After work today, I had to jump start a colleagues car. At 1 in the morning, I really didn't want to stay out in this weather with just a hoodie and a T-shirt on. I removed the battery cover, boosted the car and while in a rush, I left the battery cover loose on the engine cover.
45 minutes later, I arrived at home, with the smell of something awful. I got out of my car, popped the hood and white smoke started coming out from under the hood. I thought, "oh crap. Is my car on fire?!"
I lifted the hood and began investigating. The burnt smell was coming from my newly installed headers. And then I saw it. My battery cover... or rather, what's left of it:

I think I lost about ten years of my life inhaling these fumes.
Moral of the story -- don't jump start anyone. They're on their own from this day forward...
------
And now there's burnt plastic caked onto my headers. Should I just drive the car till it melts away or should I physically remove it? Seeing as its probably hard as rock right now, I'm leaning towards the "letting it melt away" part.
