Canada's Wonderland is getting a new roller coaster next year and I can't wait!
http://leviathan.canadaswonderland.com/_upload/images/ride/drop.png
Vaughan, ON (August 18, 2011) - In 2012, Canada’s Wonderland will unveil one of the biggest and tallest roller coasters in the world: Leviathan. When the Park opens in May 2012, Leviathan will dominate the Park’s landscape, taking riders to breathtaking heights and speeds never experienced before at Wonderland.
The excitement begins on Leviathan’s first lift hill as riders climb to a record breaking height of 306 feet (93.3M) followed by an exhilarating 80 degree drop. Reaching a top speed of 148 kilometers per hour, riders will experience extreme coaster thrills on 5,486 feet (1,672M) of track that includes a series of giant camelback hills reaching heights up to 180 feet (54.9M), and an astonishing overbanked hammerhead turn at 115 degrees that will cross above the Park’s front gate at 147 feet (44.8M) high.
“Leviathan will be our 16th coaster and now positions Canada’s Wonderland as one of the top three coaster destinations in the world.” said Raffi Kaprelyan, Vice President and General Manager, Canada’s Wonderland. “We will go higher, longer, and faster than ever before when we launch Leviathan in 2012. With the addition of this new coaster and our diverse collection of rides, shows and attractions, we continue to show why Canada’s Wonderland is the destination of choice for those seeking world class thrills and family entertainment."
Leviathan is designed and manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, of Monthey, Switzerland. The highly recognized industry leader in roller coaster development also constructed Behemoth, which premiered at Canada’s Wonderland in May 2008.
Construction is well underway at the park, with a completion date of May 2012. Guests who would like to experience Leviathan before the Park opens next year can visit leviathan.canadaswonderland.com to view ride renderings, specifications, construction updates, and experience a virtual ride simulation.

^ I believe that all coasters that are in the 300'+ height do not have loops due to the shear forces that would be subjected on the riders.
I don't think that the videos do any justice for the speed and this ride will have.

Put it near the end. They can make it a longer climb to slow the cars down before going inverted, and then do two loops on the way back down or something. It's entirely possible if they just spend 30 seconds thinking.
All they've really done here is take behemoth, make it taller, and stretch it out a bit.

Pretty much the same as Behemoth. Has 76 more ft/ 5 degrees more of an angle (on 1st drop), 23km/h faster, and the track is only 168 ft longer. Ride time is 18 seconds longer.
It seems to be pretty sweet tho, I wish they would put a new one with loops and rolls in rather than this

It Isn't boring when you get on this thing and feel the sheer speed. 150 km/h feels MUCH different in an open air coaster than it does in a car. Wonderland has enough rides with loops they needed some steel speedsters.
Im glad Cedar Fair (who own Cedar Point in Ohio among other parks) bought Wonderland, because they want to make our park as good as some in the states. Seriously, look up Millennium Force and tell me this ride doesnt compare to that. I've been on Millennium Force many times and believe me that first drop and first hill will make you wish you stayed home that day.
After being on some of the rides in the States, Behemoth seemed pretty tame to me but most Canadians thought it was the best ride in the world. LOL
Leviathan will be our Millennium Force. This ride will be intense.

Speed is boring if that's all it is. You can have lots of speed and loops. It just means the coaster will cost a little more and take a little more time developing and building. But in the end, it will be 10x better.

The last 2 posters get it. The best part about these types of rides isn't the first drop either, it's the first hill where you go up it at 70-80 mph and lift out of your seat with the positive vertical G forces and then sucked back into your seat as you drop again. Hands up! :)

Agreed, the height factor alone is the attraction (world's tallest). No need to over-think it and drive up the costs unnecessarily.

All fast coasters that don't have inversions have just lap restraints for a more open feeling.
Don't worry though as long as you have 2 legs you won't fly out.

I actually like my restraint pretty loose. I always flex my legs so that when they push down on the restraint it goes one click less than snug.
On Behemoth I like to sit on the front and let my body go limp as it crests the first hill. When the rest of the train clears the crest and it speeds up, I get the sensation of free falling since I'm not pushed up against the seat. Good times...

it was also foggy when i went. i couldnt even see the top of Behemoth.

however, the same day, was the first time i went on a coaster with loops, and a suspended coaster with loops.
i still prefer the old wood coasters.

