iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 ?

any predictions as to what they will announce today ? 1:00 Pm EST. they will have the event to launch the next gen iPhone.. all indications up to about a week ago looked like a new re-designed iPhone 5 but as of late its looking like an iPhone 4S? better yet anyone upgrading? outright buying?

Looks like your phone breaking is just in time for this release. :) If the 5 has promising features that are out of this world, it could be a good upgrade. The 4S on the other hand is more dedicated towards the Asian markets but still a definite plus if they release it here. But IMO, if the 5 is not that different from the 4, I'd go with the 4 because once the 5 comes out, all 4's will be cheaper. :) No one knows so let's wait 'til it comes out. :)

True true. I read that Apple and Adobe had some sort of "growing apart" that happened through the years. Another reason why flash will never be on the iPhone. Plus, I only needed flash because of games and stuff. :chuckle But with all the games and whatnot that they have on the app store, I don't really see anymore reason why they need to add flash.

BBC and The Globe and Mail are pretty quick about these kinds of news so it could be a good site to look at. :)

That said, I think today might be 4S. Apple has had this trend of releasing "in-between" products to stem the tide of it's hand-held competitors before pushing the bar higher the next model.

Sorry can't edit and forgot to ask which phone for 149? Honestly just wait till the 4s 5 is announced then get one of the two. No sense signing up on a 3 year contract with a 1 1/2 old iPhone 4. They should be out October 14th since apple is shooting for an international launch of it's new flagship product. Either that or buy a used 4 for 300-350 lots will go up after today. lol.

iPhone 4's at apple are still 499/599 I believe and his contract price is 149.. The most he could sell it for is maybe 250-350 . If apple releases a lower cost iPhone (4s) then the used markets will take a hit. I'm not sure that's worth all the trouble.. Better off waiting for an unlock rather than going through the hassle of selling on clist....

No, you were saying they can't do it (or at least that others were saying this). It was stated as fact, but the logic behind it didn't make sense to me. If its simply rumour, it is easily discounted - after 1.5yrs I can't imaging Apple putting out a lower density but larger display. It will either be the same size or the same pixel density. We'll see in a couple of hours.

Well faster speeds will only be noticed when browsing, and will probably depend on your wifi/3G signal strength.... games, apps, etc there are no issues with, and it's not like you're word processing or designing large exhibits or anything on your phone so essentially, it is the same phone. lol

I think this hype is mainly about IOS5 rather than the new handset.

Hmm, personally, I don't see much of a difference compared to the 4... Faster processor, better camera, better battery, better antenna.. Just beefed up a few stuff that's already on the 4.. So, I don't know..

But that Siri thing is quite cool isn't it. :)

i have no issues with speed for mine. it seems like they did change the antenna so maybe itll get better reception.

Siri looks pretty kool too. id like to see how well it actually works.

I don't really see the point of buying a new phone outright. It's a steal, however, for people who dont' mind buying used smartphones whose previous owner wanted to replace because they wanted the latest and greatest. Should buy those used iphones and sell them to people in developing countries where they are a high commodity.

Hmmmm. $733/$846/$959 (inc taxes) respectively vs $225/$338/$451 (inc taxes) with my contract that I will have to pay for anyway....Screw the unlocked phone. I'll take my $500 savings and put it towards my next 2 iPhones lol.

i just did a restore fro Icloud (5gb free) and its awesome, worked great, took about 10 mins to do restore and then it starts downloading all your apps. love this feature as i did a restore from my computer last night that i know i did a backup of and for some reason, it used Sundays backup and last nights backup wasn't there.

ok maybe thinking that prices would drop immediately in the used phone re-sale market ( kijiji, ebay, craigslist..) was a little antsy.. but sure enough I would say a good 30 to 40% drop in the prices being thrown around now. so im doing the resale 4 for now and then upgrading come next June or whenever the 5 comes out.

for $250 I wouldnt get the iP4s, for iOS5 which will be coming out soon and a better camera (not worth it to me) which is irrelevant bc the camera on the iP4 is amazing as it is doesnt justify spending another $250 for the 4s...maybe for the 5, with a redesigned body maybe some other features then yea $250 is worth it...

so IMHO not worth it, iOS5 will be free so your paying $250 for a camera, and no the A5 chip wouldnt win me over, the iP4 is damn fast (experience from my brothers) and again they will either have the same chip in the 5 or a better one, so I would wait...

