Hey folks!

I've been saving for a while to get this Yakima Skybox Pro 16 in black for a while now. I use the rack for other things too (bike, kayak and canoe). I didn't come across many photos of the 3 with a cargo box. these are just too handy to not have. I'll be using the box for snowboarding, camping, and wet SCUBA equipment. Also, with the GF competing in dog agility we often go away for shows on weekends with TONS of crap so this cargo box will be most useful.

I showed you mine, let's see your rack/box setup! I might be the only one on this board with a cargo box :chuckle but I know many of you have racks.

Bonus question, who's white sedan is in the last pic? spotted him at Georgian mall in Barrie.

Also, ghetto blackberry pics...too lazy for the SLR LOL

How long have you had those racks for? are the bike mounts painted white? Looks awesome!

I paid list...104$ CDN plus the tax for the fairing...bought the same time I bought the rack. Overall WITHOUT 4 locks for my rack (YET...that's my next purchase) I spent just over 500$ for the rack and 850$ for the box after taxes. I'd recommend trying to find one used, the Thule ones are more common on kijiji. There are much more affordable options for boxes if you want one new, from Yakima and Thule.

Of course we leave the fairing on...I'd only take it off if I popped the racks off (wicked easy to do with the Yakima). Saves a ton of noise. Looks great too!

Snow board rack just came in. Test fit...
Anyone else have the Thule 92725 universal flat top 6 snow board rack? The upper arm on mine doesn't really stay open. There's only about a 2 inch opening so I have to hold it up by hand while loading/unloading snow boards. Shouldn't it stay up (around 45 degree) on their own so that I can load/unload without having to worry about the arm getting in the way?

Edit: Never mind. Just saw a video review online and it appears normal.

So I started a little project today

3x 24" Stainless steel Strap Ties ($2.49/each @ Home Depot)

an old child size snowboard ($20 @ kijiji)

And about $10 worth of carriage bolts and wingnuts.

I spray painted it black mica and will be sticker bombing it.

Should be finished tomorrow.

awesome. That howling is a nuisance - but I rarely drive on the highways - so it's not as bad for me.

yeah - its a small project to keep me busy. I got as far as prepping and measuring.
But with the awesome weather these past few days - I havent really done anything since.

To top it off - I grabbed MW3 for PS3 which just takes up all my free time LOL

worse comes to worse - I'm bolting down a hand strap and letting my little girl use it as a sled LOL

the newer system uses the Podium 460 Foot Packs with a 3069 Fit Kit. You can use the LB50 or LB48 load bars, but I suggest using the new Aero bars

I have an older set-up, which was the 400XT and fit kit with the square bars

Load bars are the things that span across the roof of your car
Podium's are what hold that bar
Fit Kits are what holds everything in place (vehicle specific)

Hey question to the quys with the bike rack attachment and the hatch, does the back extend far enough that you have to be careful opening or possibly can't fully open the hatch? specifically for the 2gen hatch.

Just a bit of warning about the fairings. The contact pads that touch the car, end up scratching the paint... on the Thule at least. They do have foam, but it still end up scratching my paint after one summer.

Bike rack shouldn't interfere with the hatch door.

Gentlemen. I love your racks, and the pictures of your boxes. I am a firm believer in the theory that 90% of the people in this country (continent) that drive SUV's and pickup trucks actually need the vehicle. Hitches and roof racks suit most peoples needs I think.

Does anyone have both a roof rack AND a hitch? Do you leave the rack on permanently? I know I'm really stretching here now but does someone have all these AND still track their car regularly in the summer? How difficult is it to remove the roof rack when desired?

I just became a dad (on Dec 19th) and I find the wife, baby, dog, and stroller in the car to be a challenge. I'm wondering if a reasonably sized roof box would swallow (giggidy) a folded stroller.

How much of a hit to highway mileage do you find with the roof rack/box installed?

i run the new podium 460 and matching foot pack but with the older style square bars. I got them because i only use my rack for bikes so the versitility of the newer rounded ones means nothing to me, especially for the money. But a few friends have the rounded aero bars and they are sweet.

