You know what’s missing from today? BlackBerry news. Seems like the avalanche of yesterday somewhat faded today, but we have a small update for you. Rogers announced that they will be releasing the new flavours of BlackBerry devices: the Bold 9900, Torch 9810 and Torch 9860. These are all expected to drop sometime “this Summer” and have all their own respected various rumoured release dates. A good sign of an impending release is getting employees trained on the devices… and that’s exactly what’s happening with the Bold 9900 for Rogers staff. This is by far the flagship device out of all the new models as it’s thin, light, powered by OS 7, plus comes with a touchscreen and a QWERTY keyboard.

I have my bb supplied by my work, and every 2 years we get a new one.

My 2 year upgrade is this month, hopefully getting a torch.

This 8900 has done me well the last 2 years, if the new one they offer me is crap I may try and request to keep this one :(

That new bold looks purrty.

lol.. hmmm.. As an Android (HTC Hero, Nexus S) user, and former iPhone 3GS/BB (Peal, Curve)/Nokia (aka Symbian) user, I can truly say that BB is the worlds TRUE communication device. Email/Text integration is superb.

Android while is great, it feels bloated and sometimes when you need it to work, it doesn't. Same with iPhone.

Let's hope RIM learns from its mistakes.

The 9900 looks epic, exterior and interior wise :drool

Yeah, Im sticking with my BB! CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS! Im due for a hardware upgrade and I'm definitely getting a Torch or a Bold.
I'm currently using the 9780, and I tried to use the iPhone but zmz3 is RIGHT. BB is the best for communication (Which is what phones are for anyways -.-)

Rumours on crackberry is that the Bold will be released August 9th, I have my upgrade this month as well, i have had the Bold 9000 and 9780 and as much as the iPhone 5 is enticing I will be sticking with BB and getting the 9900 for sure

I read about an end-of-august release for the 9900 on Telus earlier... Anyway, while the handsets are a vast improvement over their predecessors, they are still behind on the times in terms of experience. I missed BB so much that i'm actually using a "frankenstiened" 9700 for work but sad to say that the new units probably won't hold a candle to even my SGS1. While time will definitely tell, an early tester model of the 9900 (stuck in the shell of a 9000, funny enough) still had significant lag issues when attempting to "multitask".

In reality, when they said that they were re-focusing back on the business world, they began digging their own grave IMO... The smarter thing to do would've been to introduce both a consumer-centric device and a more business oriented one, since they can't seem to get a hybrid right.

+1 sort of. IMO, they need the Bold, an all-touch model, and an entry-level BlackBerry.

That being said, I've built a few 9900's at work and they are VERY high quality. The most "expensive" feeling BlackBerry I've ever held/used. Real glass, Aluminum, Rubber etc.

It's just too bad it's not QNX :(

Is this refund redeemable through RIM or through the carrier?
9700 is still $100! I'd trade mine in for that.

Probably 150 tops. 9780's are selling in the 200 range now too. But anyway, trading in saves me the effort of trying to sell it. and also if i sell it now, I will have no phone to use... haha.. so @ 100 credit it's pretty good. Assuming it doesn't drop when the OS7 devices are out.

hey how much did you end up paying for the 9900 with rogers? On contract?

Bought the phone outright, so basically retail price of 549.99 + HST. Comes out to about $620 ish. Since I'm not eligible for HUP, they would factor in an "early HUP" fee. which would have made the phone cost 699 + HST. I flat out said "that's the most ridiculous thing I've heard......."

How do you like it so far?

It's a super snappy phone. I feel OS7, while better than OS6 and OS%, it's not as innovative as they marketed it to be in terms of the look. But the usability and response is much better. Touch screen coupled with trackpad is pure genius for the minute things that you have troubles clicking with a fat finger. That's my 2 sentence review. lol. The huge improvement in hardware is where it really shines i think. Web browsing is actually good now. Instead of the slow load times of the past versions. Feels REALLY solid in your hand, not like some other devices where it's like you pay for an Audi but get a Honda interior.

See above. You might as well pay outright for one.

From some research and hmwk that Ive done, Rogers hasn't come out with prices, which sucks cause Im a Rogers customer. But Bell on the other hand has released pricing info. On a renewed 3 year term, the phone is under $200.00 to buy. (not including tax).
I asked a girl that works at Rogers the other day how much she thinks the phone will be on a three year term, he response...$250.00.
That's a big gap in pricing between the most competitive companies for cellular devices and services.
Should I switch to bell to get the discounted price, that is if Rogers is charging $250.00 (3 year term)
Or stay with Rogers and b*tch and complain saying "Bell is offering cheaper"?
Any thoughts?

Anyone heard something like this yet? Seems to be all up in the air right now anyways.

