+1, always shoes off, even if they tell you that's it ok to leave them on, out of respect. I'm glad someone else brought up the hat

It's definitely a Canadian thing to take your shoes off when you go to someone's house and in your own.

And it's not a bad thing. Now I always take my shoes off. It drives me nuts when people come into my house with shoes on because who knows what they're dragging in with them.

But my Colombian inlaws don't when the come over, and before neither did my parents and they're from the Caribbean, and they're also the most respectful people I know. So I wouldn't go as far as to say it's people being disrepctful if it's not their culture.

People in the UK never take their shoes off because they're houses are so cold.

And as for Americans, you know for sure they don't. If you watch the real estate shows they always have their shoes on and trek all over the carpet and all sorts of shit. Carpet for sure it's just common sense to take your shoes off...

But again at the end of the day I always take my shoes off and when people come to my house I will ask them politely to do so, however again when my 95 year old grandmother-in-law (lol) visits from Colombia she gets to leave her's on because to ask her to take her's off would be disrepectful.

^well said and good point. Cultural differences need to be taken into account. For instance, I have a friend who just got back from Korea and she said that if you are standing in someone's way, they don't say "excuse me", they just physically move you haha

Ya I take my shoes off 99% of the time... it just feels unatural to wear shoes in a house... the first thing I do when I get home from work is kick off my shoes/boots and enjoy walkin around in my socks (i'm a sock person lol)

Spring, Summer, Fall = Barefoot (Usually because I'm wearing sandals/flip flops outside)
Winter = Socks

I grew up my whole life wearing shoes inside my house...Obviously if they're dirty I'd take them off, but if they're otherwise clean I just keep them on. Since moving in with my girlfriend like 3yrs ago I've started taking them off just because she gives me shit if I dont. if I get home before she does they stay on until she arrives though....stubborn habbit I suppose. I figure that its my house and I can do whatever the **** I want. By default they get removed when I'm at someone elses place though...if they tell me its OK to keep them on, better believe they're staying. I walk more confidently when in shoes...its kinda like doing heavy work without gloves on - you just dont feel the same. I'm always tip-toeing around in barefeet....in shoes I dont worry about anything :p

I cant stand formality and outdated traditions. I dont wear hats anymore, but used to all the time in highschool. I never did (and still dont) see ANY disrespect in wearing them inside. The only thing thats disrespectful is someone insisting (or even requesting) that I alter my appearance to conform to their narrow-minded definition of respectability.

If anyone came into my house with their shoes on, they'd be getting a real swift kick in the ass.

As for cultural variations, I can appreciate that, but as they say: "When in Rome..."

Hahaha, totally true.. Exactly what my girlfriend told me when she was in Korea... I guess it's not that common to them. I actually got a chance to see it first hand when I went there to visit her.. Apparently people over there just walk on a straight line and just bump people blocking their way. :chuckle

Back on topic, for me, shoes off all the time when inside the house and when visiting somebody else's house.. Just a sign of respect that's all. :)

For starters its television, and secondly it's an open house. They do the same thing on the Canadian real estate shows. You can't judge an entire country by what you see on a tv show. Look at Canadian tv shows & movies; they don't take their shoes off on camera either.
I've been to a -ton- of open houses (in Canada) and not once have I seen anyone take their shoes off. I started to take my shoes off once and the realtor told me to just keep them on.
Every american home I've been to (which is a lot) I've always taken off my shoes, and so have the people who live there.

Socks FTW! Feet are nasty. I hate it when people walk around in barefeet, soooo gross.

I always take my shoes off when I enter someone's home. It's just the polite and (to me the) proper thing to do. Think about winter time, why would you want to walk around in someone's home wearing heavy, clunky, warm winter boots? Why not leave your winter jacket on too? That's just uncomfortable.

The only time I tell people to leave their shoes on in my home, is during the summer time when I'm having a bbq / pool party. Because I know people are going to be going in and out of the house and I don't want the door open for long periods of time (don't want my cat getting out, or insects getting in, plus the AC is on lol).

It's an open poll. Just click results to see who it is.

Don't see that anywhere, I've already voted.
I think what you mean to say, is click on the number next to an option to see who voted for what.

No, that's not what I meant to say. All you've done is clarify how to find it for those who don't know where to look. So I'm sure people will appreciate that.

yes always, unless the person says leave them on, and even then I would still take them off out of politeness, unless I am running back in to grab something I forgot.

I live for sandals in the summer, so it's an easy slip on slip off.

In the winter I live for socks haha, my ex use to kick me out of bed if I got in with them on..

On a side note, I need some new casual/skate type shoes.

I actually want to go back on what I said.
If it's a home I'm working in, replacing a window I remove my shoes and take them to the broken window. I do the same in a temple when I do work in them.
As for people who come into my home. I have slippers for women who come in without socks and If I run out or some need to be cleaned I make them wear there shows. My place has a colder floor and my dog makes a mess so. Now I will say to get to the couch you must cross an area rug. All friends of mine take there shoes off there.

The only times I've been asked to keep my shoes on was with my caucasian friends.

Even if I have friends or people tell me to keep them on I cant. I often get the "your going to the backyard anyway"... I still take them off... walk my shoes through the house and put them back on at the back door.

I'm with the take shoes off crowd. Doesn't matter whose house it is, I will take off my shoes, even when they tell me to keep it on.

I don't know if the shoes off is a canadian thing though, because my roommate who is French Canadian (Quebecois), his family doesn't take their shoes off when they walk into my house or their own.

Then my old roommate who is pretty Canadian (But raised with a Polish background) also doesn't take his shoes off when he walks in.

I just don't get how anyone can walk on a house carpet with shoes on. I did it a few times in the past, and it feels......... weird.
