View Full Version : Passenger Strut Leaking - options?

Hamilton roads are horrific. Hit an absolutely brutal pothole that came out of no where. It took out the passenger strut which is now leaking.

What route should I take? The options that I'm aware of:

1) Replace just one strut w/ aftermarket or OEM parts
2) Replace both struts with Konis
3) Replace all four w/ Konis or MS Accessory
4) Coilovers

What should I do guys? I'd appreciate any advice as I just started my new job today. I'd really like to give as much attention to work at this point, but then deal with this at the same time. On top of this, I still have to fix the damage from when my car got egged a little while back.

It really depends on how much life you have left with your remaining OEM struts/shocks and how much money you are willing to spend.

I have 123k on the OEM shocks and struts right now. TBH, I think we can take out option 1 from the mix completely. I'd love to go lower during the summer, but don't know the pros/cons of coilovers much.

You could also look at an OEM type replacement, something less expensive than Koni's. KYB's ?

You could take a look at the used Konis in the classifieds section. Ask if they fit a 06. Eventually I plan on getting koni yellows myself.

Just found out that my front passenger struts are leaking as well. grrrrrr.... I was quoted $850.00 from Mazda dealer. I'm sure I can get it replaced cheaper by either buying the OEM's or through Nexmod and have Jimmy do the instal. what do you all think? please let me know your thoughts.

Unless you are lowering it or getting coilovers, I wouldn't spend too much money on the struts/shocks. You won't even feel the difference over the stock ride (non-leaking shocks of course :P). I would go with KYB or even Monroe (they are made by Teneco). Both will get you lifetime warranty whereas OEM replacement shocks won't and also see how well they worked so far :P

I went the cheap route, replaced my rear ones 2 weeks ago with Monroes, they were 25% off at Parts Source ($50/pc)...

If you read his sig hes already lowered...so coming from stock shocks/struts and replacin it with OEMs is a No-No

Good point, missed that in the pile of his mods ;) I was not recommending OEM anyway :P LOL

For lowered ride then for sure to go with KYB, Tokico or Koni...
