View Full Version : Seatbelts save lives... wear them...

So while on my way back to Montreal, along the 401 right past Cobourg (this happened yesterday at like 17:20) - there was construction. So we slow down as traffic is coming to a crawl - unfortunately, the fully loaded 18 wheeler, did not. Apparently (I don't really know wtf happened, this is just what I've been told, so it may not be accurate lol), we were going maybe 15-20 km/hr and we were struck from behind by the 18 wheeler doing about 80-90 km/hr. The rear end of the Lexus went under the front of the cab of the truck, then it popped out, making the rear end of the Lexus airborne for approx 25 METERS. My mom who was driving used her ninja like reflexes to somehow control the car in the air and avoid all the cars in front of us. Due to this, we were sent flying towards the ditch, where we landed, spun around in the grass a few times, and then rolled a bunch of times. Not a fun rollercoaster ride.
As a paramedic I've seen a bunch of serious accidents, but never been involved in something this major. The airbags did not deploy as we were rear ended, so it all came down to the seatbelts. All I can say is that, upon looking at the photos below, you wouldn't believe that we walked out this (due to my super medic skills lol).
So please wear your seatbelts... they work. I now know first hand lol!
All three of us (my mom, myself, and my husky) are alive and "okay". We are obviously bruised and cut (I'm soooo sore and can barely walk), but nothing super major. I have NO clue how my dog wasn't hurt... normally he rides in the hatch, but I had a over the range microwave, a ton of car parts and motor bits, so he actually was in the rear seats (which is the first time he has ever been there). Due to this, he lived and was in better shape that all of us! The driver of the truck, was shaken up, but was not injured (accidents happen, lets not flame anyone).
I'm just happy I was in the SUV, as things would have been really different had I been in another type of car.
At first glance not too bad lol ;P

The back end of the car is now in the middle.

There is the passenger side, where I was lol...

We were VERY far from the road... you can see the tire tracks in the grass (the collision happen like 250 feet from where the car ended up).

OH my god.... glad to hear everyone is alright... that is very scary, someone must have been watching over you guys.
Air bags didn't deploy? Seriously? I see the seatbelts held you back but did you hit the dash at all before they kicked in? You guys are very lucky.. And props to your mom for driving in the air!!! lol wow... unbelievable..

Wow that looks brutal.. thank goodness you are all ok!!
WOW that is so crazy! I am shocked to say the least... you are right, had you been in a smaller car the outcome could have been WAY different, especially if there were passengers in the back seat. These are the days that I thank GOD and feel blessed that someones watching over. Glad you are "ok" lol. Give it a while and you'll be feeling top notch again :) Cudos to your mama for the awesome driving. Time for a new car!

Glad to hear everyone (two and four-legged) came out safely. :thumbsup
As I'm sure you know as a paramedic, remember to keep a close eye on your health for the next couple days and don't hesitate to talk to your doctor.

wish you a speed recovery!

If someone upstairs is looking out, they should have just prevented the accident in the first place.
Let's not give credit when it not due. Credit should be given to the engineers who designed the Lexus and to the OP who was smart enough to wear seat belts.

Everything happens for a reason! Even the fact that the dog was in the backseat this time as opposed to every other time. Maybe buying a new car is going to lead your lives down a completely different path!!! ooooooh *twilight zone*

Im glad no one was hurt. The car looks really bad. If Ive seen that on the side of the road, Id think for sure the people inside were badly hurt.

YOOWWZZAA!! wow thats crazy, I for one feel for ya and don't EVER want to experience something like that as I'd have a real hard time explaining to the paramedics on scene how I shat myself.
would you believe i knows the guy who hit you I used to work with him at that company, real soft spoken, and nice guy. but it shows you to pay attention to what you're doing, especially when you have 80,000 Lbs behind you.

There's no hate in this thread towards anyone or any entity.
My point is that, engineers are the ones whom have made technological advances in vehicle safety. They are the ones whom should deserve credit for people surviving car crashes.
Check out the 1960s crash test video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoFisLsrBjo
then compare it to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHMN4wH9a6w
Please, don't reply this message. This thread should not turn into a debate whether or not spiritual entities exists.
I apologize to the OP for going off-topic. Hopefully, by the time the OP reads this, he will no longer be sore.

thank god the air bags didnt go off.. although they shouldnt have.. imagine what getting an air bag in the face would have felt like after getting hit from behind by an 18 wheeler... lol you do have active head-restraints or should have i think.. so that should have helped your neck a little! glad your okay!

Holy crap! Thank god your ok, their is actually a hill in that area that you can't fell much in a car but you can really fell it in a transport..
I rolled my car in Brighton once.

Luckily i had my seat belt on as well.
And my dog rides on my bench seat with a seat belt and everything on, I've heard to many horror stories about animals in the back with nothing securing them in.
Glad to read your whole family is doing ok after that, and hopefully nothing major with yourself!

Glad to hear you and your family are ok. For those that don't know, I work at a level one trauma center and I see the effects of people not having their seat belts on. Seat belts do save lives.
Jesus dude... Glad you're ok. Scary to think about what would happen if you were in a car!

Glad you and your mother will be fine! I know what it's like to be rear ended at low speed, and even that isn't too much fun. I can only imagine what that must have been like.

That's crazy! Thankfully everyone in your vehicle survived. I'm probably sure you know better than most but take it easy for awhile.

Oh. My. God.
Is my turbo okay?! (j/k j/k)
Glad to hear you're both okay and that your dog is okay too. That is absolutely terrifying. What did the truck driver have to say for not slowing down / stopping?
And a big props to your mom for her crazy awesome driving skills!

Glad you are all ok! That is a very scary situation, and as others have said, and I'm sure you are well aware of, keep an eye on how you're doing the next little while and if anything feels off, head to a doc asap.
Do you think that all the stuff in your hatch may have helped cushion the blow a bit? We should drive around with our hatches/trunks full of pillows :)

Glad to see that you all made it out alive. In the future, perhaps consider investing in a dog seat-belt system for the dog. They sell such a thing and it will help for when you need to travel on the highway with the dog.

Glad to hear your okay, and its nice to see that the dog made it out also, there are too many stories where the hairy family member doesnt make it out!! I agree that these photos should be sent to Lexus, Im sure that their engineers would like to see that theyre creation is doing what it is meant to do.
All the best for your future driving experiences.

Hey - came here from your build thread (where I don't understand the whole taking apart your entire car...but find the thread interesting).
Wanted to say I'm glad that everyone is okay - and sorry you had to go through that.
Hope you all have a full recovery soon.
