hey guys, I'm new on here. Just bought an 08 mazda 3 gt. i have factory HID (xenon) bulbs....the passenger side headlight doesn't work all the time (cuts in and out)...i unplugged the connector looking for corrosion or anything like that....no luck. i also smelled a wierd smell coming out of it. there are no loose connections. balast problem? if so, is there a way i can use an aftermarket hid kit with balasts to bypass the stock ones? thank you in advance!

Yes you could.

I'd recommend speaking to a sponsor on a forums here for help with an affordable solution.

Why would you want to bypass the stock ones for the cheap aftermarket ones? Even those aren't reliable, I've been through 2 kits now in less than 2 years.

I'd take it back to your dealership first and get someone to figure out what the problem is.

With a 2008, the ballasts would be out of warranty, wouldn't they? And the dealership would probably charge him standard shop rates to look at the problem ($$$) then quote him $300 or whatever the obscene rate is for OEM ballasts.

- or -

If he can successfully confirm by himself the ballast is the problem, he can spend his money on a brand-new pair of standalone Philips/Hella ballasts and get two new ballasts for the price of one. Or for that matter he could get a slightly cheaper good-quality set (Morimoto, for instance) and have some change left, or if he doesnt have a couple hundred dollars free right now he could go for a cheap HID kit to get by for now, and replace them again next year.
