone his baby girl LoL (sorry)
I wouldn't chase him to pay, especially considering the car is still mechanically fit to drive.
I thought I saw a kijiji ad for 3 RX8 rims. I would buy those use the best one, keep 1 as a full time spare in the trunk, and turn the 3rd into a sick coffee table.
or - visit Nextmod for the CE28 style rims/G16 for the MSR's that they have on sale

Sorry about your rim and bumper. I would recommend going to Tirerack.com (USA) and grabbing a set of rims and tires and have them shipped to your girlfriend's dad's place. I paid around $1300USD for Enkei EKM3's and Hankook Ventus V12's. I got quoted over $900 in Canada for just the tires! Drive across the border to dad-in-law's, use his car jack or bring your own, put the new rims on your car and leave the MS3 stockers there. Next time they come your way then can bring a rim or two with them. Sell off the MS3 rims for $375-$400 on here as a powder coating project.

If it bugs you no end, option 1 then.
After market wheels as your primary then switch the stocks ones to winter wheels.

Take a pic and let us see how bad it is.
You know stuff on the car will always wear out no matter how careful you are. Unless it is ripped so bad and affect the alignment, I won't feel too bad about it. Option about using it as winter rim, think about cost on 18" winter tires, they are expensive. Make sure you are willing to pay that before you on to this option. Unless the gf's father said it right on the spot and say I will responsible for it, otherwise I don't think he will appreciate with a bill after the incident. Yes, he is the one who damaged it, but sometime it is just hard to tell some people to pay, haha.

Depending on how bad the damages are, considered getting them fixed/refinished? Since finance is a factor, would be cheaper to fix them, if possible, and saves you money.

Damages aren't as bad now that I am more used to it... Still pisses me off, but there's nothing I can do about it after the fact. I'll snap a picture after work. Does anyone know of any recommended rim repair/PC shops? I"m half tempted to fix them and get them powder coated a bit darker, but price would be key.

Quite possibly the way I'd go. I have some feelers out for a set of RX-8 wheels, but, since I may stick with these rims/tires until the end of the season, I am in no hurry to pick up a damaged set. If the right ones come out of the woodwork, I'll be all over them, but I have the luxury of being patient if I put off a wheel/tire purchase until next summer.
Sell the speed and by a shit box.
Sold a shit box and bought a speed, wouldn't think of going backwards.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to consult the bank account before I make a move in any direction, but this does make RX-8 wheels much more tempting...

Well... I vote for option 4. Just avoid walking around the passenger side.