First off, congrats on the new born.
Alright so there is a lot here lol. Let me do, for me, my best to answer from experience.
1. I have known a few people that have done the rack and hitch. They use the rack for everyday stuff and only attach a hitch mount when going on long trips. The extra weight is what adds the gas mileage.
2. I leave my rack on permanently (summer time). I have locks from Thule and i don’t even worry. people say you have to watch the fairings being stolen but really if someone wants to dick around with my car that much and put that much effort into taking it to save, o 40 bucks for a used one then they have bigger issues. Most, if not all people who would even potentially use the fairing after taking it already have a rack and most likely have a fairing.
3. i have never tracked my car. But i can say that i can remove my rack in under 4 mins... by myself. it is easier for some to use a second hand but it can be done individually. i don’t know what others do for removal but i find it simple.
4. I’m sure it would have no problem taking a folding stroller. You should see if you can meet up with someone who has one and attempt the stunt of putting one on the rack.
5. Finally, i notice little to NO gas mileage change. I think, depending on the wind... not like that’s any different than usual and cargo, i went from an average highway mileage of 6.5-7.1. Not enough for me to get worried about that’s for sure. The main thing i noticed is without the fairing it’s noisy and i have a sunroof so it was worse. Almost all went away with the fairing though

hope i helped a little

I believe Red Raptor has both – but not sure if he daily drives with both on

Do you leave the rack on permanently?
You can – but it is easy to remove and install once its already fitted and locked (after the first install)

I know I'm really stretching here now but does someone have all these AND still track their car regularly in the summer?
Tracking relies on many factors, including weight and aerodynamics. Both of which are hindered slightly with a roof rack. Obviously, you can cruise to the track with the gear attached, and quickly remove everything before hitting any runs.

How difficult is it to remove the roof rack when desired?
As mentioned – it’s a matter of minutes. I have locks on my rack as well – it’s a matter of turning 4 keys and releasing the fit kit.

I just became a dad (on Dec 19th) and I find the wife, baby, dog, and stroller in the car to be a challenge. I'm wondering if a reasonably sized roof box would swallow (giggidy) a folded stroller.
Congrats on the new born! Depending on the size of the stroller when folded, and the size of box you get. Alternatively, you can put the stroller in the trunk/hatch and groceries, etc. in the box

How much of a hit to highway mileage do you find with the roof rack/box installed?
With a fairing, you shouldn’t notice much. IIRC – I’ve lost about 40km off a full tank. However, I installed my rack the same time I switched into winter mode.

Hope it helps

Probably - I know that Yakima, Thule and the other "generic" racks have square bars.

But a lot of the accessories that are available are "universal"

I have yakima accessories (box, bike racks) on Thule square bars. Most accessories are compatible between the round (yakima) and square (Thule) bars.
However, I don't think all accessories are compatible with Thule aero bars. I know I couldn't get the Thule aero bars with my bike racks.

Hmm.. Here's my thinking: I want something designed to fit my car but I don't want to spend a fortune. I'm thinking of going wih a first tier manufacturer for the fit kit, podiums, and bars. I'm then thinking of going with a second tier manufacturer for the cargo box (I need a fairly large one as I need to grt a good sized 3 wheel stroller in there).
There seem to be a LOT of second tier accessories available, but I just dont trust 'universal' fit kits.
Thoughts? Reasonably sound?

Let me step back a bit
There are 2 ways to getting a THULE Rack for your car. (mind you there is also other manufacturers such as Yakima, and of course OEM)

1) 400XT Aero Foot Pack / 2135 fit kit / LB50 Load bars
This is more of a Universal fit. It was designed for cars without the fixed mounting points along the rain drip edge on the roof. This option is now obsolete, and apparently, the 2135 fit kit has been discontinued (or at least, no longer being manufactured)

http://rackattackportland.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/400xt-towers.jpg?w=300&h=225

2) 460R Podium foot pack / 3069 Fit kit / LB50 Load bars or Aero bars
This is the more up-to-date version. Utilizing the fixed anchoring point within the rain gutter. (Notice there is no “strap down” piece over lapping the frame)

http://rackattackportland.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/3-podium-aero-1.jpg?w=300&h=225

Brand New – a base rack can run anywhere between $400-600 (plus accessories)

