View Full Version : Brake Rotors Have Ridges...Are my brake pads digging in?

Just looking to pick the collective group brain out there. My 2010 3 is my first vehicle, so I may be a little paranoid, and forgive my explanation, may not be very good.

On my rear rotors especially it appears the break pad assembly is digging into the rotor. There's a visually noticeable lip at the very outer edge, and the very inner edge of the rotors. Looks like the lip is just outside of the brake pad assembly. As well, the area between the lips feels rough to the touch. Brakes, brake assembly and rotors are all stock. As well, I've got a large amount of I'm assuming brake dust all over the interior of my rims, is this normal given stock brake pads?

If you need any further information, please let me know. I'm not sure if I can get a clear picture of what I'm trying to describe.

Thanks in advance!

When you come to a stop do your brakes make any noises??

that's normal, if the lip gets TOO big though that means its getting about that time to replace the rotors, or have them machined

There is a a slight noise when coming to a stop. Most noticeable in wet weather.

How "BIG" is too big? If I can visually notice it standing up staring at rotors with the wheels on, is that too big?

I see my post was moved, sorry for posting in the wrong section. Since it's an issue with my 3, that's where I stuck the original posting.

Post some pics pls. It will help people to other problems that you might have. How deep is the difference between the lips and the wear out portion? The lip is normal as the pads sits well inside the area of the rotors, my only concern is how deep this difference is. Your car is a 2010if its too deep like ~1mm deep you might have a problem with stuck pistons or your pads are too hard (squealing noise when braking).

Will take pics when I get home and post them. Would "hard" pads create a lot of brake dust? I seem to have copious amounts of that as well.

it depends, a hard pad will simply mean it will wear out the rotors easily and probably will create some noise. The best condition is a matching hardness of the pads and rotors, this will be noticeable in certain hard driving style. I went for the ceramic first but went back to semi metallic after a week to bed the brakes once in a while.

Well life happens....Sorry for delayed post, but like I started off this reply, life happens.

I ended up at the dealer for a different reason, brought up the rotors, and after looking at it, they determined it's normal wear and tear. Something to watch out to make sure it doesn't progress too much further.

So thanks to all for your answers, much appreciated!
