View Full Version : What's my speed3 worth?

Thinking of selling my 07 speed3 and buying a 2011 speed3 tech in white.
It's cosmic blue, less than 45,000km, adult owned, Mazda maintained, Mazda extended warranty till October 2012 or 160,000km, spend first 3 years of it's life on Vancouver island before I moved to Ontario last year....

What it's worth and what you'll get is two different things.Seems alot of Speed3's are coming on the market recently and not easy to sell. One person here has dropped his 07 down to $15k, rediculous!! ...But I'll take a wild guess that with your mileage and the extended warranty you could ask about $18K? Unfortunately I don't have the liquid cash at the moment or I'd pick it up for myself.

wait until the 2012's come out. Or just trade it in with the dealer.

Probably better off (like previously stated) waiting for the 2012's to come out. You're probably better off negotiating a "decent" trade in value with a dealer, you'll have some leverage with wanting to walk away with a new one. I just sold my 2008 CWP MS3 for 18,9k took me two months to even get any interest. So it can be done, you just have to find the right buyer.
If you were to post it, I'd put a 17,9 asking price or somewhere there abouts. You know the condition of your car better than anyone. Of the few that came to look at my Speed, all said the shape of the other's they looked at were questionable in regards to price at best. So, if your Speed is in "mint" condition then I think you have a fair chance of getting a decent buck for it. I think most would agree, "mint" is a term thrown around way to loosely these days in regards to the condition of a seller's car.

Unfortunately I've found this site to be fairly accurate based on selling and buying a different car for my wife this past month - here are on the numbers on a 07 MS3 with your KM - http://www.canadianblackbook.com/black-book-values/index/display/neworused/used/year/2007/make/Mazda/postalcode/L9T5S9/model/MazdaSpeed3/mode/tradein/trim/NOTRIM/style/4D+Hatchback/selectedoptions/[]/currentkilometers/45000
Looks like $12.2-$14.3 + $400 for the remaining MAP coverage would having you doing well to get $14,700-$15,000.
Not having your OEM wheels won't help from a resale perspective; multiple owners also doesn't help if you weren't the original owner
Your lucky if you get 15k.

You never go by the 'Black book' value because it is 1) A trade in value 2) Only a guide!....When deciding on a selling price best bet is to study the going price on the market i.e. Auto-trader and other sources. Go to a couple of dealers get a trade-in value then add 20% atleast as dealers will undercut the value tremendously.Certain things will keep the value up; arguably mileage is probably number one and the OP has much lower then average mileage for the year, then he is still under the OEM warranty with an extended warranty to boot.If his car is in 'mint' condition he should get top buck for his car.'Mint' is used loosly all the time but should mean the car is basically in 'new condition'; no rust, no dents, no accidents, no mechanical issues, immaculate inside and out.Otherwise it's below mint.If the OP can't get say $17k for his car I would suggest keeping it unless circumstances force him to sell.

2 suggestions to maximize your benefit..
1) Sell your car privately, as you will never get Market for your car as a trade value..
2) Come and see me when you are ready for the 2011 or 2012.. :P
Side note... the 2011s have some crazy incentives on them right now... but it might be better to wait for the 2012

Thanx all for the comments. Right now i'm leaning towards keeping the Speed3 after doing some market research on kijiji and autotrader. Although waiting for the 2012 would be nice, the incentives on the 2011 are pretty favourable and I dont see any real advantage with a 2012 over a 2011 besides resale value.
I'm really happy with my car, especially with the few mods I've done. But the opportunity to go to the Gen2, white, nav, heated seats, etc, is pretty tempting to say the least.
On a side note, I've test drove the 2011 STi twice now but just cant stomach the high financing rates, limited colour availability (at the moment), higher insurance, worst gas milage, and lack of incentives.

Good luck with that :) Ask any former MS3 owner if the MS3 actually sells for much more than blackbook. Sure it has more KM, but another 07 same colour has been listed for a month @ 15k on Kijiji - http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-2007-Mazdaspeed-3-Factory-Warranty-W0QQAdIdZ272422463 All the power to you if you can get 17k for it, i just think you're setting yourself up for disappointment and be in a situation like Blkoutspd3 where you start at 18.5, firm 17, final price drop 16, ok last price drop 15k and its still not sold.
Every time mazda offers $5k + 1k loyalty incentives on a new brand new ms3 that doesn't do a whole lot for the resale of the older models.
I believe Eliminator's car had a previous owner (lease return); so a new owner will look at being the third owner; and even though most of us like RX8 rims that isn't a benny from a resale value perspective. The car has also been mildly moded so IMO that puts you in the middle of the trade in range at $13,000. Then you add the tax benefit that he would get from trading in would be the equivalant of selling for $14,7k + one year of MAP has you netting somewhere in the 15-16k range. I think listing 18+ prices you out of the market and you lose interest and credibility dropping the price every week

In terms of mods, the car would go back to 100% stock, and I still have the original wheels...
Looking at some of the calculators on mazda.ca, a 16K trade in at the dealership would work really well with me, but that's wishful thinking. I'm scared to even ask what the dealership would value my car at.