Compare the service plans before you decide on switching. The hardware price variance may not be that bad afterwards.

i went to Rogers yesterday, the phone is $299 on a 3 year plan and you get a $50 mail-in rebate.

i was not eligible for the upgrade yet since i has only 1 1/2 years into my plan so therefore i would have to pay an early upgrade fee of $115 plus $299 for the phone. all together with taxes it was $499 then i would get the $50 mail-in rebate. So the new phone wouldve cost me $450, i wasnt really willing to pay that much since its pretty much the same price as buying it outright. i will have to stick to my 9700 for now...

They are selling them. Their website is just slow to update. The torch (slide) and bold are selling already. Albiet at a higher price than other providers for new activations. However, to get the lower selling price at competitors you need a minimum monthyl billing cost to your plan. otherwise it's $299ish as a new customer. Meaning if you were to say only get a BB social plan, you'd be paying 299. Rogers has not officially released their pricing but it should be similar to Bellus.

$450 is still $100+tax less than outright. Not as cheap as it should be. but still cheaper. Wait for a few months, probably during christmas, there will be mass promos.

I'm operating under the assumption people here don't know how to work retentions though and strictly speaking "official" policy.

it was a broad statement. but sometimes it can also depend on how far you are into your contract and such too.

Haha.... If they don't follow suit with the other providers. Specifically Bell and Telus, they will lose a lot of new customers to them for sure. $100 more! nuts......... I'm investigating hookups and might be able to get a few but not a lot. Or... none at all... Have to wait and see.

An alternative is to buy it from the Telus Team Store for 15% off of 599, which makes it about 575 outright, instead of 620. Then unlock it.

Not saying the information is false, but it's highly likely that it could be.

Makes me wonder how much money competitors spend to "leak" news to blogs so that they can run their smear campaigns. It's become very sickening at how these posts are so uneducated and misinformed.

And Phil, yes, it's worth the upgrade if you are using a Bold 9000. If $$$ is an object, stay with the 9700 or 9780.

+1 to FINI I was gonna post the same thing before I saw his post.

QNX Blackberries won't be able to be "rated" until their out. BGR has always done this and has a clear reputation for being RIM haters.

With that said, I am also skeptical of how first gen QNX phones will be. RIM has to strike a nice compromise between business and consumer but whether they can pull that off or not is another thing. Furthermore, these days, I find its a lot more about apps too. Take HP's Touchpad for instance. i LOVE WebOS, always did when I saw the Palm Pre. the OS on the touchPad is nice IMO, but they lack apps and developers right now.

Fini also brings up a point about battery.. Everyone wants RIM to throw in a dual core. if the phone is running quickly with a single core.. WHY GO DUAL? All the dual core will do is become a battery sucker..

Keep in mind guys, Blackberry's OS's are MUCH more streamline than that of Android or even iOS. My next phone might be an Android just because i've been with Blackberrys for a while but with that said, I love the berries and will dearly miss my push email, the simplicity of the phone, and battery life if I do decide to make the switch.

Because people forget that a phone is suppose to carry decent battery life, However, it seems that users 1) need to do 720P gaming on a cell phone once a month or so, and 3) love bragging rights.

I have said it before, and will say it once again - Android and iOS are great for multimedia, but they lack the refinment of being a true communication device. They have call quality issues, and not to mention, battery life (when you are actually using each respective phone to its power) is horrid. I recall an old Curve 8310 lasted up to 3 days with regular push email and sms. My current phone - the Nexus S, drops % by the hour. And so randomly too.

Having the latest hardware in a cell phone isn't a requirement.

Having said that, I do not mind using Android or iOS, but given the fact that there is a craze about dual-core, 4.3/5 LCD screens. The Galaxy S2 is a great device - from an Engineering point of view, but from a customer usage, what does it bring NEW to the table? other than crappy battery life and massive form factor, not to mention the un-necessary heat generated on your hands. Using this as a GPS mounted on your car windows and its sunny outside? Could seriously damage the phone in the long run.

Previous owner of (related phones to my post only) HTC Hero, BB Peal 8130, BB Curve 8310, and currently Nexus S.

+1 to this and all that Fini has mentioned. If you want a phone for communication/social purposes - get a blackberry. If you spend more time on your phone playing games or messing around with other apps than emailing/texting/on phone calls, get one of the others.

I personally prefer a bb for my communication needs, and a tablet for my app/gaming fixes

Absolutely love mine...got mine on Telus. Fastest blackberry ever. The touchscreen is great, no lag, works just like it should. I still can't believe how fast it is compared to my tour and even the older bold.

