View Full Version : PT: What do you do for extra cash?
SilentJay

I was thinking about picking up a PT job on the weekend and/or evenings to make some extra cash to put towards the house, but was debating between the benefit/harm of working another job versus making what could possibly be $11/hr :P My side business is really slow these days, so I don't think I can count on it as reliable income.
One of the more obvious choices would be something like Future Shop (where I worked for 5 years), where I can snag appliances for my new place at staff price :chuckle
What do you guys do?
I detail cars/trucks out of my garage at home... I do correction, wax, interior, exterior, etc.
I do it cash... So all the money I make goes right in my pocket.

Do it. I have been thinking about doing the same thing.
It all depends on your actual availability to work another job and how much it will drain your body over time working both jobs.

A buddy and I DJ on the weekends, very profitable especially during the summer months. The money I make from DJ is usually my spending money where the money I make from work its strictly saved. If you have free time and can find a job that is convenient to you and your needs I say go for it. There's nothing you can lose from having some extra money in your pocket.

become a stripper they make good coin. LOL. I know that was no help but it couldnt be helped. As for a part time job if you still have an in with future shop and you are willing to put in the extra time working rather then with family for a little while to help out with bills do it. It will make a huge difference but keep in mind you might get screwed come tax time if your part time job bumps you into another tax bracket. Just my thought. I did the same thing when I bought my first house. I went back to working part time at shoppers drug mart were I still had an in. although it did seem weird since I was the old stock boy there. LOL.

^^^ I work essentially 7-3 daily, though i'm usually up at 4:45AM to hit the gym, so in theory i'd be up from 4:45AM to 9PM daily. I think I could probably pull that off 3 days a week or so? The next step is to get a hookup into a FS job out here. Anyone? :chuckle

Just a word of warning.
My friend has a full time job, and as a part time job he teaches high level swimming levels @ around $24/hr. The problem is, after taxes, he is actually making about $8 an hour.
If you want extra cash, make it an only cash job.

I've been debating picking up a PT job as well lately. I have overtime available almost daily at my job, but by the time the end of the day rolls around, I'm fed up and rarely take advantage. My dad has a friend who owns a small body shop nearby my house, and has been asking if he knows anyone looking for a little occasional/PT work. Thinking that might be fun

Really wanna get my credit card paid off quicker... ugh but I hate dealing with people. What job is there out there that you don't have to deal with annoying customers!! Car detailing is out due to no garage. Boo. Ideally I'd do something with animals on weekends. Might be hard to find though.

Any kind of music genre, mainly depending on what the customer wants will play. Just private events (communions, sweet 16, weddings, etc).

Cash jobs are awesome, but difficult to come by when you're looking for consistency unfortunately... That said, how much you take home and keep is dependant on your FT job and it's proximity to the next tax bracket on a per-paycheque basis.

I've been doing some consulting work for a composites manufacturing company I met through my regular employer. The pay is pretty good and they really appreciate what I do. Its about an hr from home, but its a straight shot up north and actually a scenic, trafficless drive.
Other than that I do the odd bit of commercial photography - weddings, promotions, magazine work, but I try and keep that to a minimum and only accept jobs that are offered to me - never actually go out and look for em. I like photography too much to ruin it by turning it into work, plus theres no money in photography these days.
Used to teach snowboarding on the weekends as a student, but these days Im too tired to wake up at 5:30am on saturdays and the pay isnt good enough. Although I do miss the free ride to hill and lift ticket. riding these days is ****ing EXPENSIVE! I dont mind paying $70 for a lift ticket, if I'm riding at Whistler. Charging that for Blue Hill is criminal :p

I sometimes teach dance on the side - to couples, classes, weekly workshop kids, etc, and while it's not a huge money maker, I love doing it (Been dancing since I was 6 yrs old. :P)
I hope whatever you end up doing is something you actually enjoy, especially if it's going to be a side PT job. :)

+1
At the time, my full time job had me working M-F from 8:30am-5:30pm. So my evening and weekends were somewhat "free".
When my daughter was born, I took up a part time job at Fido in Sherway Gardens for some extra cash. After taxes, it didn't really make sense anymore to do it as it just wasn't worth what "extra income" it was allowing me, compared to the gas to drive there and extra stress and time away from family.
Jason, if you are going to pick up a PT job... cash jobs is what I would recommend. Doing security work at bars, lounges, clubs, etc. on the weekend is a good option. I did this gig a couple of times for a friend of mine who owns a security company. Depending on what you're doing secuirty for, it could be boring.... but it was a cash job.

