I watched the fight. He just didn't have anything left in the tank in the 3rd round and got beat up bad. I think he's only 32 but no cardio. He should stay retired if he doesn't improve and train his cardio more.

+1 BJ Penn was never into training hard. I remember watching (I think it was on spike) the training of both Penn & GSP leading up to their fight. While GSP trained hard, Penn was out screwing about. He had so much talent that he got away with it. Even though 32 is not old it's on the " just about to enter the twilight stage of your career" when it comes MMA. To keep up with the younger guys, you gotta train a lot harder.

yeah, BJ really is one of the best naturally gifted fighters on the planet, and for a long long time , as Boyracer stated, all he needed was that talent to get him through the far less technical fighters..unfortunately he did never take his cardio too seriously and in the end you have to compete with guys that are technically improving and can run marathons, like Diaz.

things are starting to change in MMA, a time where GSP was the exception to the rule, where everyone came in and had a base where they came from ( bjj, wrestling, boxing.. etc.. ) now you are starting to get fighters that are good at EVERYTHING, cause they begin their training in MMA not in one discipline or another. Look at Rory McDonald, i have no doubt that once GSP vacates the title, this will be next person to dominate the division.
