Hey guys. I've had my 3 for about 5 months now, and I've gotta say I'm disappointed with how the used car is holding up. Being a 2004 model I knew there would be standard parts that would break and need to be replaced, but at the same time I'm only 5 months in and looking at $1500 in repairs to keep the car running this winter. (thats almost 20% of the price of the car, 5 months after I bought it, after my mechanic gave it a brutal safety inspection that it passed with flying colours). I'm a bit frustrated to say the least, because... how do I know that it won't have even more random problems?

I want your advice, lots of you have owned multiple cars. I'm looking at 2 options at this point:

1. Dumping the money into this car and hoping it lasts me a couple years, to really get a good bang for the buck on it. (risk: the car just goes to shit, I lose money, and I hate driving a car that keeps breaking. HATE it. I dont feel right if my car doesnt feel right.)

2. Cutting my losses and trading the car in for either a:
Chev Cruze
Ford Fiesta
Mazda 3 (include the cost of a new front bumper......)
Kia Forte

These cars would be 2010-2011 models.

What do you think you guys would do in my situation? Keep in mind that I'm not a mechanic, and will be bringing my car to my mechanic every time I need something fixed.

Thanks for the help!

What is the model of your 2004 Mazda3? GS,GX,GT?
How many KMS are on your car?

It's a 7 year old car..... I would opt for a newer car if you could afford it.

If you're sticking to the list you provided above in regards to 2010-2011 models, i like either the Ford Fiesta or Kia Forte Koup.

Well... Here's a list to discuss and answer possibly :):

1) 2004 - first year of production
2) $1500 for repairs on a 5 month bought car does seem somewhat high - perhaps outline what those repairs are? maybe they are common and you are being over charged etc?
3) you bought it used - that's the gamble. Buying used is such a mixed bag, combined with first year model... you really have to be thorough with homework.
4) surprised you didn't mention any rust on your car... good thing!
5) when you say you hate how it's holding up, what are you refering to exactly?

Is it an Auto? Manual?

Had to replace the motor within 2 months of owning my '06 GT (February '10). In addition, I've replaced (not upgraded, except brakes) the tranny, the brake lines, pads and rotors, all 4 struts, both O2 sensors, a few crash sensors, tires, all motor mounts, etc. all within the first year and a half.

I've done all the work myself except for the engine swap (due to being at school) and I've still probably shelled out $5k+++ just to keep it on the road and it still needs more at the moment. Bought the car with 109k on it, now has ~177k.

They're great cars when they work - incredibly nimble and fun to drive but I got a lemon, hopefully your's isn't.

My suggestion - see if you can make most of your money back and get something new(er), otherwise, hope for the best!