A few years back, I did tutoring.. Different subjects like math, science, english a bit of history as well, but mostly math and science. For $15/hour maybe 2 hours a day, five days a week (sometimes during the weekends too if the student wanted), you can easily rack up a bit of extra cash. I don't do it anymore because I got lazy, but it definitely is a good part time job. :)

However, fact is that Amway has produced more Millionaires worldwide than any other company..
Multilevel Marketing does work.. but for it to work, you need to be very willing to work as well. It is not easy money like it is often displayed.

Soap? Isn't that AVON?
I suggest using your computer-fixing skills to work. I can see that being the easiest for you to jump into.
Start with asking friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc if there is anything they need installed (seeing as most anti-viruses will be expiring soon) and do it for half of what it would cost Geek Squad to do.
Same thing with re-formatting, networking, and custom computers.
IMHO - don't charge family for any work. It's the fastest way to ruin your relationships if anything goes wrong (even if it's a completely isolated incident). When people pay for anything (despite who they pay) they have "customer" mentality.
also, with the Holiday season fast approaching, You can also start asking banquet halls and catering companies if they need some PT help. Often, they will pay cash and work is on Friday nights and weekends.

Jason, go with the tech support with Future Shop or Best Buy. At least that way you can use your tech savy skills, and still take advantage of discounts.
If you want furnishings discounts, Ikea might be a good fit.

Back in the early 90's, Amway Canada lost alot of money when their lawyers were caught stealing from the company. There was a small time when Amway Canada almost went belly up. As you'll notice I keep saying Amway "Canada", as the US was not really affected. But Amway in general has come a long way from people stocking products in their basement to resell.
In reference to the losing homes issue..... I know this all too well as my Uncle was VP of Sales for the Ontario Region back in the 90's. They went from living the dream in a big house and having nice cars, to moving to a small house and picking up a job doing custodial work. Again, this was back in the 90's. Amway has come a long way........
Good source of extra income, but I wouldn't call it steady income.... unless you commit to it.

I teach tennis in the summer. I teach private, semi-private and group lessons from 5 to 65 years old. I like helping people improve their game and meeting nice people. I tutored a bit in the summer but I enjoy teaching tennis in the outdoors much more. Plus students tend to smile more when learning a sport.

first things first i was kidding about Amway, ACN.. truth is the only reason that these MLM companies are still legit is because they offer a "product" or "service" , truth is that will not bring you ANY sizeable income, the whole point is recruitment...
The “Recruiting Process” is long, hard and strange. Sure a few people sign up on the spot, but the vast majority are fall under the “Some Wait” category. Once you are in, often times you become so wrapped up in things that you find it hard to imagine why anyone wouldn’t sign up – but think about it: If the opportunity were as good as you have convinced yourself it is, then most of your friends would sign up on the spot. This big disconnect between what you think of the opportunity and what the majority of the people you show it to think of it should make you nervous.
Position Marketing- If the statistics showed that most people make a lot of money in ACN, then the above point should not make you nervous – if it really was a good opportunity, then it wouldn’t matter if people took a little convincing before they saw the light. But the limited facts seem to suggest that almost nobody makes money in ACN. The average (mean) income of an ACN representative less than $2 a month (see references so you see im not talking out of my ass ).
The odds are HEAVILY in favor of you having to admit to all your friends that you were wrong in trying to convince them to join ACN.
ACN has an entire website (ACN Integrity) devoted to proving that they are not a fraudulent company, The fact that this website even exists means the vast majority of people will probably assume that ACN is a scam. As I’m sure you’ve all realized already, most people do assume it is a scam (at first glance.) This means that nearly everyone you attempt to recruit and almost every customer you seek to acquire is going to (at least initially) think that you are involved in an illegitimate business.
This is not something i would want to be associated with – not when the odds of you losing money are 100 times greater than the odds of you paying off your initial investment. Sure, maybe you can deal with people thinking you’re part of a scam, because deep down you ‘know’ you are going to get rich and ‘show them’. That seems to be what everyone thinks.. and yet so many are proven wrong.
Obviously ACN as i said before is not illegal, or they would not exist! The strange part comes when they fall back on this proof of legality as an argument for why it is a good business. Why should the fact that it’s legal mean that it’s a good way for you to make money? Occasionally they seem to use the fact that it’s “almost illegal” as a way to convince you that there must be money in the business. They use quotes like “Direct TV is in on the Scam, Bell Canada is in on the Scam, in fact, you’re the only one who isn’t in on the Scam!” Does the fact that ACN might seem like a scam make it more likely you will get rich?
and they will try the tax argument. No doubt youll be told that once you sign up for ACN everything will become a tax “write-off”. If all you’re in it for is the tax breaks, why don’t you register a business of your own for a tenth of the cost? Just because you’ll get a few tax deductions doesn’t mean you should spend $500. Legally you can only deduct expenses that were incurred as a result of the business. Therefore, the only way you are going to save money is by spending a lot more. The fact that tax deductions become available once you join ACN will only save you money if you plan to file a false tax return and deduct expenses that you already had prior to joining – not a good idea!
Look at what you give up! Can anyone name an industry that requires you to be consciouly avoided by so many people and still has such a low success rate? Success shouldn’t (and usually doesn’t) require you to hurt your personal relationships.

