View Full Version : Another reason NOT to buy a HP tablet

When your new product sales are slow, there is no coverage in the press and the price drops with a few weeks of its release, its bound to happen:

I' liked WebOS and while I understand HP's concern.. IMO its a bit soon. You don't spend tons of money developing and marketing a product to drop it in... 1.5 months. Really? 1.5 months.

Unfortunately for HP the numbers speak volumes. Best Buy is storing something like 90% of its initial order because there is no consumer demand and has refused to pay HP for what it can't sell.
yearoftherat
08-19-2011, 08:41 AM
Which is unfortunate for HP. I saw the product at BB and it looks pretty good. In hindsight if they used Android OS, sales might have been there.

Actually, reading the Globe and mail today.. I saw that HP actually wants to go a totally different direction as a company. They're trying to take a look into enterprise services and providing analytics and such and I assume therefore is going to be minimizing their precense in the consumer computing field. So it makes more sense on why a company would abandon such a large investment so quickly (1.2 billion to acquire PALM guys.).
When a company spends 1.2 Billion for the OS/Palm, and X more dollars to develop and market, if the numbers don't work... one would at lesat try to fix the problem. I was baffled they did not but now that I see they're shifting more focus onto their enterprise side.. it KIND OF makes more sense.
The Wolf
08-19-2011, 09:00 AM
I think it makes LESS sense IMO... You'd think they have already decided on the direction of their company long before they accquired PALM..

These things happen quite often in the business world.. A company acquires/merges with another company, all assets combined together and financial status reassessed... If profitable based on research, surveys and whatnot, then go forward with it. Although, business is really unpredictable so there are instances when, just like in HP's case, a product is just a heavy burden, then "strategic alternatives" are sought after. This means a lot of things, sell assets, find investors, etc.
I guess it's just not the right time for the WebOS items to be getting popularity among consumers... Not until they figure out a way to beat iOS and android.. It could be a good thing in financial terms, but think about the amount of work and research, scrapped just like that... IMO at least.. :)

Damn. I might try to track one down. Is the .pdf viewer software any good? I need a cheap eBook style reader for technical manuals and the small 6" screens don't cut it.

at $99 i don't think you'd get in trouble. i am sure they are losing a lot of money at that price point given the estimated build of materials is $306 - http://www.maximumtech.com/touchpad-costs-hp-318-materials
so you are almost helping hurt the competition by buying one :chuckle

We had a company wide employee purchase program on them last week...where we got them for about that price.. So most likely employees didn't buy them all out, as the resale value is 0.

I would have bought 2 on Saturday if the darn store had stock.. Checked everywhere, nothin... What rotten luck.. It should be good for quick browsing and stuff. As for support and stuff, well, I guess that's the risk people will be taking.. I figure since they've scrapped the whole thing there will no longer any support of some sort... Just me though....

On our way to the bike park in Barrie, we dropped by several The Source stores and all of them had sold out of these units. Sh!t hit the fan when it got posted on RFD. As of last night, that thread was close to 500 (two zeros) pages long!

If they bought them at full price they are stupid since HP said they will refund people who bought them at full price to the $99 price that they have in place now. If they bought them for 99 and are trying to sell for more that is also crazy since the ecosystem will never be vibrant

My dad managed to nab #15 of the 16 they had at Future Shop near me.
Played around with it a little so far, seems pretty decent. While I still think I'll pick up the Nexus tablet whenever it's released, the Touchpad seems like a pretty solid internet device for general browsing/YouTube/whatever.

Snagged one this morning, loving it for $99. Does it have all the support/apps an ipad has? no, so thus I still have a laptop. Is it great for surfing/facebook/youtubes/PDF reading- flawless.
And again...its $99. REALLY cant go wrong despite what anyone says.
The fact that they are working to get Android on it ASAP is just a massive massive bonus :D

RFD effect :( sigh.. missed the boat again..
RFD is a blessing and a curse I swear, I didn't even need a tablet..but now I'm so sad because I can't find one in stock anywhere. I made a mistake of opting for store pickup vs shipping it..and I did it on Friday when they still had online stock at BB :(

This is going to get funny. Once the feeding frenzy is over, all these people that bought multiple units to sell for a profit are going to realize that they might actually lose money on them. I've already seen a few situations arise where people sold them on ebay thinking that their internet orders were good. Now they're on the hook for the ebay fees and negative feedback because their orders got cancelled.
In the end, this is a tablet that nobody cared about up until last friday. The only reason people care now is because it was a good deal. I'm seeing kijiji adds for anywhere from $50 to $300 profit margins. For those prices you could buy yourself a nice second hand iPad or a really nice used Android tablet. I have an order in for one. If I get it, I get it. If I don't get it, life will go on without having a tablet. The hoarders can suck it.

Hey, if anyone gets stuck with one new in box, I'd pay the $100-$150 you paid for it. I've been casually looking for an eBook reader for technical manuals in pdf form. I don't like the small 6" readers, and I don't want to pay iPad money for a tablet.

check the forum, they said that they will send one to a household and honor the price match - so if you ordered 2+ they are going to cut your order down to 1
but only for as much stock as they can get
if you ordered too late, wont be getting it

I picked up a 32GB one on Tuesday at the FS on Vega in Mississauga... I popped in a lunch time in, asked if they had any, and the guy said they just pulled some off of the truck :) Turns out that they had exactly two units... I got the first one, another guy the second, and then there were several unhappy people asking afterward.
I also picked up the rubberized case for full price at Best Buy, figuring I'll use their price-guarantee once it drops in price, which it did. Picked up the Bluetooth keyboard and the charging stand for half price at Staples.
It's actually a pretty good unit. Was a bit sluggish, but with some patching and overclocking it runs great. Haven't found a decent ebook reader for it yet... hopefully Adobe will release Digital Editions for it. Kindle software is supported, but I don't know if I can import the ebooks I already have into it.
