Hey guys - I received a notice from Mazda today and looks like they've finally stepped up and acknowledged that there may be an issue with the K04 turbo in the Gen1.
I'll spare you the details but they've increased the warranty coverage for this specific "smoking turbo" issue to 7 years / 140,000KM.
Here are the models / production dates included in the program:
2007 - 2009 CX7 produced from February 28, 2006 through July 1, 2008
2007 - 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 produced from July 13, 2006 through June 23, 2008
2006 - 2007 Mazdaspeed 6 produced from August 4, 2005 through June 26, 2007
Hopefully not a re-post.

It doesn't say anything about excluding those who had the turbo already replaced.
It even indicates that they may reimburse you for any repair costs you paid out of pocket for this problem.
No problem, I'm still going to be frequenting these forums. Ya, haven't seen you guys for a long time. I'm going to try to make it out to one of the Speed3 meets this summer.

Good to know, I have a Jan 08' car that sometimes smokes. Have an upcoming service so will hopefully able to deal with it then.

Brought my car to Avante Mazda in Richmond Hill this morning; the service guy told me to take a hike (nicely) because the car was modified. I left and drove down to Mazda of Toronto at Yonge and Steeles; they're going to take a look at it next Monday.

Oh that was your MS3 I saw earlier today. Who did you speak with in service?

I didn't get his name. He had dark skin, though. That's all I remember. Haha.

I haven't received this letter yet. Anyone able to scan and upload it? I had white smoke once but haven't seen it in months. I never really idle the car though ...I'll have to do a test.

^^^ Mine seems to come and go, curious to try it tomorrow with the warm weather. Trying to keep the camera in the car since it is hit and miss to show that it is happening. Talking it in for a service next week and we'll see what they say.

Just let it idle for 5+ minutes. It'll start puffing like a chimney :chuckle

I went to the dealer today to have my head unit replaced ($948 dollar bill! ..glad I had extended warranty) and let the car idle in the parking lot before going in. I couldn't make it smoke.

Bought my car from an autopark used car dealer, the one in brampton. The car has 76k kms, and the warranty book shows the original warranty is good until october of this year. Now considering im the second owner, does the original warrant apply to my car still?

I got the same letter. I have a May '07 build date on my '08 and so far no smoking at all and I'm at 128,000 kms. I have the extended 6 year 160k km warranty anyway so this means nothing to me haha. I did put the smoking turbo fix on my car WAY back when it first came out. Maybe this is why I still don't smoke? I think I put it in around 60-70k kms.

Got the letter too, funny enough my car was running fine but has started to act up this week. Getting turbo lag in 3rd and 4th and visible white smoke. Curious about your replacement Starscream, they are replacing with a NEW turbo right? I'll probably book mine in next week.

Went to the dealer for a normal service and told them about the intermittent white smoke at idle. Getting the vent fix in this week.

Yeppers! NEW turbo.
I had it done last week between wed-friday. Picked it up on saturday and drove it to buffalo and all that over sunday-tuesday. Car ran like a champ. I dont have any way to really verifiy if its a new turbo or a reman, but by the looks of it shes new (compressor housing, exhaust housing and all that look brand new shiny metal or solid black (not that brown the cast goes eventually on the exhaust housing). Best of all...no smoke!
I should also probably note, to get your turbo replaced you need to make sure you have receipts and all that for oil changes, buying filters/oil and all that. Even if your past the 100K warranty mark. I mean in my eyes it makes no sense as after 100K and your warranty is done there should be no obligation to keep your records, BUT alas Mazda has their modus operandi and will ask you for those. I luckily had mine.
Also smoking alone MIGHT not be enough. Part of the procedure as I understand it, is to see if theres any compressor damage (as in the compressor is touching the housing). If it is AND smoking = new turbo. If it is smoke but NOT touching the housing = new venting system.

There's a vent kit also for certain vehicles. Consists of new valve cover and updated hoses.

Thanks for all the info Starscream. Just came back from the dealer and they said they could not find anything wrong with the car to do with this problem. I experienced white smoke last week, quite a bit of it...but they said the amount they were able to get the car to produce (after idling for 30minutes) was not enough to call abnormal.
When I experienced the white smoke last week, I was also feeling (what I thought) was turbo lag, specifically around 60km/h in 3rd at about 3000rpm. Feels like the car is stuttering as it accelerates. Ideas what else this might be?

This happens to my car for the first gear or two at WOT after going too long at a low rpm. Puffs out black smoke as it stutters, then not so much when it smooths out.
what im i looking at paint some arrows please
and more pics
or maybe just drop by my place so i can see it

1st pic, shows the valve cover as new
2nd pic, look at the back corner you can see the new location for the venting. It goes right now towards the TIP rather then to the intake.
3rd pic, shows the original stock vent location on the intake blocked off
so essentially it vents now from the valvecover to the TIP. Rather then the old way valvecover to Intake (near MAF).
Hope that helps.

Well Starscream pretty much covered it. May be in your area tomorrow, I'll stop by.
did they install new TIP ?
or just drill the old one

Not sure to be honest, didn't follow it all the way down. I'll take a look next time I'm down at the car.

I got the letter a few weeks ago. I'm the second owner of my 2007 (build date Apr 07) Speed3. So far only 40k on the odometer. At how many kms does the turbo typically start to have the smoke issues? I use Pennzoil Ultra and have never had any issues.
Mr Wilson

It seems to vary, some early some later and some cars don't at all. Laxing back pressure in the exhaust seems to make it happen, if it is going to happen.