I thought I would help set the record straight.
ACN is a major player in the world of deregulated telecom in 19 countries with more to follow. They started as a basic discount long distance carrier but now they offer local, VoIP, internet, mobile, Energy, & soon to arrive Banking. Direct network marketing has taken off huge around the world in the past 2-3 years because people want value from the services and products they buy. When a company like ACN uses word of mouth advertising rather then dropping 100's of millions of dollars of your money to run TV and print ads ACN gives that money to the people that help promote their products.
I laugh when people say to me you got scammed by giving ACN $500 to sell their services, the reason why you may ask is simple! I only joined ACN recently and within 1 month I had made my $500 back and in the process I saved a few friends and family members at least 30% on their phone bills that they were already paying to Bell, Rogers or Telus! $500 to start my own business is a steal! I network with good people and every time my customers and theirs, pay a phone or internet bill I get a percentage.Wouldn't you like to have a little extra in your pocket? Either by switching services or become an Independent Rep. for ACN like me???
Getting involved with a team of positive people that want to see you succeed in a company that's debt free and has Donald Trump (love him or hate him..he knows good business) as a spokesperson, can't be all that bad! People that are broke usually give broke advice and my days of listening to them are long over. No one gets rich overnight without taking action but some of us get rich a hell of a lot easier then the rest!
If you have any comments or would like to know more about how to get involved with ACN just PM me.

My team host a webinar for 30 mins around 9:30 pm a few times a week.
Feel free to look at my online store : gmatthews.acndirect.com
The point is this: while MLM is not a scam per se, it is dishonest. These seminars, speakers, etc. all make it look exactly like what it is: a scummy business tactic. The thing about ACN is it convinces those who are unable to think for themselves that they can make millions an hour just by signing up and helping out their friends! What does this actually mean? Harass everyone you know, see, or have contact information for and pray to god they all sign up and even if they do, you're still making less than minimum wage. Now you pray that they are just as enthusiastic as you and get everyone they know to sign up too. See the thing they don't tell you is: the time and effort it takes to actually make minimum wage and recover your initial investment is insane. If they laid out the facts and did the calculations, no person in their right mind should accept this offer. I did it for a friend actually, and while this was 4 years ago, he quit on the spot. The point is, any livable income level is not sustainable with MLM if you're not in the top 1% of the company (i.e. execs).
Also, "I own my own business" is just another line you were fed by the person who recruited you. That phrase actually means nothing at all.

I don't know if this has been suggested already, as I'm too lazy to read all posts, but a good PT could be pizza delivery. You can do that for pizza pizza, pizza nova etc. they make clean cash, usually it's about $8/hr. but with tips it's always averaging around $14-20/hr. I had a few rare days when I came close to $25/hr after including tips.
Plus, you get to eat there for free :-)

for students (like me) you could become a research assistant if your profs like you/you have good grades. Its really good pay, includes benefits (often) and looks amazing on a resume. There are way more positions available for these things than you think but you either have to ask your prof or have it offered to you. Plus, you could keep this going for years. Its not boring library research but can be fun like interviewing research subjects, etc. Reccomend trying it.

I have two very close friends that have been able to bring in over 5000.00 per mth on services that we use each & everyday. ACN is Service driven & not a product driven company, I've enjoyed being a customer I've decided to join & will little extra work a few nights a week I should also be able to bring in a few extra $$$
I also already own my own business.

I have a great full time job with the University, however I am about to write my OMVIC test so that I can start working for Westowne on weekends selling cars. The dealership has already confirmed my position if I pass the test. We talked about 4-5 hour days on Saturday and Sundays.

Me toooo...
Really wanna get my credit card paid off quicker... ugh but I hate dealing with people. What job is there out there that you don't have to deal with annoying customers!! Car detailing is out due to no garage. Boo. Ideally I'd do something with animals on weekends. Might be hard to find though.
hahha, I finally got off my lazy ass and got myself a weekend job since this last post. Just started this weekend, and I love it.
On top of being able to put more cash aside to save for a house, working at an auto wreckers definitely has its perks!!! Power windows here I come :)

bar-back at a nightclub and you get
a) wage + tips generated by hot bartenders :D
b) work around hot bartenders :D
c) become friends with club security/ owners and get discounts
I used to be the audio tech at Boa after it moved to the Sound Emporium location and was amazed how well the bar-backs did. It's decent enough work and if you like the music it's a plus too.
Hell I wish I could still do the audio work but it's taxing with such odd hours... 9pm to 4am and such.
