Hi
Just a general question about my cell phone .. I'm with rogers and pay quite a bit for my cell phone plan .. Does it make sense to switch over to ie: Fido and eat the $100 penalty to switch over .. Their rates are cheaper .. Will the coverage be the same ?
Thanks
fido is rogers so is chatr wirless

You can often renegotiate your plan to make it reflective of the other carrier you're interested in, in most cases without penalty.

If you are sticking to cities, particularly in central Canada, all carries have about the same coverage. As you move to Western Canada, and particularly in Eastern Canada, Rogers coverage is much weaker than Bell or TELUS. Most new entrants actually use Rogers network, so switching to one of them would be about the same in terms of coverage.
Also, if you plan on going outside of a city, Rogers coverage is, generally, weaker, although there are a few exceptions.
I work for a wireless company that will remain nameless for the sake of this discussion...;)

hmm.. interesting.. i have a friend who works for Bell Canada and was recently offered a position that would entail him to work from home, however his internet was for some reason very weak with Bell's service so they had offered to use Roger's to boost his bandwidth so his VPN would run smoothly. so they had to use Roger's for Bell work. .. and im not affiliated with anyone.. in my eyes the whole telecommunications industry in Canada are a bunch of greedy a**holes.
Call customer servce and tell them you fell like your paying to much...i know i did this last year and the lady was on the phone for over an hour with me trying to get me the lowest price they could do..and she did

There will always be 'dead zones' mo matter the carrier. Buildings, geography and tower placement and other variables all play into coverage.
I'm surprised with the Bell-Rogers comment above...
don't be WIND uses bell for ISP and they have rocket stick

On a related note, if people don't know this already - for their cellular network, WIND uses the 1700 MHz 3G band instead of the more common 1900/2100 MHz frequencies, so in most cases you can't change carriers to them without buying a new handset (and 1700-compatible handset selection is limited, regrettably).
I had been thinking of ditching Telus in favour of WIND, but the Droid 3 isn't compatible with their network. :sad

You can easily get a Quad-band phone at a place like Pacific Mall in Markham.
While they may be a little more expensive, but if you travel a lot or switch to other carriers, it's not locked.

There is a MASSIVE rogers wireless thread on rfd for existing customers. Some of the discounts and credits people have on their plans are outright ridiculous. Go through it and see if it helps you negotiate a better plan.

If it helps, can you hook me up a we a free in-dash gps lol :P?
I personally recommend going with a smaller company like Wind, Chatr or Public mobile, cause based on personal experience I can tell you their reception is garbage, that's why the offer such cheap rates. Just like others have mentioned, I would recommend you to call Rogers and try to negotiate with them, and my advice is dont give up after calling one time. It all honestly depends on who you get. Call multiple times until you get what you want, in the mean time you can shop around and see what others are willing to offer you.
NOT GOING WITH A SMALLER COMPANY!*** sorry that was a typo.

I work at a Fido store ;) It's in the Beaches area. Come by and I'll hook up a TM3 brother. Honestly, not to be biased or anything but Fido has some cheap ass rates for unlimited talking (and I'm not even a Fido customer, haha)

My new Rogers plan is pretty decent...
1GB of data, Unlimited Social Networking, Unlimited Text Messaging, Rogers My10 (Unlimited Canada-Wide voice/mms to any 10 numbers), Call display and Voicemail for $65/month. Made a request to remove the voicemail to save me $5/month, which bumps me down to $60.