Sorry!! but for the low low price of 550 outright you can have your own!! :)

i have mine from rogers, though i dont think that it makes a difference which provider you get it from. touch screen is fantastic. all the quick scrolls and navigation are smooth. minute selections can be made with the trackpad.

alternatively, you guys can wait for the 9790 which is similar to the 9700/9780 in terms of size and form. some specs rumoured, some confirmed that it is a small step below the 9900 in terms of features. but still a solid looking phone

doesn't really, they may have slightly different software versions installed, but wouldn't be a noticeable difference performance-wise

Yeah I just picked up an Otterbox too. You don't buy one of these cases for looks. But you sure buy one if you want to keep your phone mint. Keep dust from getting in there and scratching the metal/glass and protects it whenever dropped.

yeah i kinda of drop it a lot so im better off with the otter. the only turn off is that on my bold 9700 (and any other blackberry i had) there was always a little loop under the battery case to attach a strap. this model doesnt have it. now i cant put the wrist strap :( (extra fall prevention)

Already have a problem with my blackberry. Not sure if its defect or what, but I went to switch sim cards to another phone, when I went back to my BB, I noticed once I loaded it up, it told me to insert my sim card. I was like WTF. So I checked the sim card, it was fine, I look at the pin connectors, one was pressed down.

Okay, I bought this last week, no biggie I'll just take it in and get them to either fix it or replace it.

I get to the store I got the phone from and the guy looks at the sim card. Off the bat he states its an old card. I said wtf, its a sim card. I got it last year. (2010) what is the difference that could make. So he then looks at the pin and sees that its pressed down - he tells me its damaged. I told him the pin is just pressed down. He then opens his drawer and takes out an exacto knife and tries to pull it out. After 15 seconds of trying to fix it he said I can't get it out, the pin is damaged. I told him thats not my fault. Your not a technician to start repairing my phone. I looked at the phone and the pin was damaged. I told him it wasnt like this before.

He said you have to speak to my manager. I said fine, bring him over. Then he tells me his manager is not in and that I will have to come back tomorrow to see if he will approve it. He then told me they probably won't because its physical damage.

I told him I didn't break it, it could have been a defect, you attempted to fix it so your liable.

What is your thoughts?

I called rogers when I got home and the first thing they said to me when I told them he took an exacto knife to the pin connector, they said he should have done that. They told me to wait for the manager and if he doesnt resolve the issue to take it to the district manager.

Anyone work for rogers, maybe help me out here? All because of a rude guy at rogers who attempts to fix my phone.. I just got this last week! so not fair...

i had a similar situation yesterday when i bought by torch 9810. the guy decided he should put the otter case for me. so hes got his big ass fingers digging into the screen every which way. i said let me see that. he gives it to me and the screen is white. and i said you just broke this phone. and he said no its not broken its just stuck on this screen. and i said well i dont want it. i want a brand new one and do not take it out of the box this time. and he said no this one is fine and its registered to you. and i said i am not leaving this store without a brand new phone in a box. i repeated myself for about 20 mins as he tried to persuade me to take the phone. finally i started getting really hostile and raising my voice. he immediately got out a brand new phone in a sealed box and i left as he pouted. aaaaaah. not that this helps you. but i had to share

I just called rogers again, the representative told me to get the district managers number so I told him I asked the guy and he refused to give it to me. Rogers representative on the phone with me told me he can not refuse to do that. You are a customer. He called them directly and got his Rogers employee number and gave me that and also gave me the district managers email address. He said the guy wouldnt give him his number.

What a prick.

They are going to contact the district manager, he told me to give him 24-48 hours (which is understandable) and he said for the inconvenience he is waiving this months payment for me. He also stated that the guy should have never attempted to repair my phone himself.

Thanks for the help!

I just recently left RIM & I have to say, after personally using these phones for a while, they're great phones. The latest BGR article review on the 9900 is not lying, this is the best Blackberry to-date in terms of speed and quality. I really loved it. the build quality is second to none. The phone feels so solid. I only wish the screen was longer, like the length of Torch, or Torch touch, but with a full, non retractable keyboard.

I personally have a Torch, that, thank God I did not buy myself... the phone is slow and crappy, however, the new 9810 (torch 2) is what the original torch should have been. The build quality is leaps and bounds better than the original Torch as well.

I'm going to be getting the 9900 from my internal hookups via their EPP (paid for, not free). As for future phones... well, they're pretty damn cool, that's all I can say, but how much they'll change from now to release is anyone's guess.

just picked up my bold 9900 on Friday. Absolutely love this phone! It feels very sleek, but well built. The screen quality is awesome, everything just looks upgraded from the overall picture to the feeling of the keyboard. Keys feel bigger. 9900 is def wider than the 9700 but much thinner. Also moving between apps and screens is very easy and glides nicely. I'm a big fan of the new bold :)
