Hi everyone,
I am thinking of buying a winter beater. I might want to run the VIN through CarFax. Does anyone have experience with it? How accurate is it? Does it work well for Ontario, Canada?
Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I would rely on Car Proof... over Car fax.

Any particular reason why CarProof is better than CarFax?

My understanding was CarProof had better Canadian support than CarFax.

Anyone use CarProof before? Has it been good to you?

I used it when I purchased my last car (bmw) from BMW Toronto just for reassurance on what I was purchasing, worked well for me I did not have any issues with them. For the 49.95 i`d say its a worthwhile investment, just my 2 cents

Has a more thorough history of the car because of its reporting structure. If a dealership or seller refuses a carproof and says that a car fax is good enough, walk away.

I just ordered a CarProof for a car I'm selling so I can provide it to prospective buyers. It looks pretty thorough to me.

Earlier this year my co worker was shopping around for an explorer and wanted to spend no more than 7 grand. A dealership was offering the truck and advertised that they provide a car fax. The report looked pretty clean with the exception of a minor fender bender a year ago. When the car proof was run, there was a couple of major accidents within the last 3 years including the minor fender bender. The dealer tried to brush it off saying that the repairs were most likely done at a Ford Dealership so that should be good enough.
Needless to say my co worker walked away and ended up buying a brand new car.

CarFax waits for police and reporting agencies to send information to them. They don't go actively looking for the information.
CarFax was featured on an episode of cbc market place. Let's just say it ended with CarFax asking them to leave basically.
I'm glad I caught that episode.