Here's what I did
I acquired a Thule roof rack from an old 2001 Toyota Solara - 400XT foot packs (older model but useable on the 3) LB50 Load Bars (useable on the 3), , 4 Thule locks (useable), Canoe carrier (useable if I had a canoe) and a few other parts that were not useable on my 3 (Short Roof adapter, and fit kit).
For it to work on my 3 - all I had to do was purchase a fit kit ($70 Brand New / $40 off kijiji), and the fairing ($100 BNIB from Nextmod)

I suggest looking for a used set off of kijiji that is selling ridiculously cheap - even better if it comes with the "Extra" accessories (even if you’re not going to use them - you can sell them) If you do go this route - SOURCE A FIT KIT FIRST. It took me 2 months to find a used 2135 fit kit to work with my set-up. Also – I found it easier and cheaper in the Spring and Fall to find base racks.

I would say that you are a little bit restricted with the accessories that you can use with the more expensive aerodynamic oval shaped bars, however, almost any cargo box will work with the aerodynamic bars. Big difference between Thule and Yakima is that Yakima has round bars, thule has square. This is one of the reasons I went with Yakima, the round bars are a little stronger, and more pleasing to the eye IMO.

Also, I will say that the Yakima Skybox is the superior cargo box, so I'd get one even if I had a Thule rack system.

So I'm thinking of using foam pipe insulation on my load bars, to help prevent my cargo from getting damaged/scratched (until I get the appropriate carriers). I got the idea from the Thule surfboard carriers.

I test fitted a spare 3/4" piece and it covers the top and sides of the load bars, leaving the underside of the bars open. I figured I would zip tie the foam tube down.

Hopefully this works - but can you guys see any reason why it wouldn't?

I should've use black zip ties

http://img.tapatalk.com/ae72deca-e0a8-fc1b.jpg

http://img.tapatalk.com/ae72deca-e0e8-c879.jpg

But it actually worked out pretty good this weekend.

http://img.tapatalk.com/ae72deca-e0da-1915.jpg

Only downfall was scratching my hand on the ends of the zip ties. Also, the rack isn't tall enough to allow mounting the boards "bindings down" which probably would've cut down on drag.

But other than that - for $2 worth of pipe insulation, and a dozen or so zip ties - it did the job well

I'm looking for a Snowboard rack..I've looking into these racks as I recently had a trip to blue and realized there isn't enough space to fit all my friends in without a rack..
I'd prefer a rack that will hold 4 boards, as I would not need any more. I do not have any parts or accessories at this point in time for a rack.

My questions;

What parts or kit do I need to buy?
and approximately how much should I expect to spend?

I appreciate any input in my search as I know most of you are experienced in buying!

There are many options available for you to choose from. Browse thru http://www.rackattack.com/ski-snowboard-racks.asp to get an idea of what you'll be spending.
You first need a base rack be it Thule, Yakima, etc. Then you purchase the snowboard kit that will allow you to transport the boards to and from the slopes.
These racks are not cheap by any means but think of it as an investment.

Congrats on becoming a new dad! I also recently became a new dad to a baby boy in Jan as well.

While the long term plan is to buy a bigger vehicle, the short term plan is to keep the 3 for the next few years.

Like you said, between the car seat, stroller, 95lb Shepperd and room for things like groceries, its a total challenge!

I have the OEM Mazda3 roof rack which is one-piece unlike the aftermarket kits like Thule and Yakima with base kit & load bars. While its easy to put on in no time, I cannot run wider load bars like others can.

I have a Thule cargo box which I have yet to test with the Bugaboo stroller. Hopefully the stroller fits and I'll need to have it on close to year round. There is definately a fuel mileage hit with the cargo box on but still cheaper than buying and driving a V6 SUV.

I recently got a Hidden Hitch installed for dual purposes. Wifey wants me to go take her bike riding this year so will get a hitch mount bike rack (looking at the Thule T2 XTR 917). The other planned use is to tow a small utility trailer (Uhaul rentals) for garden supplies, etc to our cottage.

Yup, the 3 is going to be a work horse. I'm approaching the 200,000km mark on the original engine. The car is well maintained and I don't see a reason why I can't count on it for another few years of service.

Btw: I'm having a really tough time with the rear facing car seat. When its installed, there is no leg room for the front seat. While thats fine for the wifey, its not fine when driving a dude in the passenger seat.

