How do I make my car louder?

Hi,

I have a 2005 2.3L Mazda 3 and I want to make it louder.

Right now I have a Vibrant Turbo Muffler. It's not a full cat-back, just the muffler.
I've had it for almost 2 years now and it gives the look that I want but lacks the sound.

I'm looking for something inexpensive, so a cat-back or headers are out of the question.

Also, i've been thinking about getting a CAI for a while and will probably get one next time they are on sale.

Are my options a race pipe or straight pipe?
What do either of them comprise of?
I'm also aware that they are illegal and the car will not pass emissions with either of these.

would an SRI not be louder than a CAI? if it's just straight sound you're looking for, I've heard SRI's are better for that, but give minimal gains in power.

I'd suggest going straight pipe, my buddy actually does custom exhaust work and can probably get you set up for under 200 bucks. I'll see if I can get a sound clip of his G35 which he did himself

Yeah, our cars are just weenie little 4-bangers. You can make it loud but nothing you do is going to make it sound as tough as either engine in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQZOc49ezX0).

-1 on SRI. I had one with a stock exhaust...definitely no change in sound except over 4k rpm. Power gains is definitely noticeable though.

an SRI will give you pretty much the exact same gain as a CAI

funny enough, my exhaust did smell a bit strong after full exhaust, but after all the carbon was gone, its not bad. plus, the straight/racepipe i think can only replace the first cat near the header part of the exhaust.

Just to confirm b/w SMI and CAI

SRI = larger increase in HP (i know its not a massive increase but greater than that of the CAI)
not as loud
uses the warm air already in the engine bay (which is not ideal for the engine)

CAI= lesser increase in HP
louder than SRI and stock
uses colder air from the atmosphere as opposed to that of the engine bay

please correct me if I'em wrong, and add in corrections.

this is going to be my next purchase lol

also, ive been advised that K&N, AEM and Injen should be my top choices...why? why not? What about a COBB system?

coulder air = lower intake temps = increased horsepower.

a CAI would increase horsepower more than a SAI.
but, on mazda3's, its basically just noise that makes you think the car is faster.

Really SRI's give you more bottom end torque, CAI's give you more top end HP...but really as said on a mazda 3 the differences are negligible.

uh, yes, yes you will. you have oxygen sensors, and air/fuel sensors. some cars have pairs of each. if you remove a cat, your secondary oxygen sensors will get the same readings as the primary sensor, and trigger a check engine. something along the lines of "o2 sensor running lean, bank 1 or 2"
also, since the readings will be off, your car will dump for fuel into the engine, as it's not propery tuned for it.

pretty much, cause its straight and its made for racing, illegal to not have a cat on the street. race pipes or straight pipes or test pipes are 60-100$, gives you alot of high end power and sound. only your running around with no cat and in the highly unlikely possibilty that a cop pulls you over and looks underneath, ur screwed.

I believe removing the cat is a huge fine. Somewhere around $1000.

I also believe any modification to the stock exhaust is also illegal and could lead to an improper muffler fine which I think is around $150. Although adding resonators is probably ok since you're making the car quiter.

Not to mention just driving beside them on the highway or trying to eat out on a patio and they drive by. The only sounds I want to hear are lambo's, ferarri's and nissan gtr's cuz thats what Loud is supposed to sound like.
If you disagree with me please invite me over i'll borrow someones loud mazda 3 and sit there and drive it by your house all hours of the night. Or if you are trying to have a convo with someone on a patio i'll drive by and make sure it's known.

i had headers and a non-resonated catback for a while. if you're easy on the throttle, it wont be all that loud. you just need to learn how to drive it.
if you spend most of your life above 4500 rpms, you will become very obnoxious, very quickly.

some people have different tolerances for exhaust tones. hoodzy is probably one of those people who hates the sounds of loud exhausts on a car..whether it be a kit from canadian tire or a magna flow like Mazdy has. in my opinion i think my exhaust is loud but that is only if i hammer the gas..all other times it is quiet as a mouse. no need to think because someone doesn't like exhaust tones doesn't mean that they are completely against those who have changed their exhausts systems.

I’ve only been on this forum since 2007. I have never seen a douche canoe like you on this forum. We don’t care what other cars you drive. If you hate civics/mazdas so much as you did state before (stating only exotic cars or expensive ones should be loud) why the hell did you join TM3 in the first place if you’re such a fanboy of other manufactures.

TM3 is like a family of enthusiasts who have helped each other out over the years and have built up great friendships. Each member (not including yourself) have been helped by a fellow TM3er , either when they have been in a serious accident , with fixing their car or just the aid of doing of a mod or simply answering a question in a thread. Members have been nothing but supportive and there for one another and that is what makes TM3 so popular and successful as a car club. Pouring fuel of fire isn’t your solution here. Your obviously not slow in regards to seeing 4-5 people respond back to you negatively. That should be a wake up call that you posted something to piss off the community. The moderators on here have been nothing but welcoming and supportive to all members on here and have gone out of their way in their busy lives to go above and beyond a typical forum moderator’s responsibility. If you’re here to just troll so be it, but bashing a Mazda 3 in front of a community of car enthusiast is not wise. Sure most of us do drive other cars and more then likely a lot nicer then the cars you drive. Personally I do have an aftermarket exhaust and I do like the sound… but I also use my exhaust to put my kids to sleep for long drives (and yes most parents on this forum can agree with me). For some members a Mazda3, MS3 or RX8 are just stepping-stones to faster cars/other make or for the die hard they are loyal members of Mazda and have owned them for generations or for some it’s mini-van or SUV next. Please think before you speak.

I’ve only been on this forum since 2007. I have never seen a douche canoe like you on this forum. We don’t care what other cars you drive. If you hate civics/mazdas so much as you did state before (stating only exotic cars or expensive ones should be loud) why the hell did you join TM3 in the first place if you’re such a fanboy of other manufactures.

TM3 is like a family of enthusiasts who have helped each other out over the years and have built up great friendships. Each member (not including yourself) have been helped by a fellow TM3er , either when they have been in a serious accident , with fixing their car or just the aid of doing of a mod or simply answering a question in a thread. Members have been nothing but supportive and there for one another and that is what makes TM3 so popular and successful as a car club. Pouring fuel of fire isn’t your solution here. Sorry let me rephrase.. I believe that the stock sound of my car sounds better then the current aftermarket alternatives for my car specifically. Sorry for the confusion.

If money was no object? Don't kid yourself. I used to say the same thing about my modded car that I had my entire heart and soul into. Not one word of a lie; I shed tears the day I signed over that ownership. With the sound that car made, I still turn my head every time I hear something similar to see if maybe it's my baby. I know it still exists; I know it still has the custom true dual exhaust I had done to it.

lol, if you knew me in person, you would know i was telling the truth. Vlad already offered to trade his ms3 or ms6 for my car which was very kind of him to do so. But i declined. the only car I might trade for is an rx8 because its one of my favourite cars. Other than that, would not trade for anything else. call me crazy, but its just the way it is.
