B.C. Mounties say 13 high-end luxury cars were impounded and 13 people fined after an alleged street race in Metro Vancouver on Wednesday afternoon.
At about 3:30 p.m. local time, police received several complaints of high-end cars speeding southbound along Highway 99, near White Rock, in the area of the George Massey tunnel. It is not clear how fast the cars were going.
Thirteen drivers were pulled over and their cars — worth a total of more than $2 million — were impounded.
"The vehicles that we're dealing with here were Lamborghinis, high-end Mercedes, Maseratis, Aston Martins, high-end Nissan sports cars," said RCMP Insp. Bryon Massie.
"The majority of them had personalized plates as well and were suped-up, so they're fairly distinguished and the witnesses had no problem in providing us with the descriptors that were tracked back to the vehicles."
The names of the drivers have not been released, and Massie said it's not clear where they are from.
"The drivers of the vehicles are all in around the age of 20 years old. They're all new drivers. The majority of them do not have their full drivers licence status — they're still in the 'N' new category," Massie said, referring to B.C.'s graduated licensing program, which puts restrictions on new drivers and requires them to put an 'L' or 'N' decal on their car to alert other drivers of their novice status.
The registered owner of the Lamborghini, Massie said, is only 18 years old.
Massie said it appears the group was getting together to celebrate one of their colleagues leaving the area.
The drivers have each been fined $196 and will have to pay for the cost of impounding and storing their vehicles for seven days. Police are also recommending charges of driving without due care for others.
"Speed is fairly unforgiving. Whenever you're involved in a motor vehicle accident where there's any speed at all, it's unforgiving ... Slow down, be responsible and understand that speed limits are there for a reason," Massie said.

Are they allowed to impound cars just because someone witnessed them "speeding"?

I would say the average age of someone driving an exotic over there is less then 25.

Yep, happened a few times last year too but only involved two exotics. Cops never saw a thing, they just had witness's

Wow, that's ridiculous. Only a $196 fine? They drive lambos!! Fine them out the ass! They can afford a Lambo, they can afford a $10,000 fine. And I'm sure the city could use some extra cash....

The parents are probably pretty smart if they can pull in cash like that but they are parents that failed in teaching / governing their kids.

While I'm sure they were probably being spoiled brats and probably zooming around town without due care for others, let's pause for a moment...
There have been cases before of police "cracking down" on relatively benign events before, e.g. the Mini club cruise for charity.
Wonder if it's possible it was simply a luxury car cruise, with a few petty whiny people calling in and the police trumping up the charges to make it look like a bigger deal than it actually was? They don't state the speeds the offending cars were travelling at, after all.
Food for thought.
EDIT: Just to be clear, I don't condone this kind of activity... It's just that the scant details in the article seems kind of odd to me.

There's more that's not quoted here. According to the link, it says:
Witnesses reported the cars were travelling at speeds up to 200 km/h, and on several occasions two cars would travel side by side and slow down to allow vehicles in front of them to take off in a race.
So if the witnesses are on a highway and see this behavior, and can positively identify the cars, I don't see why they can't be impounded. Specially if they were doing as stated with those speeds and behavior.
And I'm sure with that behavior, it's not a simple cruise. With the Mini's, it was planned ahead of time in a strategic position based on the speed limit of that area. This seems to be a legit case of people misbehaving if what's written in the article is true.
Wow, that's ridiculous. Only a $196 fine? They drive lambos!! Fine them out the ass! They can afford a Lambo, they can afford a $10,000 fine. And I'm sure the city could use some extra cash....
one of the dumbest statements I've read in a long time...
withought even knowing any of the details, let's just assume they were being reckless, and because they have the money, let's just fine them whatever we feel like, so some poor person driving a 1987 toyota corolla driving at 160 kph on the QEW should be fined $2 because he/she can't afford it?
as much as the idea of an 18 year old kid owning a lambo erks the sh!t out of me, good for them.
and before you get all worked up, I'm not saying you are dumb.
I'm just saying I don't think you put any thought into what you wrote.

How do witnesses know they were going over 200km? Did they pace them? If so they are being just a reckless...
Even if your doing 100 on the highway and someone passes you doing 160 or 200 can you actually tell the difference?

Loki: They were reckless and stupid. Read the whole article. In Ontario you can be fined up to $10,000 for speeding and stunt driving. These bastards should be fined to the highest amount possible. It has nothing to do with financial status. It has to do with the sheer stupidity and recklessness of their actions, and the innocent lives they endangered.
If all you're going to do is troll people's posts, keep it to yourself.
And that moron in a corolla should be fined the maximum amount too (and just because he's driving an old car doesn't mean he doesn't have money). But these ****ing tards with luxury cars should be made an example of.

Yes. there's a huge difference. Especially if you were only going 100.
Some people will actually try and catch up to the person before reporting it so they can give somewhat of an accurate speed. Not really the greatest idea, but it happens.

Let's be honest, 13 exotics in one spot is going to turn heads, and there's no ****en doubt that they were all going a measly 200clicks if there are (assumingly confirmed) reports of "improvised staging".
Oh and to the guilty owners:

Video Link After Story (I recommend the video)
With speeds reaching upwards of 200 km/hr just as the Wednesday afternoon commute was beginning, it was a street race that ended with 13 arrests.
Police impounded Ferraris, Maserati's, Lamborghinis, Audis, Mercedes and Aston Martins from a number of men who were 20 and under and some had 'New Driver' decals on the back of the vehicles. Very few drivers held a class 5 license and one car had less than 200-km on the odometer.
The 13 cars were spotted driving erratically along Highway 99 in Surrey at about 3:30 p.m., leaving the Massey Tunnel southbound, and police received several 911 calls from concerned citizens who reported vehicles weaving in and out of traffic. Surrey RCMP were able to stop six of the thirteen vehicles as they exited the freeway into Surrey. The other seven vehicles were stopped a short distance away by White Rock RCMP, according to Cpl. Holly Marks.
"These drivers seemed to be looking for attention," said Marks. "Well, they definitely got the attention of police."
It is suspected that the procession of cars totalled about $2 million.
The drivers told Global News they were on their way for something to eat. Marks said witnesses told them the vehicles had traveled at speeds up to 200 km/h and on several occasions two vehicles would travel side-by-side and slow down to allow vehicles in advance of them to take off in a race.
The cars have been impounded for seven days, and each driver will be issued with a $196 violation ticket and a charge of driving without due consideration for others.
"There was a group of them that were getting together to celebrate one of their colleagues leaving the area and I guess this is the way they decided to celebrate was to track down to Highway 99 and start doing some irresponsible driving," said RCMP Sgt Bryon Massie.
Police are asking for anyone who witnessed this event, and who have not yet spoken to police to call their local police agency and provide contact details.

Thats insane, I mean kids racing civics late friday night on deserted roads is one thing, still illegal, but this is way worse, I'd keep their cars longer than a week. At least a month or two. and lmao really a $196 charge?! they probably paid cash on the spot. They wont learn anything with this kind of punishment...

Lol, thats for sure. The MS3 can hit 200 without breaking a sweat. Hell, I topped mine out at 261 when it was modded, or so my GPS said. Though, Id never go anywhere close to that fast with other cars around. Ill endanger myself but not others.