Speed is boring if that's all there is. Oh a big drop at the start, whoooppeee.... /sarc
It's just a boring "up down up down" a little faster than behemoth and mine buster, the only thing different is it's got a helix near the end. But that's not enough. Add a loop, maybe two, and one more really steep drop (or two) and you've got yourself probably the perfect coaster.
Speed is only one ingredient to a good coaster.

I disagree so hard. Top gun is my least favourite ride at Wonderland. Too many loops and corkscrews et, I just don't find it exciting... Wheras the zero-gravity feeling I get from behemoth gets me every time.
It IS too bad that Leviathan is so similar to Behemoth though. Kind of makes Behemoth obsolete.

thats all that coasters in the 300+ foot range can offer at this point, the helix is a plus. its extremly easy to type on a keyboard <ya dude add like 3 loops and 4 90 degree drops, make it a suspension coaster and give it a first class section> but its alot damm harder to actually put it into something tangible. although im not a coaster expert by any means, wouldnt it be near impossible to do the things your suggesting at this stage in engineering.. if anyone feels like providing more info or insight into this topic feel freee!

It is 100% possible to do such a thing as he suggested but it will NEVER happen, and here's why. There are two types of G forces that are placed on the body, negative G's and positive G's. The positive G's are the ones that make you feel weightless and pull you out of your seat. These G forces are safe on the body as it doesn't cause any strain, but too many will cause people pain as they are held in by the restraints. Negative G forces have to be very small in a roller coaster because these are the ones that Push you into your seat. Dangerous negative G forces will happen in something like....a high speed loop or inversion. These G forces will cause an uncomfortable and even painful experience, and that's why you never see them. If you notice, most coasters that go up-side-down are actually pretty slow during the loop.
Also there is no such thing as a perfect coaster, everyone has different opinions on what type of coaster is the best. Some people, like me, love the speed that a 200-300 foot drop provides the most, and the feeling of weightlessness as you go over the first hill and subsequent bunny hills. Others love the feeling of doing a huge loop or a cobra roll and basically not knowing which way is up.
It IS too bad that Leviathan is so similar to Behemoth though. Kind of makes Behemoth obsolete.
Not really actually, as they are still different for one reason from what I can tell. Behemoth is less tall and not as fast but it does have more bunny hills and more of that stomach dropping feeling. Leviathan looks like its average speed is MUCH higher than Behemoth because it has less hills and substitutes that with a figure 8 and a helix at the end.
I already know Leviathan will be my favorite ride at Wonderland because of the speed.

Someguy - After a bit of research, you are right! Wish I could edit my post. I'm no physics major, I just played a lot of Roller Coaster Tycoon.
I do remember learning in physics that negative G's are worse on your body, so I was wrong about being able to handle the pull better than the push. In fact the negative G's which is the lift causes blood to rush to the brain and can cause damage.
Nevertheless, too many positive or negative G's can cause discomfort and a coaster is supposed to be fun.

No actually, they can do it just fine, they've done it on many other coasters. It's not like it's some sort of new engineering. They'd have to change to shoulder restraints obviously. And of course they'd have to slow the coaster down before entering the loop. You can't put one off the first drop, but once the coaster slows down to acceptable speeds you can send it into a loop. Even if they just did a corkscrew like bat flyer or whatever it's called. But they need to vary it up a bit. going over a series of hills is boring as ****, I don't care how fast you're going, it's still boring.

Going through a corkscrew at a slow speed is lame. The Bat has em but its so slow that you would fall out of the seat if you didnt have a shoulder restraint. If I am going through a corkscrew I want to be pinned to my seat...feeling those g's is where the fun is. So at the end of the day going 150km/h+ on huge drops is better any day of the week.

The company I work for, does the tree work that involves climbing at wonderland. It has been pretty neat to see the development. From inside the park the thing looks way bigger then from the highway, and its quite a bit bigger then behemoth. They first had a 300 ft crane and had to get a bigger one in to finish the highest point on the first drop.