How many of you drive through the car wash (touchless) with the rack on?

i've gone through once (as an emergency) with the rack and fairing on. I mistakenly took the only spot under a pine tree. When I goty back - bird $h!t and pine needles everywhere.

The rack was fine - but obviously the ESSO spray jet couldnt get behind/under the fairing (But in all fairness, it doesnt get around my side mirrors or under the hatch spoiler either. I'm gonna try reversing in next time LOL)

I hate those touchless washes anyway. I prefer hand washing it myself, or even coin-ops.

My questions;

What parts or kit do I need to buy?
and approximately how much should I expect to spend?

you'll need the base rack. And the snowboard attachment to hold 4 boards
I have the Thule base rack - and it fits 3 boards easy. But without the attachment, the boards cannot be flipped over as the bindings will hit the top of your roof.

A used set-up could run anywhere between $200-500 depending on what is included and how new the model is.
For a new set-up, expect double that price range

I highly suggest getting a fairing to cut down drag and wind howl

I would say that the Yakima Skybox 16 I have would swallow up most any stroller with ease. It is the shorter, but wide box that Yakima makes. Whether you get a Thule box or Yakima box, be sure to get a wide and tall version, rather than the long narrow ones which are more or less meant to carry skiis only. This way your box becomes far more useful for all kinds of stuff. In January I went to Florida to camp, and to SCUBA dive. I fit all my camping gear, all my scuba gear and all but one suitcase of clothes (the GF brings at least 3 bags/suitcases no matter how long or short the trip is) into the skybox. It was the first road trip where the back seats were not flattened! I could easily fit 2 more adults in the back seats if required, and the trunk only had one small suitcase and one cooler in it. That made the purchase totally worth it right there.

Hi fellow Mazda3 haulers

Does anyone know if the 2135 fit kit works on the 2011 Mazda3?

I know going the fixed point route is much sleeker, but I already have a 400xt base rack from our former 2001 Protege and I prefer not to spend the extra $$ to switch the podiums. I only put the rack on when I'm using it to carry my canoe so I can happily deal with the extra wind noise as long as there is a decent paddle waiting for me. I'll post a pic of the rack along with it's canoe and strategically placed carpet once I get this figured out.

Great thread, thanks.

I don't believe the 400 w/ fit kit works on 2nd Gen.

Correction - I know the 1st Gen and 2nd Gen fit kits are not interchangeable.

Wow, thanks for the very quick reply even if it isn't good news.

Anyone know if there are any sub-$200 solutions for fixed points/ 2nd generation mazda3? If not I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get new towers and fit kit.

I checked the Thule site and they say you CAN use the 400XT and 2135 Fit kit.

I haven't personally, but I know we sold a crapton of them at CT when I worked there and never saw any get returned, says something for the quality at the very least.

Grabbed one off of kijiji for cheap and just wondering if anyone has had any issues with them.
I know the cheaper SportRack versions, people have experienced rain getting in through the zipper seams

So I put it to the test this weekend

For those wondering - the Quest bags are too long to fit our load bars. The mounts are spaced 41" apart where our cross bars are about 26".

I had to mount it sideways for it to work

Apart from the odd length (and shape) it does it's job very well.

Is there anyone still reading this thread that has a 16cu. ft. roof box by Yakima or Thule? Anyone want to run out there with a tape measure for me and measure the clearance between the back of their box and the hatch lid when raised? Alternately, measure from the rear crossbar to the lowest corner of the box if you have a sedan.

Hokay so, the 16 cu.ft. Yakima Skybox is 81" long, so I'm *hoping* that the extra 3 inches (giggidy) on the 18 cu.ft. Thule box (giggidy) won't get in the way of my ass end (giggidy) so I can end up with a bigger box! (giggidy goo!)I want to find out if the Thule Atlantis 1800 will fit and still allow me to open the hatch.

The weird thing is that the 18cu.ft. Yakima's are the same length as their 21cu.ft. offering, which is 91". They just raise the roof (woop woop?) by 2" to get the extra 3 cubes into their biggest box. But, the Thule 1800 is only 84" long whereas the 16cu.ft. Yakima (which clearly fits, from the OP) is 81".

Help?

Did you ever figure out if the 1800/18 fit without interfering with the hatch? The guides on both websites give the thumbs up for the 1600/16s for the mazda3 hatch, but not the bigger ones.