If you can get 16k on a trade take it and run before they think different... thats the same as selling for 18k which i would think is best case scenario

Good luck with what? I guess you didn't read my previous post. I am totally aware of the issues selling a MS3 presently BUT you don't want to undersell your vehicle or get raped by a dealer if your not in a bad situation or in a hurry to sell your car.I'am also fully aware of the tax incentives on a trade-in.So still I stand by my previous comments. If I was the OP unless the dealer gives me atleast $15k or I can get $17 private, I wouldn't bother selling, that's all I meant.

Yea, 18k is probably my rock bottom price. Since it seems unlikely to get this wthout a ton of hassle and waiting months, I'm not even going to bother trying to sell. I love the car and was looking at a possible upgrade to an 2011, but I'll survive. A new mod here an there will hold my interest.
I'll reassess in a couple of years and see what's available......C'mon 2013 JDM-spec AWD Mazdaspeed6. :rolleyes

Is it me or I see Purple which is not a MS3 color....
MZ3 with MS3 wheels maybe?
OP, with such loss on the money, I would not get anther MS3....is the same engine same HP and yours is low KM.
If trade, at least i would trade with something different.....not losing $ for another generation of the same car.

Yep,
I think that with a speciality car like the Speed 3, you should try to sell privately, as the dealers will have a harder time finding interested buyers and as you'd mentioned, they will lowball the crap out of you on it.
You will have a better chance in getting good money out of it by selling privately, and find someone who understands and appreciates the condition and value of your car.
GLWS!
Cheers,
Rob.

Man the resale is getting really bad, almost makes me think of getting another USED MS3 for my winter ride...
Its such a great car IMO!
Edit...well not JUST winter ride :) Would be perfect for my new side profession as a real estate agent...2 doors is not fun for that!
Either way still shocking to me...

Given that is what my speed3's trade in value was two years ago when it had 24,000km on it and hadn't seen snow I highly doubt you have a prayer of seeing anything close to 16k on a trade in. if you can find someone dumb enough to pay 18k now i'd take the money and run since the ms3 is on an express bus to sub 10k resale values soon

If you found the right buyer and at the right time, I don't think 17k-18k is totally out of the question. No one seemed to notice I sold my 2008 MS3 for $18,900 just last week. As previously mentioned in the thread, you just have to wait it and out and hope someone that appreciates the MS3 and the possible "mint" condition of yours. Unoriginalusername is quite negative haha, although not far off from reality he raises some good points. What Mazda did to the resale value of our beloved MS3's is horid but what can ya do.
I really contemplated putting my car back to stock but didn't end up having to as many ppl all of a sudden became interested. That's always an option for you, I think if you're going to sell you should go with something other than a 2011 MS3. Like someone said, same engine with some "bells and whistles", IMO you'd get bored rather quick and may end up regretting your purchase. No harm in posting your car for sale on here and kijiji and see what happens.
I agree...there's no harm in trying and seeing what you might get.
GL!

I think you did stelar on your price, but lets do a bridge to compare the two vehicles based on the MY difference, KM and value of the mods you have vs. this car based on finding a buyer who appreciated them. I priced them at their current value on the FS board vs. new as these cost about double new + installation fees
One Model year near - $1,000 (KBB average for MY difference)
10,000 more km on your car - (-$500) based on KBB 1,000 per 20k
CPE TBE $1,000
MS CAI - $250
Springs/Camber kit - $250
Other - $50
Bridge total - $2,050
Comparable price to your $18,900 = $16,850 best case scenario price.
I think you're sale was the exception to the rule and congrats for that; by no means don't not try I am just trying to prepare you for the eventuality that 9 out of 10 MS3 owners will discover. Please do send your thank-you notes to Mazda Canada for the resale practices they've used on the MS3
2008 Crystal White Pearl Mazdaspeed 3
59,XXX km’s
M.A.P. warranty for 4yr, 100,000km
Mods:
Mazdapseed CAI
CP-E Full TBE (Catted)
Lowered on Mazdaspeed Spring/Camber Kit
TWM Short Shifter and bushings

TRZ Dogbone Poly Engine Mount
Ventpod glowshift mechanical boost gauge

I've been getting trade quotes out here in Nova Scotia recently. 2008 (.5) Mazdaspeed 3, mint shape with 40,000 kms. Black book high value looks to be about $16,000. And that's where most are sitting.
Infinity is sitting on $15,000 towards a G25. Lexus $16,000 towards an IS250. Acura, $17,400 towards a TSX. The $17,400 gives me $20,000 after tax savings which I like, and am trying to convince the wife to pull the trigger on.
I didn't really like the G25 so gave up on Infinity and Lexus has been really stuck on $16,000. Although I did really like the IS250, the $17,400 trade at Acura along with the cheaper price of a TSX packed with goodies is very tempting.

I'd prob go for the TSX. There's a 2012 special edition coming out that will have a few cosmetic interior and exterior changes. Also, be careful with those "premium" car dealers. They really do try to rack up the extras on the bill of sale.