I'd be in the same boat as you if I had a 3G and would go for the 4S. But since I already own a 4G and running iOs5, I have no desire to upgrade to the 4S. Lol I actually had a 4 but it was stolen, yes it was stolen and by the time i noticed it was stolen they had turned it all off and i couldnt even mobile.me find my iPhone and after much sulking and painful nights i regressed back to my 3g.

Camera is already incredible, I wouldnt spend $500 on a phone just for a camera...I'd but a digital camera...the A5, sure its faster, but I need it proven to my eyes that is TWICE as fast...then I will believe it.

And as far as Siri, I was unaware of that being exclusive to 4s...I have yet to read that. BUT obviously you wouldnt post it here if you were trying to bullshit me.

Basically Siri is the only thing that has convinced me to get the 4s, when my cousin gets his next week I will post some videos about it, including and side by side web page upload.

Siri is exclusive to 4s since its A5 dependent, actually blogs are asking why it not coming out for the iPad2 since it has an A5 also. I have read that a couple guys from the jb community are looking into porting it to the 4 but its early stages and you would still need to jB your phone to use in on a 4. dont expect a new redesigned iPhone till 3rd quarter next year since the new 23nm LTE dual chip wont ship till then since they are having production issues going from 4xnm to 23nm. Besides apple will never go thicker but thinner and atm the hardware isnt ready for a thinner phone yet. A6 also is coming out first quarter on an iPad 3 which most likely will be powering the new iPhone 5 but probably called iPhone 6 or something else since the 4s is 5th generation and apple probably wont want to confuse people by calling the 6 gen an iPhone 5. (so i heard) .. if you need an upgrade buy a used 4 on clist, you should be able to find one for 300.. I will only upgrade if Rogers allows early HUP, if not probably going to wait for the nexus PRIME which is rumored to be a killer phone.. Killer... PM if you have any questions as it seems people on this forum attack you for trying to help others who might not follow tech news..

There is a 40 dollar refundable deposit needed to hold a device for launch date. Depending on what time you reserved you will get a number and your order will be filled according to availability . This service is for those people who don't want or cant wait in line launch day for an iPhone 4s. I do not work for Rogers just sharing info..

I'm pretty sure that is overall. They will ship your order to the store of your choice. I highly doubt that many know about the reservation system and that's why the numbers are currently so low.

Hey guys hate to tell you this but demand for the 4s is so high international launch dates have been pushed back 1-2 weeks from OCT 14th. The u.s will still get most orders filled by 14 but we have to wait. Not sure what quantity of reservations will get filled..

Afaik, you can only get unlocked ones thru the Apple store. FS/BB sells only phones for the major providers and therefor are locked.

So the rep says to me.. and I swear this on my daughte's life who is the most precious thing in the world to me ( im only stating this cause I want you all to know that im not making this up or trying to start some rumours, or beef up the thread) " listen i gotta be honest with you and i have been telling everyone the same thing.. the Iphone 5 WILL be coming out in 2 months for the holliday season..we were all thrown a loop with the 4S? we had been told to prepare the release of the 5 for this month and then they tell us on the 2nd of Oct, they are delayed but will release something and the 4s comes out" they got the pricing today and that is it. no real other info to tell us as they dont have any specs even officially there. basically she said.. well actually the redesign itself with a thinner body and a 4" screen would do it for me, not to mention an LTE ready phone?. you can say we all just notice a different name but as we know there is no external difference to the phone and people do generally speaking like those kinds of aesthetic changes. Hence the fact that most of the press has been about the underwhelming feel of having a clearly better phone in all aspects of performance , and of course the addition of SIRI but no external difference. in short.. people want to flash their phone and show em off and if any of you say thats not true you better be prepared to show me a pic of your ride today with not 1 single modificaton to your exterior styling or appearance.

I really can't see this happening, why would they piss off all the people who just pre ordered the 4s just to make early adopters happy. The general public will be happy with the 4s because its apple and they know how to build good phones. Remember Apple's iphone has always been about the iOS ease of use and quality rather than pure hardware specs. I mean there is still the matter of those cases in china that pointed to a new design, but I highly doubt it. I have not read one single blog that has mentioned this.. Apples own business model is quality and customer satisfaction, what kind of (i)message would that send to people if they released the 4s and a month later an upgraded 5. Again no one knows for sure but apple.. Here's another point if the demand is so high for the 4s and production will probably have a hard time keeping up how in the world could they add another new model to their production line and still keep up with demand for the 4s? its an international release....