Here's the Thule one - page 320 - Ascent 1500/1600 and Atlantis 1600 are the only approved ones.
http://basilicon.ipapercms.dk/Thule/ThuleNA/ThuleBoxComparisonChart/ViewPDF.ashx

Yakima has this
http://yakima.com/download/Yakima-Hatch-Interference.pdf

I measured the distance on my '12 with thule square bars and i get 52" so it's the skybox 16 and rocketbox 15 as the largest according to them.

I did indeed! The "interference" with the Atlantis 1800 means that you have to remove the antenna. I bought one and have already used it for a couple road trips! I'll post a picture shortly.

Speaking of short, now I have to figure out how long an antenna I can squeeze under the box without using a sharkfin!

I apologize if this is a stupid question but are the roof racks removable? Like can I put it on when I need it? and leave it off when I don't? Because I don't really like the look of them on their own but I could totally use the utility of it for the summer when I go camping and the winter when I go snowboarding or skiing.

Yes

You have the racks and the attachment.
For the racks you have a set of keys to open them (oem thule kind)

For attachments ;
With special screws that has a special key to loosen them.

In case someone is still wondering, I have the Thule Ascent 1600 and it can be adjusted to be as far back as possible and won't hit the antenna or the open hatch. It's a perfect fit.
In fact I advise that you set it as far back as possible to avoid blocking the light sensor for the headlights with the front of the box.

Looks good! Now only if you had a 2010+.... :D

Guess I'll just go to rack attack and see if they have one to test fit. I Might have better luck with the Yakima as it tapers up in the back.

Excellent advice, but I personally will probably keep it forward. I've always driven with my headlights on at all times, and there's no setting for that.

More like if only I didn't have rust... I love my 1st gen, I hate the center console design of the new breed. I would be HIGHLY surprised if this would not work on the roof of a '10+. Might not even have to remove your antenna since you've got stubbies stock now right?

On a side note, I'm in Kingston and I ordered this from ORSRacksDirect.com in Vermont and had it shipped using Kinek.com to Wellesley Island Building Supply, then I drove across the border, plunked it on the roof, drove back to the border, paid $80 in tax, and was on my happy little way for a grand total of (wait for it) $735 plus $2 for the bridge to wellesley island, and maybe $5 in gas, plus an hour of my time. Call it $750 plus my time to make the numbers pretty. This thing is $900 from rackattack BEFORE TAX?!! Where the hell do distributors get off adding a $250 markup for the privilege of buying north of the border?! The warranty on a vacuum formed hunk of plastic ain't worth that much.

I can play. Full Yakima Q-Tower setup, because that's what I could find on Kijiji after I bought the car. I really wanted the bolt on towers, but this works. I have a Thule and a Yakima Viper bike rack - If I can find one on kijiji to match the other I'd sell one of mine buy I like them both for different reasons. I leave one on all the time, throw the other one on when a buddy or the wife comes along.

I used to have a truck which I sometimes miss, I use the rack for anything I can tie to it (ladders, wood, etc.) and I'm not ashamed about it lol.

My bro has a white '10 with Thule bars and a box that he keeps up there most of the time. I'll see if I can creep a pic of his car at work next week.

That's exactly what I used it for during 75% of the time. Then snowboards in winter. Then I got a GMC with factory rack - and have only used it 2x in 2 years cause most of my stuff fits inside LOL

anyone with good contacts for a rack? I have a 2014 Sport, and just bought the replacement roof strips/moulding things for 30 bucks so I can pop the caps and attach to the factory mount points... but still looking for a good rack to use. I do like the look of the areo style racks (thule/whispbar), but the cost seems so crazy expensive. anyone with some pics on a 2014?

I'm also trying to decide if I get the style that fits the width exactly (bars stop inside the mount tower things) or the type where the bars extend past a bit. cost will ultimately dictate, but aesthetics are important.

I'm likely going to need it to carry a 3rd bike around, and possibly a slim box when I camp.

thanks.

I love my Rola, They look great (aero style) and are pretty quiet and the price was cheap. The bars and the basket were cheaper than a set of just the bars from the other big names (Yakima/Thule)

check rola's site or amazon or ebay
