HPS - http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/brakes.jsp?make=Hawk&model=HPS+Street+brake+pads
HP+ - http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/brakes.jsp?make=Hawk&model=HP+Plus+Race+brake+pads

I would believe that most members have the Hawk HPS. As for comparing it to OEM and other pads, its night and day.

HP+- Really an auto-cross/track pad that can be used on the street. Increased stopping power and linear feel over the HPS or OEM. Less durability and increased dusting/noise over OEM or HPS pads. The HP+ pads squeal when brakes applied.

HPS- Improvement over OEM pads. For improved street use and very occassional recreational tracking/auto-cross. No squealing when brakes applied and if bedded correctly.

Ive used all of them.

Oem: has good initial bite then braking for seems to taper off; low dust; low noise.

Hps: more linear braking with a shorter than oem braking distance; fairly low dust; low noise.

HP+: strong initial bite with strong braking power; loud; dusty; hard on rotors; not great when cold (I've never used them in the winter so I can't comment on winter performance).

did your friend do the proper bedding process? that might be the culprit

also i've heard that sometimes (especially if you dont bed your pads properly) it'll take a few hundred/thousand KMs before they settle in

NO he hasn't but they've been on for like almost a year now.

Bedding the pads with teh rotors is SO IMPORTANT. I drove it for about 200km's with steady and even applied pressure breaking. I've had my breaks for a little under a year and it has a good bite and stopping power is fantastic with no noise at all. Goodluck!
