View Full Version : Intake Filter question....
Im interested in purchasing an SRI but I have a concern with the dirt in the engine bay. I noticed this weekend that under the hood there is alot of dirt and sand/ road grit in every crack and crevice. With the filter on the SRI not being in the box that it is in with the stock intake is there any issue with this crud actually being sucked in?
Sounds kinda dumb but I just want to be sure...

Methinks if you back up a moment you'll see the error in your thinking.

Where did the dirt in the engine bay come from?
It was in the air and was blown/carried/forced into the engine compartment.
Where does the stock airbox get its air from?
The front of the car, bringing in the exact same air that (over time) deposited the crud in the engine bay.

So no, you'll have no issues. The whole point of putting a filter on the air intake is to remove said 'crud' before it reaches the engine.

^^^what he said. Im guessing that your car is an older model since its that dirty. I.e. a 2007 model has had 4 yrs to accumulate crap in there. That is a long time to go without cleaning something. Imagine if you didn't dust your computer desk for 4 years. I bet it would look pretty dirty lol
Dirt happens, you just need to clean once in a while (then engine bay and the filter)
Its actually a 2010...I don't know why its so dirty.

Its normal for it to be this dirty. You should see all the crap under my hood. As mentioned before, the filter is there for a reason. Just clean it once in a blue moon.

It really depends on how and where you drive your car how often you'll need to clean the filter...but it is no different than cleaning the filter in your airbox. At least with the exposed filter dirt can get shooken off whereas it's trapped in normal intake systems. Also, if you're that worried...get a pre-filter (heck I recommend it anyway) as it will keep the actual filter cleaner for longer and keeps the filter from getting as wet as quickly.

Get two filters and a pre-filter. Make sure you change your filter at least twice a year (and don't forget to swap your pre-filter when you change filters). I change mine when I swap from winter tires to summer tires and vice-versa.

+1 on the pre-filter. I've gotten away with washing it twice but I think next time I will replace it. They are great for a little more protection.

Did you get it rustproofed? If so, that could be the cause too... that stuff is nasty and makes for a very very dirty car (especially if they spray it all over the engine bay like they did to my gf's car)
yeah it is krowned once a year....they dont go nuts under the hood but after you mentioned it i do believe that is the big cause of attracting everything...I guess dirt is better then rust. I had no idea about this pre-filter..i guess ill just have to decide on what brand now :P