Apple didn't say anything about what was coming. The media, and people like you (no offense) have hyped everything up to expect a complete redesign with tons and tons of changes. Apple hase done speed bumps to their PC line for years and no one else has complained as much as this release. To be honest I'm getting tired of it.

There is no way they will launch a 5 until next summer. If they do, it wouldn't be in their best interest business wise.

LTE isn't completely ready yet so I assume Apple wants to come in to the market with it when they know there aren't any issues with the service.

Honestly he's right most people just want an iPhone and could care less whats inside, Apples marketing is one of the best in the business and so good there is major news coverage on release dates. Its the early adopters that want the high end specs but that's mainly because android is pushing the limits on what a smartphone should be, I respect that since competition is good for us consumers but ultimately does the average user need a top of the line smartphone? Look apple didn't release a higher spec LTE iPhone because a: form factor would suffer b: LTE is new and with the cost of data not worth the upgrade, also limited availability of LTE. Besides if they are right about increasing 3G speeds on the 4s to 14.4 mbs down then that's near close to what LTE is getting anyways without the added data cost lol.. This 4s is a fair upgrade , iOS 5 is a major upgrade and should make most 4 users happy till 5 comes out next year...

Apples own business model is quality and customer satisfaction, what kind of (i)message would that send to people if they released the 4s and a month later an upgraded 5. Again no one knows for sure but apple.. Here's another point if the demand is so high for the 4s and production will probably have a hard time keeping up how in the world could they add another new model to their production line and still keep up with demand for the 4s? its an international release....

I dont argue with the stupidity or the simple slap in the face that would feel like to those of us that upgrade? but at the same time what interest would rogers have in NOT locking up some of us to an additional 3 year contract? ( not all of us are outright buying it ). The otrageousness of that scenario pisses me off, and your right I cant imagine that they would do that from a customer service and satisfaction aspect, but hey who knows... ?

I have a shot 3GS and hoping to get my hands on a 4S tomorrow. I think that the 4S will be the device to get because 1) Its basically a perfect device. Screen CANNOT get any better, processor speed-up is basically unnecessary if you dont use your phone to play infinity blade 24-7, and 8MP camera is loss-less up to printing an 8x10. I personally like the iphone 4 design, not looking to go any further. I really dont see the point in waiting for an iphone 5, especially considering the S-models have over the course of history had better track records due to more perfected hardware/software already implemented and tested and waiting for the device. EVERYONE seems to be complaining that the 4S is the same as the 4, where the only thing that's the same is the outside plastic/glass cover. For once apple has put faith into not distracting people with shiny new hardware, and i feel like everyone hates it. Tsk Tsk. /endrant

With the latest issues with BB this week, it makes moving over so much easier. Our work plan allows for yearly upgrades at a significantly reduced price and that is covered by my company so why not. I was given a iphone 4 this summer for a shoot but for another carrier. Just ended up selling it and waited for what apple was going to come out with. This is definitely a step up from my BB.

basically you will get an email with a tracking number and the phone gets shipped to the store you chose. Once there I "assume" you will get another email but maybe not. Either way, you have to go pick it up at the store that I picked which is a 5 min walk down the street. :)

I will probably get it next week, if not hopefully by the end of Oct.

Picked mine up this morning. 2nd in line, thanks to my wife getting there at 6:45am :D

Siri is pretty cool, although limited in Canada. It won't do anything with maps in Canada (No directions, no restaurant lookups,... not sure what else.). But it does work for most of the important stuff (txt, email, calling, etc). You can even program it to come on automatically when you put your phone to your ear, so you don't need to press a button to talk to it... (Only when it's already engaged tho)

For screen protection , I recommend the Power Support ones. I've tried the invisi- shield and didn't like.

Look into iSkin, their old 3G stuff came with a case / skin / protector and holster w/ belt clip, for a pretty good price. I'm sure they made new stuff for the 4/4S

Its ok but imho not great:
doesn't offer full protection on the sides of the phone like the iSkin. Tops and bottoms are more exposed. Buttons on the side are not protected also.
not a fan of the stand on the back of the case. More things to break/go wrong.
